Ahh...inside the tents!

Fashion Week is upon. No. Seriously. It’s like this week. First it’s FNO (see our FNO rundown here) and then…BOOM, full on #NYFW. But before nonstop shows, breakneck speed note-taking on my iPad, impossible deadlines, and everything in between, I make time to properly prep and get my booty, I mean, beauty in shape for the rigorous week ahead.

Read on as I share my Fashion Week Beauty prep for skin & hair. . .

Facial: About a week or so before Fashion Week, I always make time for a really thorough facial. The week promises to be incredibly stressful so getting my oily, acne-prone skin into shape in advance is a wise move. I visited Mikki at Mario Badescu and let me tell you — Mikki gave me the business! She worked me over and it was awesome. I walked in looking a super congested, hormonally broken out wreck . . . and my skin now looks great. I love that Mikki was extremely thorough and committed to getting me all cleaned up. And let me tell you, she’s strong for a petite gal! Immediately post-facial my skin looked like I was wearing foundation — and clearly I was not. Yep, I’ll be seeing Mikki again in six weeks….a girl can get used to this!

Proper Skin Maintenance: While the aforementioned facial laid a solid foundation, proper skin care is key. I’m currently managing my adult acne prone skin with…

1) TRIA Skin Perfecting Blue Light. I use this blue light treatment device (the same technology used by dermatologists) to zap the bacteria deep within the skin…the acne causing bacteria that leads to painful breakouts [and naturally, at the most inopportune moments – like Fashion Week]. I treat with TRIA once per day for five minutes. And yes it really works. . . this is my second device, after losing the first one. I highly recommend this as preventative tool for acne-prone skin!

2) Mario Badescu Drying Mask. Like most Mario Badescu products, Drying Mask is one of those skin care saviors that I am never without in my beauty closet. I rely on it to help dry existing pimples and clarify problematic areas before pimples have the opportunity to emerge. While it’s safe to use all over, I generally apply to cheeks and chin (a little area I like to call the “muzzle”)…my most congested areas. And for nights when I do not use the Drying Mask, I balance things out by incorporating  Mario Badescu Healing Soothing Mask. It’s a yin & yang sort of thing.

3) The Body ShopTea Tree Pore Minimiser. You know how we always want what we don’t have?. . . curly girls want stick straight hair & straight girls want coily curls. Well-endowed bellas want a less ample bosom & chesty girls want to frolic in sundresses sans brassiere. . . the list goes on & on. I have notoriously oily skin (though, I’m often told it’s “glowy”) and all I ever want is perfectly matte skin. Luckily, The Body Shop understands my struggle. Incorporating the acne-fighting, natural antiseptic power of tea tree oil, The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimiser immediately softens the appearance of enlarged pores by absorbing and mattifying excess sebum. Unlike most primers that simply prime the skin for makeup application, The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimiser also helps to treat and improve congested skin.

Set Things Straight: For Fashion Week, I am all about straight hair. Given the zillion other things that I have to worry about, I really cannot be bothered with my temperamental, unpredictable, naturally curly hair — So I turn to Sultra The Diva Pressing Iron and Pressing Creme. I first came to know (and quickly love) Sultra back in 2009 when I was a contributor for The Makeup Girl. . . so when I heard that the brand had launched a pressing iron, especially designed to suit the needs of hair like mine. . .  well I wept a unicorn. With so many flat irons and stylers on the market, it’s tough to find one that is suitable for coily hair…one that gets hair straight and smooth, but also does not damage or compromise hair’s natural curl pattern. The Diva’s ThermaGuide™ Plate System, which allows hair to slide across plates without tugging or pulling, and advanced ceramic heater can beautifully style the kinkiest of coils. The grooved side of the plate sort of acts like a comb and helps to smooth the entire length of hair as the plates straighten. Pure genius! For relaxed hair, there is a “relaxed” heat setting and for natural hair, there is a “natural” heat setting. Personally, I like to use the “relaxed” setting for my natural hair. “Relaxed” is a lower temperature and I like to limit my hair’s heat exposure. The Pressing Créme is great because it aids the straightening process and gives my hair shine without feeling heavy.

For a little added sass (and you know how much I love to get sassy), I’ll add a few strips of pastel colored extensions for Fashion Week. I love non-committal ombre.  And lucky you — they’re currently on sale at Sephora for only $9.

(Ahem, it's a curling iron. . . remove your mind from the gutter!)

For a bit more texture (think: soft wayward waves) I like adding The Bombshell Cone Rod Curling Iron to the mix. While we’ve all seen clip-less curling irons, I can guarantee you’ve never seen a clip-less like this. The point of difference is the nubby tapered-barrel. . . it provides mega hold & creates loose, slightly tighter waves at the root and flowy, sexy, messy ringlets at the bottom. Between The Diva and The Bombshell, my hair is NYFW ready!

Stay tuned for my NYFW makeup musts — I’ll rundown the products that help me fake a good night’s sleep, the lipstick that makes my teeth look whither, the highlighter that gives my skin a candlelit glow, and more. Stay tuned! Xx

I have been a huge fan of The Body Shop for maybe 10 years. This Fall The Body Shop launches a myriad of new products from eyeshadows to body cream. One of my favorites from this launch is the Body Butter Duo.  I am a huge proponent of the double layer moisturizing system during winter months and with this product you get both steps in one jar!  Here is how to use this product during winter:  immediately after emerging from the shower, pat your skin dry (leaving it a little damp) then apply the cream. Wait a few minutes then I apply the butter. If you buy one new skin hydrating product this winter…BUY THIS! Your skin will thank you! The Body Butter Duo retails for $18.

Another cool product is the shimmer cube palette – besides being highly pigmented and crease resistant, this product is perfectly packaged. Each shade is packaged separately and you can mix and match your favorite shade for a customized palette that is all your own. The shadows are made with fair trade Marula oil which gives the formulation its gliding and crease resistant capabilities. Shimmer cubes retail for $22.

Next up is the Extra Virgin minerals. While I was not able to find my exact shade, I was able to mix and match to find something right for my complexion.  What impressed me most about these minerals is a distinct lack of ashen, Morticia Addams-esque look after application  All but one or two mineral foundations that I have tried have left me looking as I might be from beyond the grave, not so with Extra Virgin minerals. For only $25 you can find your perfect foundation!

The Body Shop’s  Carbon Eye-definer pencil is made from FSC certified wood and has a built in smudger on one end. It is defined as a “water-resistant formulation, with a smooth texture for a bendable and smudgable effect.” I think this is what makes the carbon brown

shade perfect, not just as a eyeliner but also a brow pencil. My brows are thin and almost invisible in some places this pencil does an amazing job of filling and defining my brows and it lasts all day.  I think this very formulation and this colour should be rebranded as the best brow pencil EVER, with my name in fine print :). Carbon Eye-definer pencil retails for $13.

Next month The Body Shop will introduce the Natrulift skincare collection. The line is an innovative collection of anti-aging creams formulated with organic pomegranate. Natrulift combines the natural properties of pomegranate with the latest in skincare technology. The complete collection includes:

  • Softening Cream Cleanser  – a moisturizing and softening cream based cleanser
  • Softening Facial Wash – a gentle foaming cleanser
  • Softening Toner  – a refreshing and revitalizing toner
  • Firming Serum – an intensive treatment to be applied before using moisturizer to help improve skin tone and elasticity
  • Firming Day Cream – providing 12-hour hydration as well as having firming and softening benefits with illuminating micro-minerals
  • Firming Night Cream – a clinically proven night treatment designed to target fine lines and wrinkles

The primary ingredient in the range is organic anti-oxidant rich pomegranate, with extracts taken from the skin, peel and seeds. The creams are also formulated with brazil-nut oil, aloe vera and Community Trade honey.

The Body Shop reports that in a consumer trial of over 100 women, 63% of participants noticed firmer skin on day one of using Natrulift Firming Day Cream.  With results like this, I imagine September 1 (the product launch date) will be a very busy day for The Body Shop!

Fridays with Felicia: An intimate look behind the curtain as I share my favorite style/beauty discoveries and ThisThatBeauty shenanigans from previous week.

What a week…phew! I’ve been so consumed with fashion/beauty press previews that I almost forgot to pick winners for my “The MakeupShow” giveaway. Luckily @meaganshea tweeted *several* times to remind me:). The two lucky winners are:

  • GlamGigs
  • Tai_Chi (you still need to tweet me back with your full name so that I can put you on my guest list)

Congrats ladies! You get to attend TheMakeupShow and meet makeup greats like my boo to the right, the legendary James Vincent (google him. LOL). You may each bring a friend. So for those of you who did not win…friend these gals on Twitter and try to tag along!

I popped in on several beauty and fashion press previews this week. Some I’ll highlight here and others I’ll cover in upcoming posts. All in all, I was quite pleased with this week’s presentations!

Lipsy London is en route via select Bloomingdale’s stores and bloomingdales.com.

The trend-happy youth inspired UK brand kicked off their US launch with what else?…a British Afternoon Tea Party.

While Lipsy London offers an extensive collection of tops, bottoms, lingerie, and accessories…the strength of the collection appears to be it’s party dress category — particularly the VIP dress collection.

While viewing the Lipsy collection, I thought a lot about the Lipsy US customer. Who is she? Well given the heavy trend influence (feathers, studs, Grecian one shoulder dresses — oh my!) I’m getting a visual on a young woman who is in her late teens to late 20’s…She is celebrity-style inspired (reads US Weekly religiously)…She parties like its 1999 (and likes her ensemble to be reminiscent of said year, 1999.)….She’s never tardy for the party…She has a smoking hot body and legs that don’t quit.

Speaking of fashion, trend, style, etc — Here’s my Accessory Report for the week:

My favorite new headband comes from New London Pharmacy NY ($8). It is extremely comfortable, does not cause a headband-headache, and is great for dressing up a casual hair style. As you can see from the picture below, I am still doing my two loose romantic braids from last week (they’re so easy going and carefree for spring). My DVF cat eye sunglasses are pretty much a daily staple. I rarely leave the house without them.

With the recent drop in temperature this week, I’ve been rocking my mustard yellow lamb skin with suede detail fingerless gloves. They’re by Jypsea.

The best possible start to my day is a beauty breakfast. This week The Body Shop invited me to attend a beauty editor’s breakfast with their top International Makeup Artist, Chase Aston. During the intimate breakfast Chase walked us through the new Italian baked shadows, blushers, bronzers, and nourishing lip products.

Generally not a fan of shimmer on shimmer, the Italian Baked-to-last eye Color ($14.00) product was a pleasant surprise. The multi-tasking shadow duo contains two shimmer shades but the deepest shade of the two is strongly pigmented and creates beautiful contrast against the lighter shade…as opposed to total wash-out like so many shimmery pairs. The shades can be applied either wet or dry to take eyes from fresh and natural to sexy and intense. I love that the products are mom/on-the-go friendly in that they can be applied and blended seamlessly with the fingers. True story. Now obviously for a more polished look, you would use a brush, but for a simple lid color and light crease contour — your fingers will do!

Delipscious Tinted Lip Balm ($10.00) is perfect for the costumer who wants a subtle hint of shine, moisture, and color. The product contains naturally-derived ingredients and natural food flavoring. It is formulated with 100% food grade ingredients. The four shades feature fruit oil to match your chosen flavor and fruity shade – Peach, Watermelon, Berry or Papaya Crush.

The Body Shop’s International Makeup Artist, Chase Aston calls Sheer Lip Color ($12) the next step up from Delipscious Lip Balm and is perfect for the woman who wants to introduce a stronger color influence to the lip. Sheer Lip Color is available in eight mouth-watering shades.

This week I attended an exclusive preview of Women’s Health Beauty Award winners. Cocktails, manicures, and award winning beauty products — oh my!

I spent time with a rep from Boots and learned about the UK based skin care line that’s developed a very loyal following here in the US.

Here’s a sneak peek of the winning beauty products. The full list will be made public in the June issue of Women’s Health magazine.

In looking over the illustrious display of winners, I was as pleased as punch to spy a number of products that have been featured on ThisThatBeauty. Great minds….

“Fridays with Felicia” would be incomplete without the mention of my nail color du jour. This week I was invited to cover the launch of some exciting new products from Perfect Formula. As of right now, the products are so new that they are not yet available online. I promise future coverage that includes a polish that changes color with your mood! Can you even? Here’s an exclusive sneak peek of the products. More deets soon…I promise!

Have a good weekend!

Finally a return to one of the biggest trends of my early makeup wearing years…orange! Back in the day, I swear you couldn’t tell me nothing. I boldly rocked semi matte orange lips and never once apologized. The return of this trend for Spring is ushered in in a refined and wearable fashion. Bobbi Brown, YSL, The Body Shop, Lancome, and Chantecaille are all taking me back…waay back! Who’s going down memory lane with me?What’s your take on the return of orange? Leave a comment…I want to hear from you!

Lipstick Queen Butterfly Ball Shimmer Treatment Lipstick – $20productshot

Inspired by Mohammed Ali’s famous quote from Rumble in the Jungle “I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”, Lipstick Queen’s latest launch, Butterfly Ball Shimmer Treatment Lipstick, comes in five beautifully subtle shades that are as sheer as the wings of a butterfly. Each shimmer tint contains a hint of turquoise which creates a very flattering blue flash to make your teeth appear whiter. How cool is that? The luscious formula contains nourishing Vitamin E, C, B and Aloe which makes Butterfly Ball Shimmer Treatment incredibly wet, soft, and moisturizing. All five shades are incredibly flattering and sheer enough to be universally flattering.

  • Float – Pale shimmering nude
  • Fly – Hot shimmering pink
  • Trance – Subtle shimmering Raspberry (my fav!)
  • Moment – Sexy shimmering Red
  • Goodbye – Deep shimmering wine

Many many products to review. One Felicia to do all of the writing. While my heart wants to review every single product I spy, my partially manicured hands simply cannot type that fast. Having said that, I have taken the initiative to bring on a contributing writer. This was a really hard decision. ThisThatBeauty is my first born so its hard to relinquish control. But I think I’ve found an awesome guest writer that I am sure you will love.

I have decided to go with someone whom I feel offers a young/fresh approach to makeup. While she’s pretty much a beauty blogging newbie, let’s just say that her love for all things beauty is in the “genes”.

Without further ado, I give you ThisThatBeauty’s Guest Blogger –
My niece, Greysen Glenn :)

Before Greysen Glenn’s entry into the beauty world, she dedicated most of her time to recreational activities like:

and eating her toes

During a recent visit with Auntie F (that’s me) I discovered Greysen Glenn’s panache for makeup. So I quickly recruited this young bella to write for TTB. Please check out Greysen Glenn’s review of:

Given Greysen Glenn’s limited vocabulary, lets go with The Body Shop’s product description:

Give your lips a natural sheen while conditioning them with an everyday gloss that can be worn alone or over Lip Color. Moisturizing Community Trade marula oil from Namibia leaves lips soft and supple. Passion fruit fragrance adds a refreshingly juicy scent.

Again, given Greysen’s limited vocabulary, I am walking her through her first product review:

Auntie F: Greysen Glenn, show my ThisThatBeauty readers how the product looks up close.

Auntie F: OK, now put a little on and show my readers how the color looks against your complexion

Auntie F: OK, now turn the product towards the camera. Let Auntie help you.

Auntie F: OK, now show my readers the best application method for this product. Should they use a lip brush?…
Greysen Glenn: No. Fingers:)

Auntie F: OK, lets get one more shot of you and the product.
Greysen Glenn: OK…like this?

Auntie F: Perfect! How about one more picture?
Greysen Glenn: No! No more paparazzi!

Auntie F: Jeez, OK kiddo. Thank you for your review of The Body Shop Lip Gloss Dot:)

So what did you guys think of my Guest Beauty Blogger? I think she has a bright beauty future ahead of her.

Thank you Greysen! You’re welcome to write for Auntie F anytime…so long as I can keep paying you in ice cream:)
