Part of what I love most about the holiday season is the abundance of food. Mom’s famous cornbread…Aunt Tina’s yummy mac and cheese. And let’s not forget about my brother’s mouth-watering Sweet Potato Pie. During the holiday season, the weather is cold and frightful and all I want to do is eat all of the comfort food and spend time with loved ones.
But, did you know — millions of American children struggle with hunger on a daily basis. I was shocked to learn that: nearly 16 million children in America, the combined population of Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago, go hungry each and every day. As a new mom and as a HUMAN BEING, this statistic breaks my heart. Unilever Project Sunlight is rallying people across the country to “Share A Meal†to help fight hunger in children in America. And I got involved.
Along with Beauty Blogger Danielle Gray, I recently hosted “Beauty Does Good Food Drive & Swap“. We glam’d up and hung out at Wonderland Beauty Parlor (418 W 13th St. NYC) and traded non-perishable food items for Unilever beauty essentials from brands like Caress, Suave and more. It was a blast!
I’ll be the first to admit, that when I think of the many many things WRONG in the world today, I find it a bit overwhelming. And the thought of little tiny kids, just like my little Phoebe, going hungry everyday…well, it’s downright depressing. And the reality is that I cannot feed every child. But. BUT. What I can do, and what we ALL can do, is act locally and take on some small, initiative and make a difference. I hosted a food drive/ beauty exchange because I love beauty. What will you do to help make a difference?
This documentary short created by Unilever is helping to spread awareness about the face of child hunger in America.
Please join the effort by partaking in an activity to help end hunger in your own community. Learn more about how to get involved by going to www.projectsunlight.us – Unilever Project Sunlight.
