The heat is upon us all and for some, makeup application has come to a halt. Horrifying, I know. It is just too hot to worry about layering eye shadows, highlighting the cheekbone, or contouring the face.  For me – all summer makeup roads lead to the bright lip.  Polished, professional, versatile and all around awesome.  Fear not my fair skinned beauties, I am proof positive that  this look is not only reserved for those who bronze in the summer (and let’s not give them the stink-eye)– a punch of color on the lips is for everyone.  The ease of this look is why I keep it as a summer staple – knowing that only the lips need to be the star and the rest of the face can take a breather – literally – it’s scorching out!

My go to the past few weeks has been Youngblood’s Tangelo – a bright but sheer tangerine perfect for work and weekends.  And when wearing such a bright lip – keep the rest of the face simple – a light base or tinted moisturizer with SPF, defined brows, full lashes (a must for this look), a nude eyeshadow (optional) and a subtle hint of color on the cheeks (either cream or powder).  Here is a swatch of  the Youngblood lipstick I have been fancying and the final look:

Are you brave enough to rock a bright lip?

What are your favorite bold lip colors that you wear in the summer?

This post is inspired by the barometer. In case you haven’t noticed — Spring has sprung and Summer’s just ’round the corner. Hopefully you’ve been reading ThisThatBeauty all Fall/ Winter and have been putting in work with respect to your skin care routine. For if you have, you will embrace my upcoming recommendation. But if you have been bad little ThisThatBeauty bellas and have not taken my sage skin care advice all Fall/ Winter, well….you’re gonna go into a state of panic over this next sentence.

It is time to ditch your beloved moderate to full coverage foundation & lighten up with a tinted moisturizer.

Unless you want your face to melt clear off of your face, I beg you to set aside the full coverage foundation for the next few months…

Summer is the time of year to show a little skin…skin on your arms, legs, midriff (preferably, at the beach – please), and face. When I think of tinted moisturizers I generally think of them as a go-to products for individuals with near perfect skin. If you’re anything like me (and most women), your skin is not perfect…and that’s ok. While its never too late to start a proper skin care regimen to address your skin care issues, at this point I encourage you to embrace the skin you’re in and tone down your makeup with a tinted moisturizer.

For those of you with slight uneven skin-tone and minor discoloration, — a tinted moisturizer will bump up your complexion and give the appearance of bare beautiful skin. For those of you dealing with more severe skin conditions like acne and hyperpigmentation — I still recommend a tinted moisturizer. While it will not give the appearance of perfect skin, like with a heavier foundation, it will clean up the canvas, calm the skin, and cancel out redness and blotchiness. Your skin will feel light and refreshed without a heavy coating of foundation competing with 80 degree days. As someone who’s been there with troubled skin, believe me when I tell you that at some point you have to (as the old folks say) “let go and let God”. It is simply too hot and too humid to mess around with heavy foundation during the summer. Continue to focus on your morning/evening skin care routine and your skin’s condition will improve over time. But in the meantime, especially for the warm summer months, strip down your foundation just a bit and give a tinted moisturizer a try.

Do you have a favorite tinted moisturizer in your current makeup arsenal? Well you know I wouldn’t put you through this whole soap box soliloquy on tinted moisturizer without offering up a few of my favs. Yep, ThisThatBeauty’s got your back:

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++ I mean. .  . dang, NARS! Why didn’t you just call it “best-skin-of-your-life-in-a-tube”?…because that’s exactly what this lightweight skin perfector delivers! Available in nine exquisite shades ranging from Finland (Lightest with a neutral balance of pink and yellow undertones) to Polynesia (Dark with warm chocolate undertones), not only does Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer perfect the complexion with just a few drops, it also delivers skin-enhancing antioxidants and powerful full spectrum sun protection. And while I advise the use of a separate SPF underneath your makeup, Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer packs a really nice bonus SPF of 30 PA+++. After application my skin appears more smooth & subtlety illuminated. This has become my summer staple!

BECCA Luminous Skin Colour Sheer Colour Makeup SPF20 is another ThisThatBeauty fav. You all know that I love my BECCA Compact Concealer to pieces, but come Memorial Day I switch over to a lightweight formula. In addition to offering sun protection, this multitasking tinted moisturizer contains antioxidant vitamins A, B, D, and E to aid tissue repair, increase collagen renewal and hydration, and protect against free radical damage. The soothing soothing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic ingredients in the formula make BECCA Luminous Skin Colour Sheer Colour Makeup SPF 20 a great choice for individuals with sensitive skin.

CoverFx Skin Tint FX Moisturizing Treatment and Tint is an oil-free, paraben-free, and water resistant formula with skin repairing ingredients and anti-aging technology. The shades available range from C Light to M Deep…that’s like a “light olive” to a “warm walnut”. SkinTint FX’s formula is light and silky. The finish is a natural sun-kissed glow. SkinTint FX contains SPF 30 and multi-vitamin antioxidants A and E. It is also supercharged with emollients, such as ceramide 2, vitamin F and emollients derived from Mediterranean olives. This one’s packed with goodness!

La Mer Fluid Tint SPF 18 ($65) is a water based formula that adds a touch of color for a smooth, even finish. Enriched with gemstones, Fluid Tint absorbs light energy, transforming it into beneficial green light to enhance anti-oxidant activity. Photonic spheres redirect and diffuse light. Light-reactive seaweeds bind moisture to the skin, helping to prevent dehydration. La Mer Fluid Tint SPF 18 comes in three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark.

per-fekt skin perfection gel is a skin perfector that instantly enhances the appearance of the skin offering an easy breezy summertime appropriate alternative to traditional foundation, primer, color corrector and powder. This powerhouse gel-mousse instantly enhances skin tone, helps to maintain hydration, and significantly reduces the appearance of redness and discoloration. It also helps to diminish the appearance of enlarged pores, pesky fine lines and embarrassing ill-placed shine. per-fekt comes in five shades: Translucent (colorless for all skin tones), Luminous (very light neutral/fair skin tones), Radiant (medium beige/fair to medium skin tones), Rich (warm tan/tanned skin), Decadent (deep tan/ doubles as a bronzer for lighter skin tones).

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint allows you to hydrate, cover, and protect all in one formula. This lightweight tint leaves skin beautifully hydrated, with sheer even toned coverage while shielding skin from environmental damage. Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint contains Seve Marine, a green algae that replenishes dehydrated skin, leaving it smooth and supple. The formula is packed with free-radical fighting antioxidants of Kiwi Extract and vitamin E, Licorice Root Extract to calm redness and inflammation, and Menthol to provide a cooling effect. The nourishing formula also includes Youngblood’s signature mineral blend of Rhodolite, Zincite, Hematite and Malachite, which help protect skin cells and tissue.

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint comes in four skin-perfecting shades: Natural, a bare shade for Light to Medium skin; Warm, a rich brown for Medium skin tones; Tan, a toasty shade for Medium skin; and Golden Sun, a soft, shimmering golden shade for illuminating Medium to Deep skin tones. Golden Sun is my personal fav for highlighting the skin! Visit Youngblood at Henri Bendel NYC.

POP Beauty No Show Correct & Protect Tint is a weightless SPF 30 tint gel that evens out uneven tone and discoloration. The formula is oil-free, water based, and enriched with Vitamins C and E. POP Beauty No Show Correct & Protect Tint is available in two shades: Neutralize and Balance. The no show formula is ideal for women of fair to medium complexion.

This summer, embrace your skin and try a tinted moisturizer. Stay tuned for the next installment of Summer Makeup 101 :)

During Fashion Week I went backstage to cover beauty for Bright Young Things…you remember my previous coverage of BYT, right? They’re the super cool minimalist line of eco-friendly, multi functional pieces. Click here for previous coverage BYT on TTB.

….but back to Fashion Week. Backstage at the Bright Young Things show I had the opportunity to interview key artist James Vincent (for Youngblood Cosmetics) about his look for the show. Check check check it out!

The first day of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week started with a bang! Normally I cover Fashion Week as press…this includes attending the shows, events, parties, and covering backstage hair/makeup. This year was quite different.

In addition to all of the above responsibilities…I was also Creative Director of Makeup for a New York Fashion Week Show – the Vessel by Lois Samuels

Working in this capacity was a great honor and a dream come true. As Creative Director of Makeup, it was my responsibility to design the runway makeup look, partner with the makeup sponsor to select colors, and lead a talented team of artists. Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics was the makeup sponsor…they are truly an amazing partner!

This is the face chart that I designed for the makeup look.

Lois Samuels asked me to create a look that matched the feel of her collection. I drew inspiration from the color palette and structure of Lois’ clothing line. In designing the makeup look, I introduced the idea of daytime smoky eyes, soft flushed cheeks, and a semi matte lip. To reflect the masculinity and menswear inspiration of Lois’ collection, we decided to go with with strong contoured cheeks and a well groomed brow. The skin was fresh and dewy.

The core products included:

All Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics

  • Natural Mineral Foundation
  • Hi Def Hydrating Mineral Powder
  • Liquid Mineral Foundation
  • Mineral Primer
  • Ultimate Concealer
  • Mineral Rice Setting Powder
  • Mineral Radiance in Sundance
  • Minerals in the Mist
  • Eye shadows – Merlot, Storm, Halo, Moonstone
  • Eyeliner in Blackest Black
  • Mascara in Onyx
  • Brow Artiste
  • Crushed Mineral Blush in Plumberry and Sherbet
  • Liner in Pout
  • Lipstick in Barely Nude and Cuvee
  • Lipshine in Crush
  • Lipgloss in Praline

Here’s the day in pictures:

Lois made it to the pages of WWD. Yay!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a good old-fashioned Face Of The Day post, so I figure I’ll jump back into the saddle with a Celebrity Face of The Day look.

I was recently asked to join the glam squad of WNBA Legend, Kym Hampton. As Kym’s Makeup Artist and Wardrobe Stylist, my job is to prep Kym‘s makeup and wardrobe for public appearances.

In addition to being a phenomenal athlete, Kym has an amazing voice. She recently sang the national anthem for a Liberty vs. Mystics game…and I did her makeup!

Here’s the look I created for Kym (ignore me peeking over Kym’s shoulder :)

Here are the products used —

Skin Prep:

  • Embroylisse Lait Crème Concentre
  • Iman Under Cover Agent Oil Control Primer (Shouts to Kelly Epps/ The MakeupLoft for turning me on to this product)

  • Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in Caramel
  • Cinema Secrets Foundation in 200-02 (same shade as Ms ThisThatBeautyJ)
  • NARS The Multiple in Maui/ Palm Beach (I used both shades)
  • MAC Bronzing Powder in Refined Deeper Bronze
  • Youngblood Mineral Rice Setting Powder in Dark

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin
  • Face Drama eye shadows Sugar Cookie, Moody, and Majestic
  • MAC eye shadows in Nocturnal and Violet Trance

  • Face Drama eye shadow in Exquisite as highlight

Here we are at the end of the night. We’re both a little shiny at this point…but Kym still looks like a certified banger!

So what do you think of Kym’s look?
She loved it…said it felt pretty and polished, yet not overdone:)

I’m off to the tents…chat soon!

My new found love for red lipstick cannot be contained. When it comes to celebrity glamour, a fiercely fiery red lip is nothing new. But for the everyday gal about town, a red lip is a big deal. And I’m not talking about a toned down see-through sheer red tint (while that’s nice at times). I’m talking true, bright, festive red! The kind of red that commands the attention of the entire room (in a good way…not in an, “OMG, who’s that whore for hire” – type of way.

Prior to my encounter with the breathtakingly beautiful Poppy King (creator of Lipstick Queen) I never fancied myself to be the red lipstick type. I gave up on wearing red a long time ago. The wrong red has a strange way of aging you. Also, as a woman with rather full lips (au natural, baby!) I’ve always felt the need to shy away from too much color/attention the lips.

So back to Poppy King…earlier this year I had the privilege of working with Poppy King on the launch her latest collection, Chinatown. While spending time with Poppy, I decided to try HER signature color. Oh what the heck…”when in Rome”, I thought to myself. I have to admit, I was a little self conscious at first. How dare I think I can wear red??? After applying the lipstick I went up to Poppy and asked her thoughts. And in her lovely Australian accent she responded, “Ohhh, its gorgeous on your darling”. SO there! My red lip is Poppy King approved!

Ever since that day I have been absolutely smitten with red.  Not one to leave well enough alone, I set forth a quest to uncover more great reds! I think you will be very pleased with the gorgeous range of reds out there. So without further ado, here’s your ThisThatBeauty approved list of great reds!

I hope you fall in love with one or two:)

Lipstick Queen Red Sinner This is the red that started it all.

And when I tell you I wore this puppy everywhere…I WORE IT EVERYWHERE…

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics is changing your opinion of mineral makeup. While at The LA Makeup Show I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with Youngblood Cosmetics. I was particularly interested in spending time with the brand because I have had very little success with mineral makeup.

A few years back I had tried the “Swirl. Tap. Buff” folks but grew tired of the “Swirl. Tap. Buff” mess all over my bathroom sink. Also, the product did not work well with my skin in non-Summer months. Anyhoo, from there I pretty much moved away from mineral makeup…but secretly I’ve been wanting to uncover a mineral makeup gem and shine light on a brand that hits the nail on the head.

Please allow me to grab my spotlight and direct it towards Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

Pauline Youngblood Soli developed her mineral foundation in a medical setting specifically for patients recovering from harsh medical procedures. Clean and lightweight, Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics allow the skin to breathe, and wont clog pores  or cause irritation.

Youngblood’s milling process, natural shade selection, and flawless finish make Youngblood ideal for Hi Def application.

Youngblood offers a wide array of concealer, blush, eye shadow, lip color, and mineral foundation (both powder and cream formula). The foundation is incredibly natural looking and will accurately match a wide variety of  skin tones. Some mixing and matching may be required. My complexion kit is the Dark kit and my exact match is a sprinkle of toffee and a sprinkle of coffee :)

While at the Youngblood booth I learned lots of cool tips and tricks for using their mineral foundation. The coolest trick I learned was to mix the mineral powder foundation with my fav SPF, and VOILA – tinted moisturizer with SPF. How cool is that? Man, this is such a cool trick..and I’m all over it for summer!

    ThisThatBeauty Picks –

“ThisThatBeauty Picks” are my personal favs…products that I consider collection “standouts”.

Mineral Primer Creates a flawless canvas for mineral makeup application.

Minerals in the Mist You had me at the word “mist”. I am a huge fan of facial sprays. Minerals in Mist hydrate the skin and lock in moisture with three signature vitamin and mineral enriched facial mists. I dare you to choose just one from the three intoxicating scents and formulas:

    • Refresh: Citrus, Tangerine and Grapefruit
    • Restore: Citrus, Grapefruit, Lime and Rosemary
    • Recharge: Spearmint, Peppermint, Ginger and Lime

Ultimate Concealer This beautifully flawless concealer comes in two shades and is enriched with Vitamin C and E to help minimize the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. Ultimate Concealer also contains Allantoin to stimulate the growth of healthy tissues and Jojoba Esters to prevent dryness.

Lunar DustLight-reflecting mineral dusting powder is absolutely gorg when mixed with body lotion and applied to decolletage, arms, and legs.

Promiscuous Lip GlossPretty Spring Color Alert! Yum! The color is described as a “sexy shade of sweet watermelon”.

Crushed Mineral Blush in Cabernet – BROWN GIRL BLUSH ALERT! Try Cabernet, you WILL NOT be disappointed. See my pics below.

In the pics below I am wearing:

    • Mineral Primer
    • Natural Mineral Foundation. Used a combination of Toffee and Coffee from the DARK Foundation Sampler Kit
    • Crushed Mineral Blush in Cabernet
    • Lunar Dust in Dusk
    • Mineral Rice Setting Powder in DARK

    • Halo all over lid up to brow bone and in inner tear duct
    • Gilded on lower lid
    • Sapphire in outer v
    • Czar blended into crease
    • Intense Color Eye Pencil in Blackest Black

    • Brow Artiste in Dark (used brow powder and tinted brow wax)

    • Lip Gloss in Promiscuous
