In the Morning – A Film by Nefertite Nguvu

Hi, everyone! Let me just be upfront — the post is dedicated to plugging the incredible work of a dear friend and her very special project.

As part of the UrbanWorld Film Festival, my dear friend and filmmaker Nefertite Nguvu is showing her very first feature film, In The Morning — and I’d love for you to attend the screening.

What’s special and unique about In The Morning is its point of view and portrayal of black life in a new light. It’s a smart relationship story about sophisticated 30-somethings along the lines of ‘Manhattan’ era Woody Allen films but with black folks. The dialogue, the aesthetics of the costume design, the cinematography, the EVERYTHING — it’s really something to get excited about.

TRAILER

SYNOPSIS:

“In The Morning is a feature film about love and its inevitable change/ decline. It charts the emotional anatomy of the lives, loves, infidelities, and enduring friendships of a group of inter-connected New Yorkers over the course of one day.”  The film is an atmospheric mood piece that weaves together 3 stories of personal growth and the power of choice and action, examining the complexities of love from the perspectives of 3 women, in the midst of some hard-won self-transformation.

Further…

Friends, Harper, Ravi, Fez, Bly and Amara, gather to bid farewell to one of their own moving abroad, and debate the compromise and loss of their youthful ideals about marriage, fidelity, life and love; 2 lovers, Malik and Cadence, meet to ceremoniously end a whirlwind romance that has collapsed under the weight of fears, obligations and regrets; A couple, Zuri and Leal, sift through the remains of their broken relationship as they try to make a life altering decision, journeying through the bitter heartbreak that comes with faded love, disintegrated trust, and dreams abandoned. For everyone, life will be indelibly altered in the morning.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:

For me, making In The Morning has been driven by my desire for the portrayal of African American lives with a broader range of complexity, divergent expressivity, and humanity. I wanted to create a film that spoke to the existential truth of our lives, by exploring intimacy, i.e. exploring how we form, and eventually reveal ourselves in our deepest relationships. My goal was to produce a film that was not only entertaining, but also announces the emergence of the kind of cinema I think we all, deep down, long for: a cinema that richly reflects the breath, depth and multitudes of who we are.

CAST INFO:

Jacky Ido (Star of current NBC series ‘Taxi Brooklyn’) Emayatzy Corinealdi (Star of Sundance award winner ‘Middle of Nowhere’), Numa Perrier (Star of popular web series ‘The Couple’ currently under television development by HBO), Kim Hill (soul singer, original lead singer of The Black Eyed Peas), De’adre Aziza (Tony Nominated broadway actor).
