I love the ease of a lip gloss but the finish of a lipstick, so, I was ecstatic when the liquid lipstick trend emerged. Typically most liquid lipsticks are applied by a wand, and have full coverage.  In this post, I will talk about three of my favorite formulas and the differences between them. If you are looking for a long wearing, full coverage lip color, then you must give one of these lip colors a try!

Hourglass Opaque Liquid Lipstick

I know Hourglass was not the first company ever to do liquid lipsticks, but they were the first ones on my radar. I heard tons of buzz surrounding the formula, and had to see what all the fuss was about. The first shade I purchased was Canvas, a neutral rose, I immediately loved the creamy velvety finish. It dries down to a very matte finish, so, exfoliated and hydrated lips are a must prior to application. The applicator is a small doe foot/sponge tip and bends easily, making application is a breeze. I reach for Hourglass Opaque Liquid Lipstick regularly — it would definitely be my top pick for a liquid lipstick. $28

Pros: Easy applicator, creamy texture, beautiful color range, comfortable on the lips.

Cons: Lips must be well hydrated and exfoliated before applying.

 Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream

 bite beauty cashmere lip creams

There is no doubt that Bite Beauty knows lip products – it’s the only type of products that they make! These Cashmere lip creams launched a few years ago and immediately piqued my interest. With the name “cashmere” in the title, I assumed the formula would be velvety and smooth, which it is, but there is definitely a bit more drag or pull with these lip creams. Out of all three mentioned in this post, this is the driest so adding a lip balm throughout the day will be a must. The applicator is a long sponge tip which makes it great for lining around the edge of the lip to get a more precise line, but it can be a bit stiff when using on the rest of the lip. The colors and pigmentation are the most intense I’ve ever tried, so there is absolutely no worry about these coming off. Those looking for the longest wearing lipstick that will make it all day,  Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream is the one for you. $28

Pros: Super long wearing, beautiful color assortment, rich pigmentation, great ingredients.

Cons: Difficult applicator, can drag or pull when applying, lips may need additional moisture throughout the day.

Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color

These are some of the newest liquid lip colors to hit the market, and while they have many of the same qualities as a traditional liquid lipstick, the formula is just a tad different. Many liquid lipsticks have that prominent matte finish/feel immediately, but the Laura Mercier Paint Washes have a demi-matte finish with a lot more slip and emolliency. The applicator is a standard sponge/doe foot, yet extremely thin and narrow so it aids in making sure the application is precise, which is helpful since the formula is wetter than a traditional matte formula. The pigmentation is very saturated so it will most definitely stain the lips and last all day until you remove it with either an oil cleanser or makeup remover. The color range is beautiful and there are some gorgeous nude shades along with bright shades to appeal to all preferences. I would definitely recommend Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color for someone that wants the longevity of a matte formula but with a creamy feel.

Pros: Beautiful shade selection, more emollient feel on the lips, super saturated color

Cons: Wetter formula which makes it a bit challenging to apply.

I love a glowy, fresh complexion as much as the next gal, but there is a fine line between dewy and oily. And that fine line is called powder.  The right powder can enhance a foundation’s finish and allow skin to still glow, and the wrong powder can just be downright awful. I have tried a TON over the years and can say that I have successfully found 4 setting powders for oily skin that I love. Typically I don’t apply them over my entire face, just down my t-zone and they help to give me a gorgeous natural matte, or even a natural velvet-y finish while still allowing the properties of my foundation to show through.

La Mer The Powder

La Mer The Powder

At first sight, I did not think this was going to keep me very matte since there is a finely milled shimmer that runs through the entire powder. Well joke is on me, because not only does it keep me matte, it does that rare thing of making me look radiant without any shine. I’ve read reviews that state it makes pores look like they have disappeared, and I can’t agree more. I use the powder puff it comes with and press and roll it in my skin after my foundation and it gives the most beautiful airbrushed finish. It can add just a touch of color to my face, so I often make sure I use this with a lighter foundation to counteract any oxidizing that may occur. Available at Nordstrom for $65.00.

By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder

by terry hydra powder

This is the equivalent of one of my heavy duty mattifying primers – it’s THAT good. But what is so exceptional and unique about this product is that it’s suitable for any skin type, it’s not just a setting powder for oily skin. Designed to be a powder that conceals, corrects and protects the skin, it gives an invisible matte finish while helping to correct imperfections. And when I tell you I can get a full 12 hours of wear out of this powder, I am not kidding. It is truly my mattifying miracle. Available at SpaceNK for $60.00.

Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder

Laura Mercier Universal Invisible Loose SEtting Powder

This was the first loose powder I ever fell in love with after one use. Laura Mercier is the master of the flawless face and this invisible loose setting powder is a tribute to that. Suitable for any skin tone from fair to dark, this delicate yet effective loose powder helps to give a smooth matte finish to the skin. And utilizing Laura’s recommended ‘press and roll’ method when applying makes all the difference. Simply dab the powder puff lightly into the powder and then press the powder onto the face and roll it into the skin. While I have tried using it with a large powder brush, I find this to be the most effective way to apply. Available at Sephora for  $37.00.

Laura Mercier Invisible Pressed Setting Powder

Laura Mercier Invisible Pressed Powder

While I do prefer a loose powder for setting my makeup, it is quite impractical to carry around. I have tried blotting sheets and various pressed powders, but this pressed version of Laura Mercier’s iconic Invisible Powder is my all-time favorite. It immediately takes away any shine without adding additional product to the skin or altering the color of my makeup. It comes with a mini powder puff in a compartment underneath the powder so a quick press and roll throughout my t-zone helps to immediately mattify and remove any shine. Available at Sephora for $34.00.

Never is it more important to have great looking skin than in the summer. Bathing suits, sundresses, denim cut-offs – all of these look better with healthy, glowing skin. No scaly, dry or ashy limbs need apply. Typically I begin getting my body summer ready a month or two before, but trust me there are so many great products out there that even if you only have one day, you can give  skin a radiant boost.

laura mercier body scrub in creme bruleeExfoliating my face is one of my favorite things to do, so you can imagine the enjoyment I get out of exfoliating my body. In the winter it is necessary, but in the summer it is MANDATORY. It never looks good to be sporting dry, scaly skin with an adorable sun dress. Or ashy legs with cut-offs. Not ok. I find that exfoliating my body regularly helps with uneven pigmentation that I have lingering from those days at the beach. My current favorite is the Laura Mercier Body Scrub in Crème Brulee. It has a thick, honey-like texture and as you begin to scrub it heats up a bit and then turns into a slight liquid that rinses off easily. Fresh’s Brown Sugar Body Polish is also another favorite because the oils in the scrub linger on my skin long after the shower making the need for moisturizer sometimes not necessary (even though I can’t help myself and have to apply one). Both are available at Sephora and retail for $50.00 and $65.00.

Body Firming/Cellulite firming Gel

sisley cellulinovThere are spanx in the winter, but in the summer it’s harder to hide any type of loose skin. For those beach days, something to help give the illusion of a smoother appearance is always a good idea. Firming gels and cellulite creams are the best bet when trying to firm up the tummy or thigh areas. Sisley has a fantastic one called Cellulinov Intensive Anti-Cellulite Treatement, that helps to tighten any areas of concern without feeling too sticky and uncomfortable on the skin. I typically use it a week or two before I plan on heading to the beach to prepare the skin, and then again the morning of to give a slightly smoother appearance. Clarins also makes fantastic body care products for helping with firmness and body contouring.  The Anti-Eau Body Contour Treatment Oil and the Body Lift Cellulite Control Treatment are two of the most popular products from the line that target sagging skin, cellulite and help to contour the body. The only caveat I will say with any of these sorts of treatments is that they are not permanent fixes and the skin often will go back to it’s prior appearance once use is discontinued. For me, I often use primarily these types of products in the summer and then give myself a break in the winter. The Sisley Cellulinov Intensive Anti-Cellulite Treatment retails for $242 and is available at Nordstrom. Clarins Anti-Eau Body Contour Treatment Oil and the Body Lift Cellulite Control retail for $57 and $69 and are available at Nordstrom.com.

Body Lotion

H20+ Sea Moss Replenishing Lotion

After exfoliating and treating the body, applying lotion is the next step, a no brainer in the winter , but sometimes can feel too heavy in the summer. I have personally been loving the H20+ Sea Moss Replenishing Body Lotion, because it feels refreshing and cooling and is easy to apply by just spraying it on and rubbing it in. Even though it is very light and water-like, it still gives a great hydration and soothes the skin. In addition to having a lightweight spray formula for the morning, I love an exfoliating body cream for the evening. I typically look for something with an acid to help speed up cell turnover, and leave the rest of my body as glowing as my face. Derma Doctor KP Duty Lotion is a great option because it contains glycolic acid to help slough off those dead skin cells. H20+ Sea Moss Replenishing Body Lotion is available at H20+ and retails for $20.00, and Derma Doctor is available at Sephora and retails for $38.00.

neutrogena ultra sheer sunblock

Summer. Sunscreen. One cannot exist without the other. But I am extremely picky when I have to wear it during the day because I don’t want it to feel like I am at the beach. And with the invention of all the spray sunscreens over the past few years, it has made it easier to wear sunscreen on the body every day. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist has been my go-to for years simply because of how nice it feels on the skin, and I don’t end up feeling sticky or tacky after a few hours. And of course, it is just as effective for those days when I’m actually at the beach.  Supergoop Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist is another great choice for wearing both in everyday activities and at the beach. Neutrogena is available at Soap.com and retails for $8.99. Supergoop is available at Sephora  and retails for $19.00.

Fragrance/Body Mists

Sisley eau tropicale

This is the last step of the summer skin process. After you have exfoliated, added a contouring oil/gel, applied body lotion and given yourself a good dousing of sunscreen, the fragrance is the product you add right as you are about to get dressed. Warm, musky, rich scents are de rigueur in the colder months, but come summer you want something light, fresh, and often citrus or floral based. Sisley’s eau tropicale fits this to a tee — it’s bright and sunny with notes of bergamot, violet, rose and a hint of patchouli. It’s the perfect warm weather floral that can be worn from day to night. But what is even better than a fresh new fragrance for summer is a fresh new fragrance that has skin hydrating properties! DKNY’s Be Delicious Skin Hydrating Mist is a fragrance with skin-boosting benefits that help provide instant moisturization, as well as leave skin looking smoother and more radiant. You can spritz and spritz and spritz, and actually help your skin look better. And in the summer, dehydrated skin is almost expected with all the time spent outdoors, so this is a great way to stay hydrated and smelling great at the same time. Sisley eau tropicale is available at Nordstrom and retails for $102.00. DKNY Be Delicious Skin Hydrating Mist retails for $75.00 and is available at DKNY.com.

What are some of your summer skin must haves?

As a card carry member of the oily face club, I know there’s a fine line between dewy and downright oily. And if you’re all too familiar with the dreaded midday makeup meltdown, these five tips for shine-free skin are for you. . .

TONE: Restore balance and reduce excess sebum production with a skin-soothing facial tonic or toner. La Mer Oil Absorbing Tonic is a perfect choice. Infused with algae extracts and La Mer’s signature Miracle Broth, this light facial water helps to rebalance skin and prevent embarrassing shine.

Shine Free Skin: Five Simple Steps To Control Oily Skin

Designer: Jenny Packham

Stylist: Jeanie Syfu for TRESemme

It takes a village…

Inspiration: The Jenny Packham Spring 2014 Collection is loosely influenced by the 70’s Australian cult classic, “Picnic At Hanging Rock,” a beautifully haunting story about a group of boarding school girls who are taken on a picnic to Hanging Rock, mysteriously wander off in a trance and disappear. (Sounds like Molly was involved.) To translate this into runway hair, Syfu fused bold 70’s waves with romantic texture and volume.

How To:

  1. Apply TRESemme Thermal Creations Mousse liberally and blow-dry with a Mason Pearson brush.
  2. Spray TRESemme Thermal Creations Curl Activator Spray (no jheri) on each section and curl hair with a smaller iron at nape, medium-sized barrel from the ears to crown and 1″ barrel iron on top.
  3. Once cooled, take pins out and tease hair from roots working your way down to ends to lift curls and create texture.
  4. Spray with TRESemme 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray for long-lasting volume and touchable hold.
  5. As a finishing touch, clamp a barrette above the temple to secure the style in place. Voila!

Manicurist:  Gina Edwards for Essie

Inspiration: Mystical fantasy. A 1900s Edwardian era fairytale with a 70’s feel.

How To: You’ll need four Essie colors.

  1. Apply a coat of Eternal Optimist
  2. Tone it down by applying a coat of Allure (great layering tool).
  3. Next up: glitter! A Cut Above (pink glitter) is layered under Set in Stones (silver glitter). Starting at cuticle, the glitter is lightly dabbed so that there is a trickle down effect that slowly fades away.

Makeup Artist:  Talia Shobrook for Laura Mercier

Inspiration: Combining a “flush of innocence with a hint of naughtiness,” the look is skin focused with a youthful, fresh, ethereal vibe. Glitter was again the focal point as it highlighted the model’s eyes.

How To:

  1. Prep the skin with Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, then apply Laura Mercier Creme Cheek Colour in Sunrise.
  2. Apply Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – Oil Free Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen all over the face.
  3. Conceal minor skin imperfections using Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage.
  4. Apply Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Radiance to the T-Zone.
  5. Dab lips with Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Spiced Rose and Pink Blush.
  6. Apply a thick layer of Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Sterling.
  7. Fill in your brows using Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil.
  8. Apply one swipe of Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara, keeping the lashes very subtle.

Pro Tip For Using Glitter: To pick up errant glitter, use a clean mascara wand and press it down on skin. It will pick it right up!

The natural cheek flush that comes with the crisp Fall air is always nice on a weekend getaway, somewhere in the country and perhaps with a limited amount of people around.  However, this preference stops as soon as said jaunt ends and you are faced with recreating that flush with an appropriate cheek color.  Fear not — that is why you read this blog, so you don’t have to make those frightening decisions on your own. Frankly, picking a shade of blush can be quite unnerving, you find yourself  hoping you achieve a rosy, natural glow instead of clown-like, over pigmented cheeks.   I have rounded up some great blush options for every skin tone to help you navigate your way through this beauty maze.  You. are. welcome!

For Fair Skin Tones:

Laura Mercier in Barely Pink – a delicate pink that provides a nice touch of color to the cheeks, and since this color is so pale, you can go heavy with the brush and not look like a clown.

Lorac Blush in Soul – a dusty rose shade that is a gorgeous flush for fair skin.  (bonus – this shade also works with medium skin tones as well, so go ahead and get that tan knowing your blush will still look fabulous.)

For Medium Skin Tones:

Illamasqua in Lover – a soft peach shade that will warm up the skin.  Since these blushes are extremely pigmented, use a light hand and this blush will last you forever.

NARS in Sin – a company known for their blushes, NARS offers so many shades that fit any skin tone.  Sin is a golden plum shade that wears well on medium skin tones, and can easily go with just about any eye or lip that you put with it.

For Olive Skin Tones:

Becca in Songbird – a bronzed, peach shade that will give you a beautiful glow.  Subtle shimmer will give your cheeks a radiance without dousing them in glitter.  This is also a shade that looks great on deeper skin tones as well, so feel free to take that beach vacation without needing two blushes!

Laura Mercier in Lush Nectarine – similar in the picture to Songbird, but this blush reads much more peach less bronze in real life.  Perfect for giving the cheeks a pop of color – which can add freshness to a look.

For Dark Skin Tones:

Bobbi Brown in Apricot – a radiant peach/pink shade that will brighten the complexion.  Buildable so that you can achieve any desired flush – from subtle and fresh to bright and alluring.

NARS in Taos – a desert rose with shimmer that will give the cheeks a glow.  Wear with a smoky eye as a complement or pair with a strong lip to provide balance.

Let’s tackle some Fall makeup trends, shall we?  If you need a quick refresher on exactly what all those trends are, you can see that post here.  Did you read it? No?  Ok, I’ll wait…Done?  Perfect!  Now we can carry on with the lesson.

One of the most daunting trend for women always seems to be the smoky eye, make that a brown smoky eye since we are talking 2012 Fall trends.  It strikes fear in the hearts of many makeup lovers, but it is actually one of the easiest looks to create.  I will take you step by step through the process, easing you through all the scary parts and showing you how simple this look can really be.  And the beauty of this particular Fall trend is the emphasis on one color – brown.   A color that is universally flattering on everyone, a shade almost every makeup lover owns and a palette appropriate to any social situation, work or play.  Class is now in session, let’s begin!

  1.  All smoky eye roads begin with a base to help your shadow last longer, go on more smoothly and blend easily.  I begin with Laura Mercier Eye Canvas and apply all over my entire lid stopping at the crease.   I prefer a flesh toned base so that it can also help even out the skin tone on my lid and reduce redness.
  2. Apply your preferred brown shade – cream or powder, shimmer or matte – all over the lid stopping at the crease.   I am using Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Cocoa , which has quickly become one of my favorite products for sheer ease of use and the ridiculously long staying power of the product.  Editor’s side note: blend right away because it sets quickly and does not budge.  The trick to wearing a smoky eye for any occasion is all in the shade of brown that you choose.  The deeper or more frosted the shade, the better suited for evening.  A pale, subtle brown, often with grey undertones is a great day choice for a simple wash of color all over the lid.
  3. Take your blending brush, such as this MAC 217 brush, and begin buffing the color all over the lid.  Attempting a smoky eye or any eye look for that matter is a moot point without the proper tools, namely brushes.  Once you have your arsenal of brushes, the best way to hone your skills is with good ol’ practice.  When blending out the lid color for a smoky eye, such as above, use quick 360 degree circular motions, applying enough pressure to blend the product.
  4. An extra tip to ensure the edges are smooth and blended is to take a larger blending brush like this MAC 224 brush, dip it in a matte skin-tone shade (mine is MAC Blanc) and apply over the edges both above and below to help the color seamlessly disappear into the skin.  This shade can also act as a highlight under the brow to create a more lifted appearance.  With such a dramatic smoky effect, I prefer a matte shade on the brow bone to balance the look.
  5. Once the edges have been buffed out and there is a smooth gradient-like effect to the shadow, finish smoking out the look by taking the color underneath the lashes and smudging it gently.  I prefer to apply the color with a smudge brush rather than directly from the caviar stick, as a brush allows me more control over the amount of color that is deposited.  Additionally, I run the brush slightly on the water line to intensify the effect.
  6. Full, lush lashes are the best way to finish off a smoky eye.  Whether for day or evening, I prefer to use a thick, volumizing black mascara such as Diorshow and simply adjust the amount of coats I wear for the specified occasion.  Work – 1 coat.   Happy Hour – 2 coats.  Night out on the town – 12,432 coats.

The best compliment to a smoky eye is always a soft cheek and neutral lip.  Focus on only one feature and let the rest of the makeup support that look.  I am finishing this look with Blush #10 by Armani, a soft rose and Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Bellini, a reflective coral.

Here is the finished look.  Seems simple enough, right?  I would love to see how you wear your smoky eye.

Lately, I’ve had weddings on my mind, so, when this article dropped in my mailbox I thought it was fate and I had to share. I know from participating in two summer weddings that having a strategy to keep your hair and makeup together is the difference between beautiful pictures and just an overall mess. Read on for tips and tricks from celebrity hairstylist and make-up artist Birgitte,  on how “to keep your hair and make-up looking fresh from the first pre-ceremony photo op to the reception, straight through to your dash to the honeymoon suite.

Pre-Wedding Prep

Be sure to get a trim several weeks before your wedding date. I don’t recommend trying a new haircut, or even a new stylist before your wedding. Now’s the time to stick with what you know truly works for you.

One or two weeks before your wedding, treat yourself to an at-home hair mask— especially if your hair is prone to dryness. For very dry hair, I recommend René Furterer KARITÉ intense nourishing mask. The mask will leave your hair feeling soft, full and shiny. For oily hair, rather than a mask, I recommend René Furterer CURBICIA lightness regulating shampoo with squash seed to control oil and deep clean your scalp. Be sure to massage it into your scalp. This shampoo also reduces the need for frequent shampooing.

Wash your hair the day before your wedding. Unless your hair is very oily, try to skip washing it again until AFTER your Big Day. Hair that is slightly dirty is much easier to style than very clean, silky hair. If you feel that you have a bit of oil in your hair, try a few sprays of dry shampoo. KLORANE Gentle dry shampoo with oat milk is my favorite. I recommend experimenting with a dry shampoo several weeks before your wedding—but definitely not ON your wedding day.

Check out magazines for a bridal look that will suit your face and personal style.

Keep in mind that if you don’t have the same hair texture and length as the model or actress in the photo, your hair won’t look the same. Also, as you’ll want your hair to look gorgeous ALL day long, select a style that will be both flattering and will last the day. Hair left down can be beautiful, but it’s not always a practical or durable choice. Any variation on a glam updo will not only look wedding-worthy but will also feel cooler on a hot day.

Consult your stylist for styling products to help hair hold up in a heat wave.

To make sure that your hair won’t wilt, tap into your hairstylist’s vast knowledge to select the best products for your hair type and the bridal look you want. Be sure to experiment a few weeks before your wedding. Volumizing sprays such as René Furterer VOLUMEA volumizing conditioning spray can keep hair from going limp—a must if you’re adding height at the crown or overall body. Whether you wear your hair up or down, a gentle, non-sticky hairspray is always an anti-humidity essential. René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY leaves lasting hold and a satin finish. You’ll want to know exactly what works and what doesn’t—long before your special day arrives.

Begin priming your skin a week and a half before you walk down the aisle.

Try to get enough sleep in the weeks leading up to your big day. Yes, this will be challenging, but it is my number-one tip forlooking your best as a bride.

Depending on your skin type, give yourself an at-home glycolic acid facial peel

like Glytone Mini Peel Gel and/or use a mud mask a week and a half before your wedding. A peel will bring out normal-to-dry and combination skin’s natural glow while a mud mask will draw our dirt and impurities from oily skin. If you choose a glycolic product, take extra care to avoid the sun before your wedding and always wear sunscreen.

Treat your skin with a little extra TLC before heading to the altar. Remember to use toner, eye cream, night cream plus a luxurious body cream regularly. For the morning of the Big Day, I recommend using Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream before applying eye make-up as it is gentle and hypoallergenic.

For calming skin care on your wedding day, start with KLORANE Smoothing and relaxing patches with cornflower to refresh and brighten eyes as well as counteract any under-eye puffiness. Follow with an all-over mist of Avène Thermal Spring Water and a light moisturizer to give your complexion a fresh glow.

Practice your make-up several times before your wedding day to avoid stress.

Choose a creamy foundation stick to match your skin tone. The perfect shade will go on like a sheer moisturizer. Apply with fingers on all blemishes and discoloration, dotting around the nose, under and over eyelids and on the chin and forehead. If you need a little more coverage, mask imperfections with Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. Carefully blend with fingertips for a dewy finish.

Check your face from side to side for any streaks and creases and ask a bridesmaid for a second opinion. Using a small powder brush, set foundation with a translucent powder. I like Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder in Universal. It is very light and really does the trick. Finally, select a powder blush with golden highlights to give your skin a healthy and natural-looking glow.

You want your eye make-up to look natural and stand up to a sultry day. Use a blending brush or cotton swab to blend a shimmery (not glittery!) pinkish-beige shade such as  MAC Eye Shadow in Gleam or a light brown shadow all over the lid. For smudge-proof eyeliner, dip an angled brush with stiff bristles into a brown shadow and carefully line both the upper and lower lash lines. Last, gently curl your lashes and then apply waterproof mascara—a bride’s best friend—on top and bottom lashes.

Go for a lip color that is as light and neutral as possible. Begin by using a lip liner, which most closely matches the natural color of your lips, applying it all over lips or just along the edges. I recommend MAC Lip Pencil in Nymphette for brides, followed by a sheer pink or beige gloss all over lips for a natural look.

Don’t forget to pack beauty essentials such as lip gloss and liner, a powder compact and eyeliner in your bridal clutch. You’ll want to touch up your make-up before posing for pictures and walking down the aisle to wedded bliss.

This post is inspired by the barometer. In case you haven’t noticed — Spring has sprung and Summer’s just ’round the corner. Hopefully you’ve been reading ThisThatBeauty all Fall/ Winter and have been putting in work with respect to your skin care routine. For if you have, you will embrace my upcoming recommendation. But if you have been bad little ThisThatBeauty bellas and have not taken my sage skin care advice all Fall/ Winter, well….you’re gonna go into a state of panic over this next sentence.

It is time to ditch your beloved moderate to full coverage foundation & lighten up with a tinted moisturizer.

Unless you want your face to melt clear off of your face, I beg you to set aside the full coverage foundation for the next few months…

Summer is the time of year to show a little skin…skin on your arms, legs, midriff (preferably, at the beach – please), and face. When I think of tinted moisturizers I generally think of them as a go-to products for individuals with near perfect skin. If you’re anything like me (and most women), your skin is not perfect…and that’s ok. While its never too late to start a proper skin care regimen to address your skin care issues, at this point I encourage you to embrace the skin you’re in and tone down your makeup with a tinted moisturizer.

For those of you with slight uneven skin-tone and minor discoloration, — a tinted moisturizer will bump up your complexion and give the appearance of bare beautiful skin. For those of you dealing with more severe skin conditions like acne and hyperpigmentation — I still recommend a tinted moisturizer. While it will not give the appearance of perfect skin, like with a heavier foundation, it will clean up the canvas, calm the skin, and cancel out redness and blotchiness. Your skin will feel light and refreshed without a heavy coating of foundation competing with 80 degree days. As someone who’s been there with troubled skin, believe me when I tell you that at some point you have to (as the old folks say) “let go and let God”. It is simply too hot and too humid to mess around with heavy foundation during the summer. Continue to focus on your morning/evening skin care routine and your skin’s condition will improve over time. But in the meantime, especially for the warm summer months, strip down your foundation just a bit and give a tinted moisturizer a try.

Do you have a favorite tinted moisturizer in your current makeup arsenal? Well you know I wouldn’t put you through this whole soap box soliloquy on tinted moisturizer without offering up a few of my favs. Yep, ThisThatBeauty’s got your back:

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++ I mean. .  . dang, NARS! Why didn’t you just call it “best-skin-of-your-life-in-a-tube”?…because that’s exactly what this lightweight skin perfector delivers! Available in nine exquisite shades ranging from Finland (Lightest with a neutral balance of pink and yellow undertones) to Polynesia (Dark with warm chocolate undertones), not only does Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer perfect the complexion with just a few drops, it also delivers skin-enhancing antioxidants and powerful full spectrum sun protection. And while I advise the use of a separate SPF underneath your makeup, Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer packs a really nice bonus SPF of 30 PA+++. After application my skin appears more smooth & subtlety illuminated. This has become my summer staple!

BECCA Luminous Skin Colour Sheer Colour Makeup SPF20 is another ThisThatBeauty fav. You all know that I love my BECCA Compact Concealer to pieces, but come Memorial Day I switch over to a lightweight formula. In addition to offering sun protection, this multitasking tinted moisturizer contains antioxidant vitamins A, B, D, and E to aid tissue repair, increase collagen renewal and hydration, and protect against free radical damage. The soothing soothing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic ingredients in the formula make BECCA Luminous Skin Colour Sheer Colour Makeup SPF 20 a great choice for individuals with sensitive skin.

CoverFx Skin Tint FX Moisturizing Treatment and Tint is an oil-free, paraben-free, and water resistant formula with skin repairing ingredients and anti-aging technology. The shades available range from C Light to M Deep…that’s like a “light olive” to a “warm walnut”. SkinTint FX’s formula is light and silky. The finish is a natural sun-kissed glow. SkinTint FX contains SPF 30 and multi-vitamin antioxidants A and E. It is also supercharged with emollients, such as ceramide 2, vitamin F and emollients derived from Mediterranean olives. This one’s packed with goodness!

La Mer Fluid Tint SPF 18 ($65) is a water based formula that adds a touch of color for a smooth, even finish. Enriched with gemstones, Fluid Tint absorbs light energy, transforming it into beneficial green light to enhance anti-oxidant activity. Photonic spheres redirect and diffuse light. Light-reactive seaweeds bind moisture to the skin, helping to prevent dehydration. La Mer Fluid Tint SPF 18 comes in three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark.

per-fekt skin perfection gel is a skin perfector that instantly enhances the appearance of the skin offering an easy breezy summertime appropriate alternative to traditional foundation, primer, color corrector and powder. This powerhouse gel-mousse instantly enhances skin tone, helps to maintain hydration, and significantly reduces the appearance of redness and discoloration. It also helps to diminish the appearance of enlarged pores, pesky fine lines and embarrassing ill-placed shine. per-fekt comes in five shades: Translucent (colorless for all skin tones), Luminous (very light neutral/fair skin tones), Radiant (medium beige/fair to medium skin tones), Rich (warm tan/tanned skin), Decadent (deep tan/ doubles as a bronzer for lighter skin tones).

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint allows you to hydrate, cover, and protect all in one formula. This lightweight tint leaves skin beautifully hydrated, with sheer even toned coverage while shielding skin from environmental damage. Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint contains Seve Marine, a green algae that replenishes dehydrated skin, leaving it smooth and supple. The formula is packed with free-radical fighting antioxidants of Kiwi Extract and vitamin E, Licorice Root Extract to calm redness and inflammation, and Menthol to provide a cooling effect. The nourishing formula also includes Youngblood’s signature mineral blend of Rhodolite, Zincite, Hematite and Malachite, which help protect skin cells and tissue.

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint comes in four skin-perfecting shades: Natural, a bare shade for Light to Medium skin; Warm, a rich brown for Medium skin tones; Tan, a toasty shade for Medium skin; and Golden Sun, a soft, shimmering golden shade for illuminating Medium to Deep skin tones. Golden Sun is my personal fav for highlighting the skin! Visit Youngblood at Henri Bendel NYC.

POP Beauty No Show Correct & Protect Tint is a weightless SPF 30 tint gel that evens out uneven tone and discoloration. The formula is oil-free, water based, and enriched with Vitamins C and E. Ladies, it’s mid-March and the perfect time to start thinking about Spring makeup trends and how we will incorporate the best of what’s NOW into our current makeup routine.  As a certified Beauty Girl, I live for the changing of seasons and updating my makeup arsenal to reflect the newest trends.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Cheri Botiz, Nordstrom National Beauty & Fragrance Director to discuss the makeup trends in store for Spring. Rick DiCecca (Estée Lauder Global Makeup Stylist), Ricky Wilson (Dior Celebrity Makeup Artist), Deborah Lippmann (Celebrity Manicurist and Founder of Deborah Lippmann), and Matin (Laura Mercier Celebrity Makeup Artist) also joined the conversation and offered four top beauty looks as the temperature heats up! How will you incorporate these looks?

1) Iridescent Eyes –

2) Bright Scents –

3) Bright Lips – (a ThisThatBeauty fave, obviously;))

4) Bold Nails –

Want to get super involved with Nordstrom’s Spring Beauty trends but feel challenged on where to start? Well Nordtrom’s complimentary Beauty Stylist service can help! Have you noticed the abundance of Argan Oil products currently on the market?

The popular ingredient is produced from the kernels of the argan tree and is endemic to Morocco. Argan oil is said to possess both medicinal and cosmetic properties because it is rich in Vitamin E, Omega-6, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants and has great restorative properties.

Argan oil has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, strengthen elasticity and improve skin’s overall health and vitality. Extremely rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants, Argan oil has also been shown to fight free radicals, help reduce inflammation, minimize the appearance of wrinkles and assist in protecting the skin from environmental factors.

Whether browsing Sephora or your local Target, there’s no shortage of skin care, hair care, and cosmetic products containing Argan oil.

By now savvy makeup wearers have embraced the concept of primer, the key to flawless foundation application. Prep your skin with Josie Maran Argan Primer Mist. The stem-cell infused primer is all natural and somewhat revolutionary in its delivery system. The Argan Primer Mist, yes I said “mist”, sprays evenly onto the skin to naturally firm, nourish, and prep skin for foundation. The mist also works as a setting spray after makeup has been applied. ThisThatBeauty loves double duty beauty products!

Creme of Nature recently announced the launch of their Argan oil collection, the first line of mass retail products with Argan oil for multicultural hair. Creme of Nature with Argan oil boasts an innovative line of five, moisture-enriched shine products infused with Certified Organic Argan oil. The new products include:

  • Creme of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment Pack that strengthens, deeply infuses moisture, and prevents hair breakage
  • Creme of Nature Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Polisher to instantly impart radiant shine, seal in moisture, control frizz and leave hair silky smooth

  • Creme of Nature Argan Oil Gloss & Shine Mist, a weightless mist that instantly shines, conditions and controls frizz and fly-aways

Of the newly launched mass market hair care line, Shawn Tollerson, VP of Marketing says this:

“We are very excited to bring Creme of Nature with Argan oil with its shine and nutrient rich benefits to the multicultural marketplace. Finally, this new line offers Argan oil which is typically found in prestige products to the masses at an affordable price.”

If your hair is damaged, chemically-treated or excessively-curly, the Crème of Nature Argan Oil collection provides the hydration and radiant shine your hair deserves!

Kahina Giving Beauty is an organic skincare line that incorporates 100% organic Argan oil sourced from the women’s cooperatives of Morocco. Kahina products are formulated with organic ingredients whenever possible then manufactured in an eco-friendly, carbon neutral facility and packaged in recycled and recyclable materials. There are four products in the core line –

  • Facial Cleanser
  • Serum
  • Facial Lotion
  • 100% Organic Argan Oil
  • Eye Cream – A ThisThatBeauty fave! (more info below)
  • Travel Basics kit – Includes mini versions of the Argan oil, cleanser and lotion

While the entire line is impressive, in my opinion the hero product of the line is the eye cream. Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Cream is a high performance eye cream that is formulated to firm and nourish the delicate eye contour area.

The cream contains 79% organic content and is richly textured with essential ingredients like natural botanicals, collagen-boosting peptides and soothing aloe vera leaf juice. Additionally, Kahina Eye Cream contains:

  • Organic White and Green Tea Extracts – Studies have shown these anti-oxidant substances restore and build skin’s immune response at the cellular level, protecting skin from sun damage, wrinkling and discoloration.
  • Sea Fennel Extract – Sourced from the North Atlantic rocky coastal cliffs, this hydrating and vitamin rich ingredient calms and protects skin with powerful antiseptic properties.
  • Organic Acerola Extract – This potent, natural source of vitamin C inhibits melanin production, effectively brightening the skin and preventing mottling.
  • Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract – This legendary Siberian herb has been linked with longevity and shown to reduce fat deposits, stimulate and boost cell metabolism.
  • Maritime Pine Extract – This Mediterranean tree’s bark provides a natural defense system, protecting the skin from oxidative damage, fighting the degenerative process of aging and stimulating the biosynthesis and regenerative processes of skin tissue.
  • Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract – This strain of yeast increases cellular oxygen consumption and energizes skin. Combined with Rhodiola Root Extract, it reduces the appearance of puffiness, strengthens and firms the skin and improves microcirculation.

Kahina’s social entrepreneur founder, Katharine L’Heureux, donates 25% of the profits back to the women of the Moroccan co-op who work to provide the Argan oil for Kahina.

After the successful launch of Bois D’Orange Reinvigorating Fresh Fragrant Water, Roger & Gallet have recently added a new product to its portfolio – Huile Sublime. If double duty beauty products float your boat, read on….This lightly textured dry oil is a multi-tasking product which is suitable for use on the face, body and in the hair. The zesty blend of mandarin, orange, bitter-orange essential oils, orange blossom, jasmine and Atlas cedar is certain to invigorate the senses.

Huile Sublime is made up of six active vegetable oils, including: Argan oil, known for its nourishing properties; almond oil, to soften the skin; camellia oil, to restore suppleness; macadamia oil, a nourishing ingredient; evening-primrose oil, to protect the skin; and sesame oil. The product also incorporates antioxidant vitamin E and orange essential oils.

Arganics hair care system is designed to help repair damaged hair. The new line of hair products feature an advanced blend of Moroccan Argan oil and extra virgin olive oil. The collection officially launches in the fall and will include:
