A wash-and-go for my natural hair is virtually impossible – unless I want to walk out of the house in what my girlfriend calls my Afro Helmet. That was until I started using Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly.
My Hair Prior to using Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly
Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly defines and holds curls without being crunchy and eliminates or decreases frizz. The first time I used this product I almost threw it in the trash because it did nothing for my hair. It also did nothing the second, third or forth time. The problem was not the product but my application technique.
After cleansing, conditioning and detangling my hair, I add a leave -in-conditioner and start working the Curl Boosting Jelly into my hair in small sections from roots to ends. I generally run my fingers through each small section until my hair feels smooth and I can tell that each tiny section has been coated with product — usually a few seconds on each part. I do this over my whole head until my entire head is complete.
IMPORTANT: I don’t touch the curls again until my hair is at least 80% dry.
My Hair After Using Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly
Bottom line: Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly can take me from my Afro Helmet to super defined curls that can last up to a week. After about 4 days the jelly starts coming together and forming tiny little balls or flakes. However, if I spritz with water, add a tiny bit of jelly and use the same process I used above, the product again gets dispersed through the hair giving a great refresher to the curls.
Downside: The Curl Boosting Jelly breaks down nail polish. While I like the ability to wash and go with confidence, I also want to rock my manicures for more than 15 minutes and keep my nails strong and healthy. Besides, if there is a solvent in this product breaking down nail polish, what is it doing to my hair and scalp? Ugh!
There are some days when I don’t have the time to do anything but wash my hair and go, but because of the downside to using this product I am reserving it for only those occasions. With my hair at the length seen above I get about 5 uses from the 16 ounce jar. The 16 ounce Curl Boosting Jelly retails for $15 and you can find it here.

I haven’t tried the Curls Unleashed Boosting Jelly, but I have tried the Take Command Cream & here are my thoughts so far!

Hi Christine, this product actually works wonders for my hair!! I am a 4c in the back, & a 4b in the front. But, i really hate the little white balls i have in the morn. So, i found myself having to co-wash daily to remove them. This has happened to me with every prduct I have used for type 4 hair. I never even thought to just add more product or water. What do you do if you dont want a ‘wet’ look?
Hi Tasha! Thanks for stopping by. I don’t get white balls or flakes its more a bluish color, same as the product color but it doesn’t happen until day 3 or 4. Do you use other products with the jelly? If you do the ‘cocktailing’ might be the reason for the balls or flakes. I don’t have a wet look after my hair dries, it just looks shiny. For the last couple of months I have been doing twistouts using some variation of the DIY products in this post: https://thisthatbeauty.com/2013/01/the-best-twistout-ive-ever-had/. My hair is a bit longer now so I also blow dry it and do cornrows, etc. Let me know if this info helps. Good luck! 🙂
I’m currently using this now. I just gotta keep working with it butv I believe we are the same hair type. What is your hair type?
Hi Ashley, I’m a 4c in areas and a 4b in other areas. If we are the same hair type it will only work if you really work it in and not touch until it is almost dry. PLEASE let me know how it goes; I’m yet to meet someone with my hair type that says it works for them as well. Thanks 🙂
Good review! Do you follow the Curly Girl (CG) method? From what I can tell this product is not CG-friendly due to the cones in it and I agree with you that if it can remove your manicure, it is a no-go for my hair and scalp. Thanks for saving me a trip to Sally’s to get this!
Thanks, Danielle! No, I don’t follow the curly girl method. I don’t want to sound too zen but I just listen to my hair and scalp. If my hair likes the product and it doesn’t irritate my scalp, i’m all over it! I have no problem with silicones because I have no noticeable reaction to them. Honestly, without some kind of silicone my hair is alsmost impossible to detangle. What do you use?
I love this product. I’ve been using it for about a year. I get the best results when apply while my hair is very wet, so I apply it when I’m in the shower. After I apply I just shake my hair and the coils form.
Ren, I wish I had that kind of hair. If I applied this and just shook, all I would end up with is a headache. 🙂
