New York Fashion Week – Hair, Makeup, Nails for PRISM Spring/Summer 2014

Designer: Anna Laub

Hair: O&M Creative Director Janelle Chaplin

Inspiration: An androgynous, modern Japanese influence to compliment  the PRISM Spring/Summer 2014 swimsuit collection that was itself inspired by a futuristic but delicate idea of Japan. The hair was to look high gloss and “wet,” reminiscent of Helmut Newton photography. Chaplin didn’t want the hair to look stringy and piece-y, so she molded large pieces and sections with O&M products.

Get the Look:

  1. Prep damp hair with O&M Rootalicious Root Lift Spray throughout roots to ends.
  2. Blow dry hair with a round brush, gently pulling hair straight down as you go, smoothing out the hair and removing flyaways.
  3. Combine a generous amount of O&M Style Guru Styling Cream and O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum in the palms of the hands to combine.
  4. Rake products through hair from roots to end, applying enough mixture until you create a “wet” look.
  5. Finish ends with O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum.

TTBTip: Achieve it at home by combining a styling cream with a shine serum. The cream gives it the hold, the serum gives it shine and that wet feeling.

Fall 2013 Hair Trend Alert:  Straight, clean, chic, tight hair is in season. Hair is really going away, everything is being sleeked and gelled back. Think severe and aggressive.

Inspiration: Because it is a chic swimwear collection, the inspiration was a  Helmut Lang, strong woman look.

Get the Look:

  1. Start with a tough, strong eyebrow. Brows are so important because they frame your face, so the brows here are stronger, almost boyish and masculine. They aren’t really arched, more bushy and tougher. It’s an “angry brow” but at the same time, really beautiful.
  2. There is a Geisha moment on the lip, almost a petal effect. The lips are concealed, with a bright coral in center of mouth which is blended and faded out. Press with fingers to achieve.
  3. For eyes, it’s all matte sculpting and highlighting powders.
  4. After highlighting your face with concealer, brush MAC Studio Fix  all over, then the whole thing magically blends. The look is very skin-centered. Don’t use blush, this provides the androgynous, masculine effect.

Nails: Essie

Inspiration: The inspiration came from the name of the line, Prism. So they started by polishing little prisms at the base of the nail. Since the collection is showing a lot of skin, the nails also reflect that by “showing a little nail.” In terms of color, since the swimwear collection has a lot of khaki greens and lilacs, the metallic nail color, ‘For the Twill of It‘ brings them together.

The Scoop:  The base coat is two coats of Essie’s Ridge Filler. You might consider ridge filler to be BB cream of nail polishes; it perfects everything. It provides a beautiful sheer finish and flatters every nail plate. If you’re going to bare some nail, you might as well do it flawlessly!

Pro Tip:  Metallics have staying power! They are like jewelry, especially when polished on only on a portion of the nail. Embellish yourself!
