Working out is a real chore for me and I’m never in the mood to do it. However, my love of food and my disdain for muffin-tops and back fat pretty much guarantee that I will workout frequently. With that said, one might think I am all into gadgets and other contraptions to get results. I am actually the opposite. I like working with free weights and barbells. It feels more natural to me and I can modify and vary my range of motion according to how I feel and not get looked into the limitations or requirements of a machine. I’m not saying I have it right, it is simple what I prefer. The Workout Band from Hourglass Angel is perfect for my style of workout.

How The Workout Band  Works

The band is wrapped and hooked around the midsection from just under the breast to the top of the pelvic bone. It is very securely fastened and basically feels like you are getting a hug from a grandparent you haven’t seen in years, in other words — it’s pretty tight. According to the manufacturer, the band “creates compression in your core, stimulating thermal activity and ramping up perspiration. This process allows toxins and impurities to exit the skin, while mobilizing fat cells. Put simply, the band helps ensure that your workout is working for you.”

The Workout Band

My Results with The Workout Band

More than anything, The Workout Band provides me with support and helps me to keep proper form during exercises such as lunges, squats, dead-lifts and planks. I have a lower back injury which makes proper form imperative for me.  Keeping correct form helps me to reduce my risk of aggravating my injury and I can squeeze in a few more reps into each set.

I noticed an increased amount of sweating around my midsection but I can’t say I lost fat in this area at a faster rate than I did in the past. I started with The Workout Band in medium and fastened it at outer most hooks.  At the end of a month of use I was able to move to the inner hooks but it wasn’t as comfortable — I suspect I have a few more weeks to go before I can comfortably stay in the inner hooks. The band is cut lower in the back, so, it doesn’t restrict movement for back exercises. As expected it does restrict movement for core exercises, so, you might want to remove it before doing situps and crunches.

The Workout Band Construction and Care

The Workout Band is made from latex and has cotton exterior and interior lining. It has FlexiBonig anchors, similar to those found in girdles and other shapewear, that provide control and help to keep the band in place. Two rows of hook and eye closures allows you to find your most comfortable fit and adjust as you slim down. I wash The Workout Band by hand using mild detergent in lukewarm water and let it air dry.

The Workout Band retails for $52.99 and is available at hourglassangel.com in Blue: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL

Have you tried any workout bands? What were your results?

Who doesn’t like a nice, toned tush? Anyone? I thought so. For the final week in our month long challenge, I thought I would share Dr Oz’s “Fat Butt-Busting Workout.” As a test I did all these moves in one go and I have to say…DA-YUM! I was feeling tingling in muscles that I did not know existed.

Read Dr. Oz’s complete four step plan Butt Busting plan here.

As always, we definitely want to hear from you, so, get social with the challenge:

So, guess who is on a roll? I am! And so are you if you’ve taken the first two #TTBFitLife Challenges. If you’ve only done one then you’ll get on a roll with this one :-). If this is your first, welcome!

Big congrats to everyone who attempted to complete or completed all 1400 squats that was our first challenge and shout out to all who attempted or completed the second challenge that was focused on the abs. If you are like me, you probably mixed in a bit of the first challenge with the second just for fun! (but also because I’m on the #NoTShirtOnTheBeach quest)

It’s time for Challenge number three! As was the case with the first two challenges, this is to be done in addition to any workout you are currently doing and it is to be done for 7 consecutive days. If you are not currently on a workout plan, hmmm….what are you waiting for? Please start TODAY!

The first challenge is complete! Congratulations to everyone who attempted to complete or completed all 1400 squats over  7 days (If you didn’t make it on the first challenge, join us now, we would love to have you.)

If you did  squats all 7 days (even if you didn’t do 200 each day,) you should have noticed that by about day 4 or 5 your muscles weren’t as sore and you had a little more endurance than on day one. How did you feel? Did you complete all seven days?

Now it’s time for Challenge Number 2! As was the case with the first challenge, this is to be done in addition to any workout you are currently doing.  If you are not currently on a workout plan, TODAY is a good day to start!

Have you been keeping up with the ThisThatBeauty ladies (@ThisThatBeauty & @ChristeneCarr) via social media?

If you haven’t, then you have been missing out on our #runlife and #letsmove posts and pictures. We are committed to #NoTShirtOnTheBeach status but that doesn’t mean we go about this any ol’ kind of way. We infuse our everyday beauty principles into our outdoor (and indoor) runs & workouts.

The first thing we think about is sun protection. While we want to be fit and healthy, we also want to keep our skin free of dark spots and wrinkles for as long as possible. With that said let’s talk SPF:

How much sunscreen should you use? This much!

SPF for Face

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30 – Great for oily and acne prone skin (Felicia’s current fave). See image for a recommendation on how much moisturizer to use for face and neck.

Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 30 – Perfect for daily use…it does not clog pores and applies seamlessly (Christene’s fav for over a year!)

Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray with SPF 50 (Christene’s fav for body) -Spray in hand and rub on face and neck after Mario Badescu Moisturizer with SPF 30 or Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30.

Aveeno Continuous Protection with SPF 30 Felicia fav for all over body…even back of hands.

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Balm with SPF 15 – This is currently a freebie with purchase of Wet Skin Sunblock Spray. . . not sure how long that deal will last.

Rimmel Moisture Renew Cream Lipgloss with SPF 15 – Christene’s fav for looking cute while swaeting…ha!

[If you think we’re doing too much, keep reading :)] . . . . . .

La Prairie Anti Aging Eye Cream with SPF 15 – In addition to UV protection, this helps prevent moisture loss and repairs damage in the delicate area around the eyes.

C9 by Champion Visor – This serves two purposes, 1) added protection for your face and eyes and 2) catches sweat before it reaches eyes. (Don’t forget that you have to wash your visor occasionally)

Sunglasses with UV protection – Make sure not to wear anything that hugs your cheeks because if you sweat as much as we do, it will end badly.

Felicia in short running shorts applying sunscreen.

For Body

Aveeno Hydrosport Sunblock Spray with SPF 50 – If you want to use this on your face over your moisturizer you should spray it in your hand then apply to face and neck.

Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray with SPF 50 – We really love this because it can be sprayed onto wet skin, rub it in and we’re good to go!

On a recent run it was so hot that we decided it was time for short shorts. Fast forward five minutes and we were both like “hmmm, but our legs aren’t ready for alllll that.” However, our commitment to #runlife dictated that we find a way to be comfortable in our short shorts because if we wanted to keep running, the shorts had to be a part of the deal. Enter the self tanners and bronzers. Yes, brown girls do self tan and bronze and here are our favorite products.

Dr Dennis Grossman’s Alpha Beta Glow Pad with Vitamin D. These bad boys develop in about an hour. “Microencapsulated DHA and soy proteins deliver odorless, streak free color deep into skin to prevent fading through surface exfoliation.” Felicia likes to use them on her legs the night before so she is all set by run time. This product can be used on body and face. Please note that this product does not contain SPF. The golden glow quickly camouflages the appearance of ridges, bumps, and lumps. . . it does for legs what foundation does for your face. Get it? …now “get it!”

Shopping for SPF Products at Target

Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer is formulated especially for medium to tan skin tones and reaches optimal intensity of color after about a week of continuous use (just about the amount of time you need to talk yourself into short, short running shorts.) This is Christene’s pick because it also has SPF. For best results when using self tanners, exfoliate before your first use…we like Kate Somerville Exfoli-Kate.

This might all sound like a lot just to wear short shorts for a run but think about how awesome your legs will look in that sun dress, bathing suit or any other leg baring garment, too? Thank us later!

Moving right along to clothing…

While we’re still a little stuck on buying workout gear exclusively at Marshall’s, we popped into Target and picked up C9 by Champion Running Shorts. They are made of breathable, moisture wicking fabric that is machine washable. The lining also offers a bit of support. On top, if you are like Christene, any sports bra will do with a white cotton tank top or t-shirt. If you need a bit more support (like Felicia) grab a sports bra and throw on a light colored T-shirt or tank top (to reflect the sun and help keep you cool).

Felicia’s favorite workout fragrance

We generally workout outdoors so bug protection is also a concern. We’re never without SKIN SO SOFT Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Towelettes. They protect against mosquitoes and gnats. . . all in a handy little wipe. Just apply and toss. Super convenient and quite discreet for workouts, and outdoor summer activities. And best of all…the scent isn’t gross like most bug sprays!

We are not always brimming with excitement about working out (gasp!). We find that using a fragrance everyday has a way of energizing us and reminding us of the awesome day we had before. La Prairie Cellular Energizing Body Spray (Felicia’s fav), is a mix of Rudy Red Grapefruit, Cardamon and Verbena. Christene is still crushing on Glorious Mandarin from Gucci Flora Garden Collection, that has notes of Mandarin, Peony, Jasmine, ambergris, white musk, creamy wood and pina colada accord. If you are looking to find your own workout fragrance try something with citrus, you will definitely get a boost.

There you have it folks, a run down of how we work on our fitness at TTB. We do recognize that the average person might not have time for all this, but for us, it’s a breeze. The one thing that is non-negotiable in this whole run down is the SPF (I bet you thought it was clothing). Sunscreen is an absolute must 365 days per year, no matter your skin tone. Get busy, beauties, because there will be #NoTShirtOnTheBeach. Starting today, we will post all workout updates with our own unique hashtag, #TTBFitLife. Join us!

Super fit ThisThatBeauty Contributor Christene Carr (@ChristeneCarr) gives Prancing Leopard Organic Active Wear a whirl. Her thoughts . . .

When buying workout clothes I generally scout out whatever is on sale and available in my size…go on, judge me. Aside from price and size, usually, my only other criteria is that the gear is constructed of a cotton blend.

After working out in Prancing Leopard’s Wakhan Pamir Capris I suddenly started hating all of my bargain basement workout clothes. The fabric is extremely soft. The seams and stitches are in all the right places, which makes them excellent for stretching exercises. The cotton doesn’t pill, so even though my legs tend to rub together [pretend you didn’t just read that] and after several wears and washes, the capris look almost good as new. The fabric used to make the capris and most of the other fitness clothing is “moisture wicking” — this means that even after sweating like a pig, my pants aren’t stuck to me body, making me feel uncomfortable, icky, and gross. After reading all about my experience with Prancing Leopard’s Wakhan Pamir Capris, I’m sure you are dying to learn a bit more about Prancing Leopard.

Prancing Leopard is an organic line of dance, yoga and fitness clothing that was started by Sevda and Bert Holland because they “could not find organic active wear that was stylish and comfortable enough to go beyond [their] yoga, dance and fitness activities so [they] could wear it throughout [their] busy, multi-tasking days.” Not only is this company concerned with how breathable, comfortable and environmentally friendly their clothes are, but they are also concerned with the well being of people and animals. The company donates a percentage of online sales to a yoga studio chosen by the buyer.

In addition, Prancing Leopard sells artisanal pieces, such as knit leg warmers and crochet necklaces that are handmade by women in under served communities. The company also donates a portion of their profits to the snow leopard trust. Prancing Leopard is definitely “feel good” clothing, but you won’t just feel good because you’re working out in clothes that are soft and extremely comfy, you’ll also feel good knowing that you’re not harming the environment, you’re giving back to the community and you’re helping very adorable snow leopards.
