I haven’t worn a Halloween costume since I was a tween but I am not a complete Halloween Grinch. My 9-year old daughter is obsessed with the holiday, so my job is to joyfully do her bidding in our annual creative costume collab. The other way I celebrate (besides stealing her candy) is with a festive Halloween mani. Here are a few of my DIY faves.

Tattoos & Stickers

KISS Nail Tattoos - HNST02

Nail tattoos are an easy way to create the perfect nail design. I like to start with a long-wearing polish – this year’s Halloween favorite is the no-cure gel from Boots No. 7 in Orange Spice ($6.74 at Drugstore). Allow the color to dry and get to decorating!

Jamberry Halloween2

The Halloween Ghoulish Nail Tattoos ($2.99 at Bejour) from Kiss Nails work just like regular temporary tats and comes with all the dripping blood, spiders and spider webs that you’ll need for the creepiest nails ever. Top with the Boots No. 7 Gel Top Coat ($6.74 at Drugstore).

Nail Wraps

Jamberry Halloween1

If you prefer fewer steps and a perfectly placed design, wrap your nails! Jamberry ($15 at Jamberry) has a fabulous selection of creepy scenes. Applying nail wraps take a little getting used to but once you figure it out, they are a great one-step option.

3 Express Yourself

Feeling creative? I sat with Styleseat stylist, Mimi Wilson, for a Halloween how-to. She called her first design, “Grown Up Candy Corn”.

Here’s her step-by-step:

Step 1
Step 1: Apply white polish
Step 2
Step 2: Using a makeup sponge, dab on bits of orange, black and yellow (one color at a time)
Step 3
Step 3: Complete the look with a matte topcoat

Step 4

Products used: Essie colors and Essie Matte About You ($8.49 at Target)

Mimi also demo’d her spider web design, using black polish and So Easy Stripe Rite ($3.99 at Sally Beauty). Because this takes a really steady hand, I would paint all the nails black and do one spider web per hand. Per Mimi, the new accent finger is the index – the ring finger is out.

FYI, if you are not familiar, Styleseat is a beauty and wellness service concierge. You can order up anything from manicures to acupuncture and arrange a home or salon visit in 15,000 cities.

We’ve all had those moments when we wished we had beauty products that suited us perfectly. But while most of us spend our lives searching, TV commentator and “professional girlfriend” Bobbie Thomas and philanthropist Andrea DeVos Abraham took the bull by the horns and created their dream products themselves. They formed the company ProGirl in 2013 and their first collection is Woosh Beauty, a well-designed lineup of essentials, including makeup palettes, lip glosses, mascara, a makeup bag and makeup mirror. Woosh is launching on HSN at 7pm ET on October 29th.

I had a chance to see the products in action at a recent launch event and I was impressed!  Having developed many of the products for the beauty brand I co-founded, Three Custom Color Specialists, I am admittedly tough-to-please when it comes to beauty products. What I appreciate about Woosh is that these ladies were thinking when they created these products, not just making something they thought would sell. Here are a few of my picks.

Fold Out Face

This versatile palette is available in five skin tones and contains a carefully edited selection of eye shadows, concealers, blushes, contours and face powders. Easy-to-follow instructions included! ($79.95) at HSN

Flex and Curl Mascara & Lash Shield

Woosh Flex and Curl Mascara

The Flex and Curl Mascara is a nice, non-clumpy formula, great for daytime. What’s cool is that when you twist the top, the wiper curves, giving you more application options. The Lash Shield tool makes mascara application mess-free and totally in your control. ($29.95) at HSN

Spin On Gloss

Woosh Beauty

With eight beautiful shades in four color families, you will definitely find your new essential gloss.  The formula is a winner – no scent and no sticky feel, just luxuriously smooth. The unique tip spins as you apply, so no rotating necessary! ($35.95 for a duo, $23.95 each) at HSN

Check out the whole collection yourself on HSN.com, or better yet, watch Bobbie do her thing on the 29th during The Beauty Report!

After such a steamy summer, everyone I know was clamoring for sweater weather.  Sadly, with chillier temps comes pasty skin for many of us. If you’re among the hordes who feel lackluster after your summer glow fades, it’s time to go faux.  Afraid of looking like a streaky creamsicle and smelling like a perm? Fear not! Faux tanning products have come a long way — here are 6 products  to help you achieve beautiful bronze skin.

Fake the Glow -- 6 Products for Beautiful Bronze Skin

Skin Authority Sunless Tanner

This yummy smelling self-tanner for face and body is applied just like any emollient lotion and reaches it’s full bronzey glory in about two hours. It’s enriched with Vitamins C & E to soften your skin and the combination of exfoliating and sunless tanning agents allows for an even faux tan.  Apply every three days for more bronzey goodness. Skin Authority Sunless Tanner ($36) at Skin Authority

Artis Fluenta Oval 10 Brush

To ensure a nice, even application even in those crinkly spots like elbows or knees, exfoliate in the shower, dry off and apply in circular motions with the hands, or better yet, with a big, soft brush like the luxurious Artis Fluenta Oval 10 Brush ($90) at Bergdorf Goodman.

Comodynes Self-Tanning Towelettes for Face & Body in Natural or Intensive ($16 for 8) at Drugstore.com

Keep a couple of these single-use, moisturizing cloths in your travel bag. They can be used on the face or body and activate in three hours.

Temporary Bronzing

If you’d rather be bronze just for a day, try Per-fékt’s Liquid Gold Illuminating Perfector ($28.50) at Ulta. This cream can be used on the face and body but also, get ready…on the hair for a golden glow. It has blurring technology for masking imperfections, like uneven skin tone and minor cellulite — when used on the hair, it tames frizz!

1029699 Honey Bronze Highlighting Dome 01 -2

For spot bronzing, The Body Shop Honey Bronze Highlighting Dome ($16), comes in three glowey shades and contains nourishing Fair Trade honey from Ethiopia.

Guerlain Four Seasons Bronzing Powder ($76) at Bloomingdale’s

Prefer a powder? Guerlain pretty much invented the bronzer and this one is available in six shades. Each compact contains 4 different colors for customizing your “tan”, as well as contouring and highlighting.

The tornado that is New York Fashion Week has come to a close.  Come spring, many of us will be experimenting with the top styles of the week, like flowy, pajama-like pants, off the shoulder or midriff-bearing tops and stylish sneakers. But what NYFW-inspired beauty trend will you try?

It's Peachy - NYFW Beauty Trend to Love
It’s Peachy – NYFW Beauty Trend to Love

Customarily, the spring shows are awash with flawless “no makeup” makeup looks and this NYFW was no different. But why invest time and money into recreating a no makeup face (which actually requires makeup), when you can get colorful with the monochromatic peachy looks we spied on the catwalks of BCBG Max Azria, Carolina Herrera, Coach, Derek Lam  & Narciso Rodriguez?  This fresh and light face, perfect for the spring, featured peach tones on the lips, cheeks and the eyes.  Pantone also called out peach as a top spring trend in their spring 2016 color report. What I love about peach is that because it’s a blend of cool pink and warm orange, it works on virtually all skin tones.

Clinique All About Eyeshadow in Peach Pop at Nordstrom, $16.

L’Oreal Paris True Match Super Blendable Blush in Apricot Kiss at Ulta, $10.99.

Want something a little bolder? Make a statement with a matte orangey-red lip from the catwalks of Jason Wu or Oscar de la Renta. Tip: the skin should be as flawless as possible and be sure to use little to no color on the cheeks or eyes.

I like to keep things simple in my beauty routine, so when I heard about multi-functional Micellar Water, I had to investigate. Micellar Water is new to the US, at least in broad distribution, but it turns out that it’s an age-old French beauty staple, popular especially in Paris in times when water has been in short supply. Claims vary slightly from brand to brand, but the general message is that these soap and alcohol-free “waters”, which contain cleansing molecules called Micelles, remove makeup (even eye makeup) and cleanse and tone the skin.

I wondered if they varied wildly from brand to brand, like BB Creams do, but it turns out that they don’t. I got my hands on several bottles, and while there were some differences, like scent and packaging, they were all very similar.

Worth trying?  Definitely. Every one I tried removed makeup well – even spackle-level TV makeup.  My skin felt cleansed but not tight and I loved the convenience of not rinsing!  My one qualm would be the required use of a cotton ball or pad every time. I can’t part with my Clarisonic and creamy cleanser in the morning, but I have fully switched to Micellar Water in the evenings.  My two favorites were only faintly fragranced with a fresh scent.

Simple Micellar Water

This water contains Vitamin B3, C and Glycerin to nourish the skin and Micelles in Triple Purified Water. Simple Micellar Water ($7.99) at Drugstore.com

This water is oil-free and contains cucumber and chamomile to soothe and hydrate the skin while Micelles cleanse. NARS Makeup Removing Water ($27.99) at FragranceNet.com

So, it’s getting real. It started out with a lonely silver straggler (which you promptly yanked out), progressed to a smattering of silver hairs (which you also yanked out, one by painful one) and just like that, you are officially gray.  Brave enough to own it?  Be a lover not a fighter! Here are 5 Products to Enhance Naturally Gray Hair and keep you looking smashing.

Brightening Shampoo

Natures Gate henna shampoo

Gray hair sucks up color from hair products, the environment and even the oil from your scalp. To keep your grays looking vibrant rather than like dishwater, use a brightening shampoo. If you only have mild yellowing or dullness, try the Nature’s Gate Henna Shine-Enhancing Shampoo ($8.39) which utilizes Henna to naturally brighten the hair.  For hair that is more noticeably yellow, try the Phyto Phytargent Brightening Shampoo ($22). This blue shampoo will dramatically brighten your grays, but don’t leave it in for more than a minute or so, unless you’re going for a blue-haired old lady look.

Root Touch-Up

Age Beautiful Root Touch Up

If you’re going gray in a pattern that you’re not thrilled with, ask your stylist to add artful lowlights to showcase the silver. As it is with any hair color, you’ll get roots in between touchups and who needs that?Age Beautiful Root Touch-Up Spray ($9.99) will cover up the new growth between shampoos. If you just need to cover a few hairs here and there, Tyra Ménage à Brow ($22), is a great solution. This two-sided felt tip marker is designed for brows – hence the name – but works just as nicely on the hair. Great for covering grays in the brows, too!

Thickening Fibers

bosley hair_thickening_fibers_large

More women experience hair loss than you might think. If you are experiencing hair loss but want to wear your hair grey, Bosley Professional Strength Thickening Fibers in Gray ($30) will give the appearance of thicker hair at the scalp. It’s not hair, but it certainly looks like it!

Probiotics are typically found in yogurt or supplements and can quiet irritated bellies and prevent digestive issues.  Guess what? When applied topically, this “good bacteria” soothes redness, calms irritation and makes angry, inflamed skin happy again.

Need a little skin relief? You could slather a spoonful of Fage on your face, or you could just try some of these fabulous probiotic skincare products.

Elizabeth Arden Superstart Skin Renewal Booster

Elizabeth Arden SuperStart copy

This cooling serum booster has a light, herbal scent and uses a probiotic complex to help make your skin more resilient. Glasswort, sea fennel and flaxseed extracts moisturize and improve the look and feel of the skin. Lightweight and great for all skin types, this serum officially launches in September, but you can get it right now at Nordstrom.  $65 at Nordstrom

Bioelements Probiotic Anti-Aging Serum

Bioelements Probiotic-Anti-Aging-Serum

Why am I recommending two probiotic serums? Because this one is a richer formulation, better for dryer skin. This rich serum is great for dryer skin. It’s very soothing and smells like roses. Just wanted to give you options! $69 at Bioelements

Korres Suncare Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Korres Suncare Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30

If you’re not already wearing SPF every day, the time to start is NOW. Remember, the sun shines all-year-‘round! You will love the light, almost watery texture of this yogurt-infused, vitamin-packed fluid that in addition to protecting the skin from the sun’s rays also hydrates and reduces inflammation. $35 at Sephora

Clinique Redness Solutions Makeup Foundation SPF 15

Clinique redness makeup

This calming, oil-free, probiotic-enriched makeup is tough on redness and irritation. My favorite way to use it is as a spot treatment. It’s full coverage but blends easily so I put it where I need it and go. The one downside? Only 6 shades.  I would like to see them add a few deeper tones to the range. $27 at Macy’s

TULA Probiotic Skin Care Discovery Collection

TULA Probiotic Skincare

This kit is a great way to get the full probiotic experience. The cleanser, serum, day & night cream and eye cream are all packed with yogurt extract, rice proteins, vitamins A, C & E, and green tea and blueberry extracts. The products will leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed, but also calm and nourished. $49 at QVC

New York Fashion Week is over and we’re left to make sense of it all. What’s here to stay and what’s a has-been? Are we doing matte lips again? Is the winged cat eye so over? Well Beauty Expert Trae Bodge, co founder of Three Custom Color Specialists, returns to ThisThatBeauty to offer our bi-annual New York Fashion Week Beauty Trend Report. Why painstakingly cull through show after show when we can break it down for you plain and simple. Take it away, Trae!

Spring/Summer 2012 Trends from the Runway

Hello again – I’m SO thrilled to be back with another beauty trend report for ThisThatBeauty!  I’m sitting here on a crisp, Fall day trying to fast forward in my mind to the light and flirty days of Spring and Summer 2012.  All it takes is another tour of the runways (thank you, www.style.com!) and I’m in a Springy, Summery state of mind.

What struck me first about this season were the colorful lips. I always feel a bit sad when there is a strong return to nude or neutral lips, so I was excited to see a real commitment to bold, defined lips this go ‘round.

The two lip trends that were the most memorable for me were the Peach Lip and the Red Lip.

Peach Lip

Several of the peach lips were paired with soft, demure eyes, like at Nicholas K, Candela and Porter Grey.  This is a very fresh, wearable “every day” look.  Most of us can make this look work because peach is extremely wearable.  Because it is the perfect balance between warm (red) and cool (pink), peach suits most skin tones.

The peach lip look that I really like was at Jill Stuart (pictured).  The peach lip was pronounced and matte and the eyes were rimmed with dramatic black.  It was the perfect play against her powerful, color blocked styles.  Because of the dramatic eye, this is a tougher look for the every day woman to pull off, but hey – isn’t runway supposed to be larger than life any way?

Red Lip

Red lips often make an appearance on the runway, but this season’s reds were notably bright and commanding.  These lips were most often paired with peach cheeks, soft eyes and a defined brow.  My favorite examples of this were at Jason Wu, Jen Kao and Joy Cioci (pictured).

Now, in terms of being wearable, a red lip is not for the faint of heart.  Of course, Felicia of TTB ROCKS a fabulous red lip, but she’s got the personality to match!  If you’re feeling bold, go for it, but if you’re more on the shy side, try a red gloss (or red lipstick mixed with lip balm), for a softer look.

The WOW Factor

Now, I don’t know if the super dramatic black-rimmed eyes I saw at Marc Jacobs, Monique L’Hullier and L.A.M.B. (pictured) will end up being a trend, but I thought the look was so fabulous that I felt compelled to write about it.  I question the trendiness of this look, simply because it would take so much work to make it happen!  Eyes were literally scrawled with black, and often winged out in a dramatic, almost Japanese-inspired style.  Lashes were heavy and fake and brows were very defined as well, particularly at L.A.M.B.   Fabulous!
