As most of you know I recently turned 40. Yep, 40. There’s a celebratory hash-tag and everything (#WaitWhatSheIs40). Most people don’t dedicate a hash-tag and announce turning 40, but I actually feel amazing about 40. And, if I’m being 100% honest, it doesn’t hurt that most people think I’m 28-29…32 at the oldest.

#WaitWhatSheIs40 -- Fresh faced, me. No makeup. No filter. No soft focus blur. !00% ME at 40....
#WaitWhatSheIs40 — Fresh faced, me. No makeup. No filter. No soft focus blur. 100% ME at 40….

While genetics play a role in how skin ages, good genes are not enough. I believe that proper skin care is your greatest defense against premature aging. And the earlier you start, the better! My skin care philosophy, for years, has always been 1) start early and 2) wear broad spectrum sunscreen daily! In fact, I always advise — if you’re not going to do anything else, at least wear sunscreen. So when I learned about PREP Cosmetics, I knew I had to get on my soap box and preach…
PREP Cosmetics on ThisThatBeauty
The line, created by two moms (one, a Derm) and geared toward young girls is pretty simple, with key ingredients like — ZINC OXIDE (for sun protection),  JOJOBA OIL – (for moisture),  NIACINAMIDE Vitamin B3 and  Vitamin E (for an antioxidant boost).

While I am absolutely not the target age group for PREP Cosmetics, I’m really excited to share a skin care line that speaks to my core skin care values. PREP’s mission is to “educate young girls on the dangers of sun exposure” while making an  impact on the lives of girls around the world through “Share Your Beauty” — a platform with the goal to impart knowledge, encourage unity and inspire the global community of girls. Yes, #girlpower! PREP touches on all of the important stuff that young girls need to thrive. I love that there is a focus on inner and outer beauty. If there’s a young girl in your life, I encourage you to share PREP.

More about PREP
PREP Cosmetics enables every young girl to have a skincare regimen she can call her own and one that provides Powerful Real Everyday Protection. Co-created by Mayo Clinic trained dermatologist Carole Aponte, MD, and her business partner Kelly Barker, PREP Cosmetics has set out to educate young girls on the importance of using preventative skincare. All products are designed to be fresh, fun and easy to incorporate into an ongoing beauty routine. To date, the line includes a purifying daily cleanser, SPF 30 face + body lotion, and SPF 15 lip gloss. Coming soon, PREP Cosmetics will introduce a body wash, a lip gloss collection, nighttime moisturizer, 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, anti-blemish spot treatment, and a SPF 30 tinted moisturizer…and this is just the beginning!

Skincare is sort of my thing, no? Let’s all agree. I mean, I’ve been writing ThisThatBeauty for over seven years, and while we’ve evolved to cover lots more fashion, lifestyle and baby – the core has always been skincare (many years later and THIS Hyperpigmentation blog post is still the most read post on my site). We love to ooh and ahh over pretty colors, but beautiful skin – that’s the thing! So when I learned of Philips PureRadiance Facial Cleansing System, a cleansing brush that claims to clean skin ten times more effective than hand washing alone – I was intrigued. And when I learned that Philips PureRadiance also incorporates Sonic Technology with Advanced Dual Motion, well…I was ready for a trial run!

Philips PureRadiance

Slightly apprehensive, I plunged face first (pun intended) into a four-week trial. When the brush arrived, I first inspected the bristles and thought, “Wow, so soft.” You see, I’ve seen other brushes on the market with rotating bristles and yikes, they all scare me just a little bit…stiff, prickly bristles make me very nervous. But I immediately noticed that the Philips PureRadiance was different. In addition to super soft bristles that gently rotate to dislodge yucky blackheads, surface dirt and debris, two frequencies of sonic pulses go deep down into skin to further break up dirt, dead skin cells and leftover makeup. The gentle rotations don’t tug at or irritate skin…even with twice daily use!

Philips PureRadiance
Philips PureRadiance is now a staple in my daily skincare routine

In a two-week clinical trial (Philips’ findings), women reported 90% deeper pore cleansing, 88% softer skin, 87% more radiant skin and 81% more even tone. And my results are similar – from the very first use, I noticed cleaner, brighter skin. Over time, my skin’s texture feels smoother and my complexion appears more vibrant. I’m also pleased to report not a single pimple emerged during my four-week trial! In addition to the normal and sensitive brush heads, there’s also an exfoliating brush head that I love to use before doing a mask…my skin is just glorious afterwards.

Philips PureRadiance

With cleaner skin, my skin care products are able to penetrate deeper and work even better…making Philips PureRadiance a really nice complement to my existing skin care regimen. So, if you’re super committed to your current skin care lotions and potions, adding Philips PureRadiance to the program will help boost product efficacy without having to swap out your favorite cream or serum.  No matter what your skincare routine (I know I change products seasonally) Philips PureRadiance is the ideal add-on to make sure you’re getting the most out of your products.

In this video I share a bit more about my experiences with Philips PureRadiance and why it’s my new BFF (Beauty Friend Forever). Take a look!

Philips PureRadiance is currently available in select Bed Bath and Beyond retail locations, online and on Philips.com for $149.99.

I’m certain you’re familiar with the old saying: “save the best for last”. Well, that’s sort of the case with my write up of my Orlane Paris experience. While recently in Paris on a little Parisian Beauty Tour, I had the pleasure of not only experiencing a facial treatment at the Maison de la Beauté Orlane, but I also had the opportunity to meet with the Orlane senior team, go behind the scenes and truly get to know the brand.

Me & Orlane Senior Team
With Orlane’s Senior Team

As my faithful followers know, I truly pride myself on honest skin care reviews based on my personal experience with incorporating products in my daily real life. So back to my earlier statement about “saving the best for last”…After leaving Paris, the lovely team at Orlane was kind enough to send me off with several of their most popular products.

Me at Orlane
At Orlane Headquarters in Paris

Before writing about my the product experience, I always feel compelled to dedicate the recommenced about of time before sharing my thoughts. With Orlane, I absolutely wanted to make sure I spent the appropriate amount of time using the products before sharing my thoughts. The price tag is definitely a luxe investment, so again, I needed to give the products my undivided attention for at least 8-10 weeks. And in this case, my time investment really paid off — I saved the best for last!

But first a little background — Orlane is a family owned group, with a strong botanical tradition enhanced with pharmaceutical grade formulations. Truly a haute Parisian beauty brand, Orlane offers prestige, anti aging products for the high demanding skincare needs of extremely discerning customers. The brand’s three pillars are: Anti-aging, Prestige and Institute.

Vintage Orlane
Vintage Orlane

During my visit I learned that Orlane was the first brand to use fresh royal jelly, an ingredient well known for its anti-aging properties. Creme Royale, Orlane’s hero face cream contains fresh royal jelly and 24k gold to help regulate melanin. When I learned that Creme Royale is known for its restorative properties and ability to “bring your skin back to life”, well — I just HAD to try it.

I must admit, overall, my skin is in pretty good shape…I mean, I’m ThisThatBeauty — I know things;) However, over the last year or so, I have started noticing a creeping smile line that seems to intensify with age. And since I clearly do not intend to stop smiling, this pesky little developing smile line has been my litmus test for product trials. Given Creme Royale’s active antioxidant formulation and skin-building properties, I was really hopeful that I would see some improvement in my smile line.

Orlane Creme Royale

It’s been over 10 weeks of testing Orlane Creme Royale and I absolutely see improvement in my smile line. On the right side, the line is not as deep…and on the left side, my smile line is practically gone. When I wear foundation, after a few minutes I would start to notice the settling of foundation into my little smile line. After 10 weeks with Orlane Creme Royale, I don’t get the settling of foundation anymore…because my smile is is significantly re-plumped.

Part of why I keep saying that I “saved the best for last” is because it took weeks of staying committed to Orlane Creme Royale to actually see results. The product (and the price tag) is a commitment. While the cream is proving to be completely effective at addressing my number one pre-mature aging concern, it doesn’t work overnight…and that’s O.K….you just need to stay the course. It’s worth it.

My plan is to continue using Orlane Creme Royale until I reach the end of the jar. Then, the real decision making happens. Do I make the investment and purchase another jar? Well, I have to tell you, while Orlane Creme Royale is quite quite expensive, it’s still way less than Botox or fillers. And I have always said — I will avoid the needle for as long as humanly possible. As a card carrying Beauty Girl, I pride myself on seeking out needle-less options to maintaining my youthful appearance. So when you look at the cost of Orlane Creme Royale from that point of view, it’s actually quite affordable.

In a nutshell, does Orlane Creme Royale work? Absolutely yes! Is it work the luxe price tag? Well, that depends on where you are in your anti-aging skincare routine. Are you *this* close to considering the needle? Do your developing lines and creases drive you bananas? If the answer is yes, then Orlane Creme Royale isn’t as pricey as you think. Because let’s face it — what’s good skin really worth? I think we all know the answer to that questions. It’s priceless!

It’s no surprise that I’ve been paying much closer attention to labels these days. With Baby Benson on board, I can’t be too careful (I mean, she’s heir to my ThisThatBeauty empire!!). So while visiting Paris, I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to get to know Patyka. During my five-day Beauty Tour, I had dinner with Patyka’s President, Pierre, and visited the Patyka Boutique at Printemps.

with Patyka's President, Pierre
After dinner with Patyka’s President, Pierre…& check out the view from his home!

I’ve tried many times (unsuccessfully) to embrace organic skin care. I get it I get it!. . . organic is generally better for you because it’s free of “bad-for-you” chemicals and such. . . blah, blah, blah. Gotcha! But what about product efficacy? I am all for going the greener route, but at the end of the day, I am also (slightly) vain and I need to uphold a certain aesthetic. I don’t want wrinkly eyes or a creased forehead. . . .well not at the tender age of thirty-something. I’ll gladly take my well earned lines of life, at say, 65, but for now, I look to highly effective skin care products to slow down the hands of time. And, generally, I’ve found very few organic skin care products that deliver the results I desire. So when learning of Patyka, a high-performing line of organic skincare, fragrance and bath and body, well — I had questions.

Patyka Boutique
At Patyka’s Boutique in Paris

I first learned of Patyka a couple of years ago and began using their body care products, but had yet to venture into their skincare. So after spending time with the brand in Paris, I decided to take the plunge and commit to a few items for a six week period.

Since returning from Paris I’ve been regularly using:

RADIANT EXFOLIATING MASK: The Radiant Exfoliating Mask is a spectacular anti-aging skin care product. Its intelligent complex of botanical active ingredients moisturize, exfoliate, and tone in three complementary phases, with a single gesture. The mask smooths fine lines, refines the pores and genuinely brightens the complexion.

ROSE FACE TONER: The delicate alcohol-free Rose Face Toner tones, protects, softens, refines skin texture and leaves a sensation of absolute comfort thanks to a remarkable association of 2 key active ingredients: Damask Rose Hydrosol and Biosaccharide Gum 1.

RADIANT EYE CONTOUR: Specifically created for the demanding eye contour area, the targeted chronobiological Radiant Eye Contour skin care product is a unique combination of more than 10 active ingredients with natural anti-aging and anti-fatigue properties. It brightens, relieves congestion, smooths, lifts, and is an excellent make-up base. Signs of fatigue are immediately corrected, the eyes’ radiant glow is infinitely preserved.

Of the three products, one is a clear winner and another is a definite keeper.

RADIANT EXFOLIATING MASK is the clear winner. First of all, you had me at “Radiant”. Anything that promises radiant skin is immediately a cause for pause. I firmly belief that bright, luminous skin is the ultimate sign of youth. Even with a few lines and wrinkles, skin that is vivid, hydrated and bright appears more youthful. I love that RADIANT EXFOLIATING MASK delivers the aforementioned attributes with just one use. The mostly organic (99.55% of ingredients from natural origin &
71.40% of ingredients from organic agriculture) brightening mask is formulated with Avocado, Jojoba, and Sesame oil to moisturize, and Soft Fruit Acids and Bamboo Extract to exfoliate. The moisturizing and exfoliating dual action delivers immediate brightness, visible hydration, and a fresher complexion. If you’re looking for an immediate boost, RADIANT EXFOLIATING MASK is the answer.

As for the ROSE FACE TONER I must, firstly, admit that I am a sucker for a good toner. I believe in the skin balancing, treatment, and prep properties of facial toners….so I am naturally drawn to this soothing, rose water based lotion. I tend to have very oily, acne prone skin, so the soothing, anti-inflammatory nature of rose is a big help. I highly recommend ROSE FACE TONER for most skin types, but I 100% recommend it for super sensitive, acne prone, or easily inflamed skin.

While the RADIANT EYE CONTOUR is certainly comforting and hydrating, I don’t think I’ve used it long enough to speak to its cumulative benefits. I can say that my eye area has experienced no adverse reactions as a result of use. As for smoothing lines and relieving the look of fatigue, I think I’ll be in a better position to evaluate this claim after Baby Benson arrives. *WINK* ..so let’s just say I’ll keep you posted!

BOTTOM LINE: Based upon my six-week trial of the aforementioned Patyka products, I am giving the botanically based skin care line my seal of approval. Partnered with a modern sensibility, innovative technology, and efficacious delivery systems, this organic skin care line proves that it can deliver results on par with its non-organic competitors. If naturally blended ingredients are a key factor in your skincare routine, I absolutely suggest that you give Patyka a try.

While I traveled all the way to France to experience the brand, you can purchase Patyka stateside at: Patyka.com, dermstore.com and Amazon.com.

By a show of hands, who’s enamored with French beauty? Everyone, right?

I absolutely crave the rituals and beauty secrets of French women. There’s just something about the French beauty aesthetic that I cannot get enough of…the mood is chic & understated, yet undeniably present. For years I’ve dabbled in French beauty products ranging from creams and treatments serums, to haircare and color cosmetics.

with Jean Patou Parfumer

I recently had the opportunity to visit Paris and spend intimate time behind-the-scenes with five incredible French brands: Orlane, Leonor Greyl, Jean Patou, Patyka, and Talika.

The thought of this rare experience immediately appealed to me. While pretty colors and lovely packaging send my heart sailing, my expertise as a Beauty Girl is deeply rooting in gaining a deeper understanding of brand heritage, product ingredients, formulation, efficacy, delivery systems, etc.

Orlane Headquaters

So, when offered the chance to travel to Paris and meet with the owners and R&D professionals behind five of Paris’ most successful brands, well — only an act of God could have prevented me from going!

Over the next few weeks, I will share my Parisian Beauty Tour with you:

– You’ll learn all about the life changing Leonor Greyl hair treatment and treatment technique that has forever changed how I care for my hair…I’ll share the products used (lucky you — they’re available in the US) and insider tips on how to get the results of your life.

– I’ll share how I fell in love with fragrance house Jean Patou.

– As a new mom (to be!), I’m really getting into products that are both organic and effective – key word: effective! So learning about Patyka was an absolute pleasure…can’t wait to tell you more about the line and the products with which I’m having tremendous success.

– Beauty innovation gets me going…and, oh the things I learned while visiting with Talika! Stay tuned…

House of Orlane was truly a unique and special experience. During my trip I took lots of video of rarely seen archives and original product packaging. And since my return three weeks ago, I’ve been faithfully using Orlane’s #1 elixir and cream…can’t wait to share more!

Stay plugged in more, more more!

I’ve always been one to share. My toys (as a tyke), my food, my time, and yes…my beauty secrets! While I absolutely love writing product reviews and demystifying the in’s and out’s of the newest beauty, what I enjoy most is the opportunity to chat personally with my readers and dish the kind of beauty wisdom that can be applied across the board, regardless of the specific products your choose to use. So when Wella Professionals asked if I’d share my best kept secrets for pitch-perfect hair, enviable skin, and makeup-musts — well, I jumped at the opportunity. Why? Because beauty is my passion and sharing every ounce of that passion is the very reason I started ThisThatBeauty over five years ago.

So from me to you: My Best Kept Beauty Secrets for Hair, Skin, and Makeup

For bright, clear, even-toned skin, I cannot stress enough the importance of sunscreen 365 days a year. The sun’s harmful rays are the number one cause of pre-mature aging. In simpler language — it’s making you look old! In more eloquent language — it’s causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear as early as your 20’s. Yikes! Around age 60, I’ll happily accept my character-defining smile lines as a little token of a life well lived….but at 30-something, I’ll pass (thank you!). Maintain line-free skin by wearing daily broad spectrum (UVA &UVB) sunscreen. Many of today’s formulations are lightweight and are undetectable under makeup. There are even powdered SPF products that can be applied over makeup. Nice, huh?
Hair: Let’s focus on heat protection. I’m always amazed at the amount of thought and label-reading that goes into selecting the appropriate shampoo and conditioner for a specific hair type…only to have the affects of your nourishing shampoo and deep-conditioning treatment reversed by heat damage during the styling process. Ladies, let’s get it together! If you are applying any type of heat to hair (blow dryer, curling iron, straightening iron) a heat protectant is imperative to shield hair against damage. Failure to comply can result in frayed ends, breakage, and irreversible damage to curls if you’re naturally curly (like me).  Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray can help. The formula lynch-pin, Polyquaternium-16, not only protects hair from heat, but also helps to reduce static electricity, and provide touchable hold. Ask your stylist for Wella or find a Wella salon near you at wellausa.com
Makeup: If I’ve learned anything at all from RuPaul’s Drag Race, I’ve learned that “contour” is a gift from above. But let’s use this technique of shading and highlighting for good, and not over-contoured evil. I love creating soft contour with blush and bronzer….this gives my face a sculpted, more lifted look. Also, if I’m feeling a little plump in the cheeks, in addition to amping up my workout, I go a bit more generous on the bronzer…you’d be surprised what a little well placed contouring can do!
Acne: Ever think about some of the “non beauty product” things you can do to manage your acne? 1) Change pillow cases often. 2) Use a headset with cell phone. 3) Use paper towels after washing face (instead of using the towel that was used to dry your body).
Overall Skincare Maintenance: Remember to evaluate your skin and products often. Maybe the super lightweight moisturizer that was a God send for summer, falls short for winter. Skin changes from season to season and so should your skin care products.

So there you have. . . a few of my best tips for staying beautiful! Xx

It’s week two of my 30-day Meaningful Beauty experience and so far so good. While I will reserve a full product review for the four-week mark, I absolutely want to share my initial thoughts on a few of the products I’m using. . . and bring you up to speed on my “Meaningful Activities”. [Click here for a refresher on my exciting 30-day Meaningful Beauty project]

The most important step of my skin care routine is sunscreen. As many of you know, it’s my beauty nonnegotiable. So naturally, like a moth to a flame, I am drawn to Meaningful Beauty Antioxidant Day Crème SPF 20 UVA/UVB and Skin Brightening Décolleté and Neck Treatment SPF 15. Both are extremely rich and creamy…which is perfect for this time of year. My face and neck feel hydrated and prepped for the elements, without feeling weighed down. While I can’t quite speak to results just yet, I can say that I really appreciate how nourished my face and neck feel immediately after application. And I have no adverse reactions to speak of — this is a major coup as my acne prone skin tends to “show off” if a product is not acneic-skin friendly. Luckily, Meaningful Beauty is playing nice, nice.

Cindy Crawford

I’m following in Cindy Crawford’s footsteps for 30-days, I am using Meaningful Beauty as well as engaging in meaningful activities. Per Cindy, this is the way to a truly fulfilling life. (No arguments there!)

So for Meaningful Activity #1, I decided to have a long overdue dinner with a dear friend. We were high-school buds and have managed to reconnect through our love of beauty, fashion, and the arts. My friend is a film maker — a rather talented one at that.

She’s one of those rare self-assured creatures who knew her path in life from a very early age. You see, we both attended a performing arts high school. And while I was bounced from disillusions of being either an actress or a playwright or whatever, my dear friend, Nefertite Nguvu, knew very early on that she wanted to be a film maker. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I have always admired her determination and direction.

With Nef at fundraiser for her current project, In The Morning.
With Nef at a fundraiser for her current project, In The Morning.

So, back to my meaningful activity with Nef. She’s been hard at work on making her current project, In The Morning, a big screen success. She’s invested untold hours and personal finances into bringing this film to fruition. She’s worked tirelessly to write, cast, fund-raise, direct, etc, etc. And just recently, Nef submitted In The Morning to Sundance. Phew! Girlfriend, really deserved a break. So, I decided it was high time we had dinner.

We dined at the cutest little Italian cafe, Lugo Caffé. Over dinner we toasted Nef’s success. She’s deeply dedicated to quality movie making and I applaud her.

It’s so important that we take the time to support and encourage our friends. Especially our fiercely independent friends who march to the beat of an equally independent drum. It’s not an easy walk. It takes vision, unshakable courage and conviction. Bravo, Nef, Bravo!

Stay tuned as I share more meaningful activities over the next few weeks.

About In The Morning:  In The Morning is about love and its inevitable change/decline.  It charts the emotional anatomy of several relationships over the course of one day.  Permutations of passion, sorrow, joy and brutal honesty fuel the lives of a group of inter-connected New Yorkers.  Friends: Harper, Ravi, Fez, Bly and Amara, gather to bid farewell to one of their own moving abroad, and debate the compromise and loss of their youthful ideals about marriage, fidelity, life and love.  Two lovers: Malik and Cadence, meet to ceremoniously end a whirlwind romance that has collapsed under the weight of fears, obligations and regrets.  A couple: Zuri and Leal, sift through the remains of their broken relationship as they try to make a life altering decision, journeying through the bitter heartbreak that comes with faded love, disintegrated trust, and dreams abandoned.  For everyone, life will be indelibly altered in the morning.

Simply stated, In The Morning is about love and transitions.  It examines the complexities of love from the perspective of three women in the midst of some hard won self-transformation.  It’s a mood piece that weaves together three stories about personal growth and the power of choice and action.

When it comes to new beauty, you know me — game on! I mean. . . is my blog’s tagline not, “Benefit from my Obsession?” I joyfully and tirelessly sift through pretty packaging and lofty claims, all to uncover the best new beauty that you truly need to know.

Over the years I’ve blogged about my obsession with beauty infomercials. If I flip through the channels and come across one – it’s on! I seriously have a thing for these scripted 30-minute programs that are designed to pique, capture, and hold your interest…and then ultimately compel you to buy! Maybe it’s the beauty girl in me or maybe it’s because I secretly long for a career as a shopping network host (true story!). . . but whatever the reason, I recently found myself mesmerized by Meaningful Beauty by Cindy Crawford.

Meaningful Beauty Crème de Sérum: “Crème de la crème treatment takes a triple approach to combating the signs of aging with three powerful anti-aging ingredients: superantioxidant melon complex, anti-aging peptides and hyaluronic acid. “

For starters, clearly Cindy Crawford knows a thing or two about aging gracefully. She’s gorgeous! And not in the my-forefead-no-longer-moves sort of way. She really appears to take good care of her skin. My theory is that lots of preventative treatment in her 20’s has a great deal to do with the incredible skin she’s enjoying in her 40’s. Oh, so that’s where Meaningful Beauty comes in — it’s Cindy’s breakthrough secret for younger looking skin. Developed with Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh, Anti-Aging Specialist, Meaningful Beauty is a comprehensive a skin care system that’s designed to moisturize, protect, hydrate, and rejuvenate. The formula lynchpin? A super anti-oxidant derived from a rare melon found in the South of France. What’s so incredible about this particular melon, you ask? Well, apparently, it decays at a much slower rate than traditional melon. Hmm. . .

Meaningful Beauty Skin Brightening Décolleté and Neck Treatment SPF 15
Firming Chest & Neck Crème: “Helps to firm, smooth and revitalize the often neglected chest and neck area. This new, advanced formula includes a skin brightening complex designed to diminish the appearance of age spots and SPF 15 to help protect skin against future damage.”

Well color me intrigued! For the next 30-days I’m going to give Meaningful Beauty a whirl. So follow along as I delve into the line and put the claims to the test. The complete line includes (I have placed an asterisk next to the products that I’m jonesing to try):

Skin Softening Cleanser

Antioxidant Day Crème SPF 20 UVA/UVB*

Crème de Sérum

Skin Brightening Décolleté and Neck Treatment SPF 15 *

Lifting Eye Crème–Advanced Formula*

Glowing Serum

Wrinkle Smoothing Capsules – Advanced Formula

Also for 30-days, to truly mimic the life of Cindy Crawford, who believes that “living a healthy life and staying young and beautiful is half about your skincare/beauty regimen and half about how you actually live your life.” (Amen, sister!), I’ll be engaging in lots of “meaningful” activities and tagging them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) as #CindyCrawfordYoung and @MeaningfulBty. My meaningful activities might include dinner with a dear friend in need of a break, volunteering down the shore post-Sandy, or treating my mom to a mani/pedi. You’ll just have to follow along to see!

So let’s go. Here’s to the next 30-days with Meaningful Beauty! Will I emerge a dead-wringer for Cindy Crawford? Probably not, but hey – a girl can dream. Will I emerge with improved skin? Well, I certainly hope so.

Be sure to follow me on my social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Viddy) @ThisThatBeauty. Remember the hashtag #CindyCrawfordYoung. And also follow Meaningful Beauty at @MeaningfulBty.

Ahh...inside the tents!

Fashion Week is upon. No. Seriously. It’s like this week. First it’s FNO (see our FNO rundown here) and then…BOOM, full on #NYFW. But before nonstop shows, breakneck speed note-taking on my iPad, impossible deadlines, and everything in between, I make time to properly prep and get my booty, I mean, beauty in shape for the rigorous week ahead.

Read on as I share my Fashion Week Beauty prep for skin & hair. . .

Facial: About a week or so before Fashion Week, I always make time for a really thorough facial. The week promises to be incredibly stressful so getting my oily, acne-prone skin into shape in advance is a wise move. I visited Mikki at Mario Badescu and let me tell you — Mikki gave me the business! She worked me over and it was awesome. I walked in looking a super congested, hormonally broken out wreck . . . and my skin now looks great. I love that Mikki was extremely thorough and committed to getting me all cleaned up. And let me tell you, she’s strong for a petite gal! Immediately post-facial my skin looked like I was wearing foundation — and clearly I was not. Yep, I’ll be seeing Mikki again in six weeks….a girl can get used to this!

Proper Skin Maintenance: While the aforementioned facial laid a solid foundation, proper skin care is key. I’m currently managing my adult acne prone skin with…

1) TRIA Skin Perfecting Blue Light. I use this blue light treatment device (the same technology used by dermatologists) to zap the bacteria deep within the skin…the acne causing bacteria that leads to painful breakouts [and naturally, at the most inopportune moments – like Fashion Week]. I treat with TRIA once per day for five minutes. And yes it really works. . . this is my second device, after losing the first one. I highly recommend this as preventative tool for acne-prone skin!

2) Mario Badescu Drying Mask. Like most Mario Badescu products, Drying Mask is one of those skin care saviors that I am never without in my beauty closet. I rely on it to help dry existing pimples and clarify problematic areas before pimples have the opportunity to emerge. While it’s safe to use all over, I generally apply to cheeks and chin (a little area I like to call the “muzzle”)…my most congested areas. And for nights when I do not use the Drying Mask, I balance things out by incorporating  Mario Badescu Healing Soothing Mask. It’s a yin & yang sort of thing.

3) The Body ShopTea Tree Pore Minimiser. You know how we always want what we don’t have?. . . curly girls want stick straight hair & straight girls want coily curls. Well-endowed bellas want a less ample bosom & chesty girls want to frolic in sundresses sans brassiere. . . the list goes on & on. I have notoriously oily skin (though, I’m often told it’s “glowy”) and all I ever want is perfectly matte skin. Luckily, The Body Shop understands my struggle. Incorporating the acne-fighting, natural antiseptic power of tea tree oil, The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimiser immediately softens the appearance of enlarged pores by absorbing and mattifying excess sebum. Unlike most primers that simply prime the skin for makeup application, The Body Shop Tea Tree Pore Minimiser also helps to treat and improve congested skin.

Set Things Straight: For Fashion Week, I am all about straight hair. Given the zillion other things that I have to worry about, I really cannot be bothered with my temperamental, unpredictable, naturally curly hair — So I turn to Sultra The Diva Pressing Iron and Pressing Creme. I first came to know (and quickly love) Sultra back in 2009 when I was a contributor for The Makeup Girl. . . so when I heard that the brand had launched a pressing iron, especially designed to suit the needs of hair like mine. . .  well I wept a unicorn. With so many flat irons and stylers on the market, it’s tough to find one that is suitable for coily hair…one that gets hair straight and smooth, but also does not damage or compromise hair’s natural curl pattern. The Diva’s ThermaGuide™ Plate System, which allows hair to slide across plates without tugging or pulling, and advanced ceramic heater can beautifully style the kinkiest of coils. The grooved side of the plate sort of acts like a comb and helps to smooth the entire length of hair as the plates straighten. Pure genius! For relaxed hair, there is a “relaxed” heat setting and for natural hair, there is a “natural” heat setting. Personally, I like to use the “relaxed” setting for my natural hair. “Relaxed” is a lower temperature and I like to limit my hair’s heat exposure. The Pressing Créme is great because it aids the straightening process and gives my hair shine without feeling heavy.

For a little added sass (and you know how much I love to get sassy), I’ll add a few strips of pastel colored extensions for Fashion Week. I love non-committal ombre.  And lucky you — they’re currently on sale at Sephora for only $9.

(Ahem, it's a curling iron. . . remove your mind from the gutter!)

For a bit more texture (think: soft wayward waves) I like adding The Bombshell Cone Rod Curling Iron to the mix. While we’ve all seen clip-less curling irons, I can guarantee you’ve never seen a clip-less like this. The point of difference is the nubby tapered-barrel. . . it provides mega hold & creates loose, slightly tighter waves at the root and flowy, sexy, messy ringlets at the bottom. Between The Diva and The Bombshell, my hair is NYFW ready!

Stay tuned for my NYFW makeup musts — I’ll rundown the products that help me fake a good night’s sleep, the lipstick that makes my teeth look whither, the highlighter that gives my skin a candlelit glow, and more. Stay tuned! Xx

How do you get your beauty? Are you a brick & mortar or a click & buy kind of girl? It’s likely you’re a hybrid of the two. Personally, for trying new products, it’s usually the person-to-person contact that seals the deal for me…but for replenishment products, I generally click, add to cart, and checkout. But over the years, with the growing influence of social media, I’ve been known to make online purchases – sight unseen – purely based on the opinion or “thumbs up” from a trusted online influencer. And I know that many of my followers rely on me for this same type of guidance.

Let’s chat about LovelySkin.com, a dermatologist-owned online destination for advanced skin care needs. The beauty of the site is its vast offering of high quality products…products that are typically made available only through expensive spas and dermatologist or cosmetic surgeons’ offices.

Dr. Schlessinger

The other feature that makes LovelySkin.com unique is the hands-on involvement of founder and CEO Dr. Joel Schlessinger, M.D. – he personally selects the products that are sold on the site. Dr. Schlessinger and his team respond daily to customer inquiries and assist customers in choosing the best products to suit their skin care concerns. This is the piece of the puzzle that really helps to demystify the online buying experience and bridge the gap that we sometimes feel when purchasing skin care online.

The LovelySkin.com team and help you determine if your skin needs a boost of collagen or a dose of antioxidants.

In addition to being able to search products by “brand” and “area of body”, you can also search by “skin concern”… I immediately got to clicking on ‘hyperpigmentation” – my number one skin care concern – and found a mountain of products with reviews and detailed usage information. Bulls-eye!

Over the next few months I’ll be trying a few products from LovelySkin.com — like NeoStrata Skin Perfecting Peel (it’s supposed to work wonders for hyperpigmentation) and Tria Skin Perfecting Blue Light (for managing my temperamental adult acne). I’ll keep you posted on all.

In the meantime, check out LovelySkin.com. Oh, and they have a blog: here! The “Trend Testers” column is a must…learn to fashion a sock bun, braided headband, and more!

Acne can be devastating. Leaving both physical and emotional scars. How often do you evaluate your skin care routine? I mean, really critically analyze the needs of your skin against the efficacy of your products. Perhaps the serum you’re using is great for managing acne, but that was five years ago and suddenly you’ve noticed tiny fine lines on your forehead. Or, perhaps your usual daily moisturizer feels great and applies well, but when stacked against current technology and advanced delivery systems, you realize that in addition to increasing hydration, maybe there are creams on the market that also eradicate wrinkles, fight hyperpigmentation, and leave a luminous finish.

I say all of this to say: Skin beyond the age of 20ish regularly goes through a laundry list of changes. It’s up to you to make sure that the products you apply topically are the cream (pun intended) of the crop and best suited for skin’s changing needs.

Does your skin suffer from diminished vitality? Is it not as plump, smooth, and supple as it used to be? In just four weeks, ANEW Genics Treatment Cream (patented with YouthGenTM Technology – inspired by genetic research on human longevity) is a fairly recent skin care breakthrough that promises to do a Cher (“turn back time”) in as little as four weeks. By boosting specific skin proteins, ANEW Genics Treatment Cream stimulates skin’s Youth Gene and triggers younger acting skin. Momma ThisThatBeauty has been enjoying the benefits ever since I gave her a jar about a month ago. Recently, I could not help but marvel over mom’s much improved 58-year old skin…Isn’t she pretty?!

Most women first reach for an eye cream somewhere around early 20’s…usually due to the effects of dryness, puffiness, or dark circles. However, as skin matures, the prevention of fine lines, wrinkles and creasing is a primary concern. Newly launched, SK-II Skin Signature Eye Cream smooths the early signs of aging at the corners of eyes and underneath.

The signature complex, a proprietary blend of Pitera™, Oli-Vityl (anti-oxidant protection), Signaline, and concentrated levels of Niacinamide, work in concert to reduce dull appearance, increase hydration, and firm the look of crepe-y skin. SK-II Skin Signature Eye Cream is serious treatment for eyes and an appropriate next step option for those of us in search of an eye cream that does more…much more! (ME!!)

It all sounds so sci-fi…A renewable energy project, turned anti-aging discovery is the real life true story inception of Algenist. Picture it: A team of San Francisco based biotechnology scientists were hard at work developing microalgae-based renewable energy solutions when they uncovered “alguronic acid”, a powerful compound connected to cell regeneration. When tested in clinical trials, younger-looking resulted…in as little as 10 days. Yes, 10 days! Now, who doesn’t have 10 days to put the claim to the test?

Ladies, start your engines…I mean, er, start your infrared LED light. Sure, topicals are effective…but why not work deeper? LightStim helps create collagen (the secret to plump, line-free skin) and improve skin’s elasticity by emitting pain-free amber and red infrared LED light. The wavelengths energize skin’s youth cells and promote radiant, brilliant complexion. The handheld, at-home device is a must add to your routine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Give your skin the attention it deserves. Take a step back. Look in the mirror. Survey your skin. Now, survey your medicine cabinet? Are you well-equipped to handle the skin care challenges before you? If not, re-read this blog post and compile your shopping list. Thank me later!

NARS Flagship Boutique
413 Bleecker Street
646 459 2323

Plainly put — If you’ve never been, you simply must go. Immerse yourself in all that is pigmented, glossy, and bright. From perfect reds (hey, Dragon Girl) to that iconic haughty naughty blush that fellow editors cannot seem to get enough of — the sleek, aesthetically pleasing West Village boutique is a beauty bucket-list must.

During Fashion Week I got my fill. If you go, ask for Janice (@NARSjanice — she’s sort of major, trust me!). During a fun evening of swatching shades and sampling products, I fell all sorts of in love with “Torrid” — my blush crush du jour — but NARS describes it as a warm coral with golden shimmer. When it comes to blush, peach tones are generally my thing…so it’s not surprising that I was drawn to “Torrid”, but here’s the kicker: golden shimmer. Uhm, I don’t really like shimmer on my cheeks. I don’t have particularly large pores but, still, shimmer and cheeks rarely end well. Well, “Torrid” breaks the mold. The matte texture balanced with micronized, finely milled shimmer gives a soft, healthful glow. Kudos to Janice for directing me to this stunning shade. I wear it and feel oh so pretty. Now go get your pretty!

Need more NARS inspiration: Well, Lianne at The Makeup Girl highly recommends NARS’ new tinted moisturizer. Danielle at The Style and Beauty Doctor breaks down the best NARS blush for all beauties from light to dark. And, My dear Belle Belle Beauty shares her fav NARS lippies and a cheerful pink blush.

. . . something for everyone!
