GIVEAWAY & PREVIEW: Carol’s Daughter Transitioning Kit 1-2-3

If you have been paying attention to the beauty buzz, you no doubt have realized that there is a big transitioning movement afoot. More and more women of color are opting to ditch the creamy crack, (relaxers) and are instead choosing to wear their hair natural. According to Carol’s Daughter’s research, the relaxer market has dropped from approximately $100 million to $35 million — that statistic speaks volumes, yes?

In recognizing this trend, Carol’s Daughter has developed a transitioning kit that is “the first haircare treatment kit to uniquely address the most concerning problems women face when transitioning from relaxed to natural hair: product build up, scarred scalp and breakage at the demarcation point.” The kit contains three products, each formulated to address the three major concerns of women who are transitioning from relaxed to natural hair.

Product buildup is addressed with a Purifying Extra-Gentle Cleanser. This low sulfate or low poo formula cleanses the hair but doesn’t strip the hair of its natural moisture. Moisture loss is a major concern for women with naturally curly and frizzy hair.

Repeatedly applying chemical relaxers to hair (and sometimes scalp) scars the scalp and hair follicles, causing hair to grow weaker and more brittle. The Renewal Scalp Spray is formulated to gently exfoliate the scalp and promote faster cellular turnover to produce more healthy new growth.

For many women who are transitioning, myself included, the most frustrating part of the process is dealing with the dual textures of the hair. That is, the point where the natural hair meets the relaxed hair. This point, referred to as the demarcation point, is generally weaker and more prone to breakage. The Restoring Anti Breakage Treatment is designed to intensely strengthen both textures of the hair so the hair won’t snap during detangling and styling.

I am currently in the second attempt to go natural. My first attempt was brought to an abrupt end simply because I was frustrated and I was spending way too much time doing my hair. Carol’s Daughter understands this and the many other frustrations that women face as they transition, and recently launched www.trasitioningmovement.com to provide help and support to women who want to transition from relaxed to natural hair.

If you are thinking of ditching the relaxer and going au naturale, Carol’s Daughter Transitioning Kit is definitely worth considering and when you need a bit of support, inspiration or just to let out you frustration, head over to www.transitioningmovement.com. Prior to penning this post I made the big chop, so, I am no longer battling the dual textures. Had this product been around six months ago, it may have saved me some frustration. The Transitioning kit will be available June 2012 and will be available at Carol’s Daughter stores and online, Sephora, Macy’s Dillards, Ricky’s, HSN and Regis Salons nationwide. The Kit will retail for $40.

At TTB, we get how difficult it can be to transition, so, we’re giving you an opportunity to win a Carol’s Daughter Transitioning 1-2-3 Kit to make your journey a bit easier. Good luck!

Le sigh, where to begin. Essentially transitioning for me is difficult as I’ve never known where to begin/what to do in times of breakage, etc. The more I’ve desired and become committed to a healthy beauty regime, the more I’ve researched and finally decided to push forward with never relaxing my hair again. The craziest thing is, even relaxed you can still tell I have curly hair. Hopefully my on/off transition that started 2 years ago can get a fresh start with this kit!

I’ve been transitioning for 14 months but had a little bit of setback when I got my relaxed ends cut off by a terrible stylist a week ago. Now I’m just trying to figure out how to define my curls and how to style me new hair length.

Rebecca, thanks for your comment. What products are you using now?

  • Rebecca G says:

I am bi-racial (black/white) and I have gone back and forth with relaxers for the last 5 years. I stopped relaxing 2 summers ago but about 1 year ago I got my hair murdered by a new stylist. I asked for a trim & she went crazy so I had to relax it to let it stay in place. About 6 months ago I cut off 9 inches & stopped relaxing my hair. It is now almost shoulder lengh but breaking around the edges. I want to leave it natural but am having a hard time with the breaking.

Thanks for your comment, Ashli. We hope you stick with it :-). Natural hair offers a lot of flexibility but it can be a challenge. Check out our post on L’Oreal EverCreme, http://bit.ly/TTBEverCreme. EverCreme is now a staple in my routine. Also love Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Moisturizer (the new lighter version.) I’m still looking for the perfect styling products for when I want to wear it out and a little curly.

  • I’ve been transitioning for about 6 months and it has been a hard but rewarding journey. i have definitely had perm daydreaming moments, especially when I have to detangle the situation on top of my head. My go to style is a twist out…because I can’t do anything else at this moment. My hair sheds and breaks alot and it is somewhat hard to take but I try different products with the hope that my hair will be healthy.

Thanks for sharing, DeidreJW and Lorita. On my first attempt I wasn’t trying to be “natural” I just wanted a change, so, I wasn’t committed. This time around I’m all about chemical free hair, so, I’m positive I can make it work 🙂

  • This is my second attempt, as well. The longest that I had gone without having a relaxer was 13 months, but summer was upon me and I couldn’t handle the frizziness and how uncontrollable my roots were. I go through “too much” mentally when it is time to get a relaxer, so that is one of a few reasons as to why I am committed to transitioning this time around.

Well I am about one year post relaxer and have been actively transitioning since december 2011. I began this journey when a couple of youtubers caught my attention. It wasn’t a big decision and so far it’s been a chance for me to truly connect to my hair and also my family since most of the women in my family are natural. I have been trying to master many of the twistout and braidout styles but have been having the most success with bantu knot outs. I havent tried many products since I have a monthly hair budget but so far those things have been working okay for me. I am interested in the transitioning kit mostly because it is specifically for transitioners. I want to try new things with hopes they will have the best outcome with my hair. Well thats about it! and Im excited to continue with my journey!
