We made it through winter, you guys! Though we are not totally beach ready yet, the temps are beginning to warm up and that means one thing – bronzer time! Nothing goes better with bright sunny weather than a healthy radiant glow. And while it’s nice to want to get that tan from the sun, it’s a lot safer if we just fake it. Here’s a look at 3 bronzers you need to try this summer.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer

Hourglass Ambient Lighting BronzerAs an avid Hourglass fan, I could not be more excited for this launch. The ambient lighting powders were a groundbreaking product that gave skin that filtered, “lit from within” look that we all covet. The new Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer gives that same effect but with a bronzy, radiant finish. It’s formulated with an innovative Photoluminescent Technology that refracts light and helps to enhance your best features. Imperfections look blurred and smoothed away and what is left is healthy gorgeous skin that looks sunkissed. While it is suitable for slight contouring or highlighting, I prefer this swept over my cheeks as my main blush choice. It has significant pigmentation but can be blended out easily if I apply too much. For those who already love the Hourglass powders, this is a definite must have in your collection. Available in two shades. (Sephora.com $50)

Guerlain Terracotta Four Seasons Bronzer

Guerlain Four Seasons Terracotta BronzerIf there is one thing Guerlain knows how to do – it’s make bronzers. Many brands struggle with creating bronzers for all skin tones, and end up putting out colors that only work for those that fall in the light-medium category. This is where Guerlain is far superior and makes bronzer shades for any and all skin tones from fair to deep. This particular Four Seasons range offers colors that would suit any and every one without looking too orange or too muddy. It imparts the perfect amount of warmth to the skin due to the addition of a pink/red shade in the compact. Never too shiny or too matte, this formula falls right in the middle with respect to shimmer and blends effortlessly on the skin. It’s a bit of a splurge, but worth every penny. Available in 4 shades. (Sephora.com $76)

Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer

Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer

While achieving that summer “glow” on the skin is the goal, for many of us with oily skin we want options that can give our faces a bit of color without any shimmer or shine. The Too Faced Milk Chocolate bronzer was an immediate favorite of mine from the first time I used it. It’s a matte texture that manages to look fresh and youthful on the skin without giving an overly powdered effect. The powder is very finely milled and has a smooth feel that translates to a soft and velvety finish to the skin. I can use this both as a contour powder or bronzer, and even after a full day of wear it never oxidizes. It is a perfect bronzer for the summer, but also remains a staple in my makeup routine in the fall and winter because of how natural it makes my skin look. Available in 3 shades. (Sephora.com $30)

Whether you are looking for a skin perfecting type bronzer, a brand with extensive shade ranges or a matte option, there is a bronzer our there for everyone.

What is your favorite bronzer at the moment?

Forget lines and wrinkles. Youthful skin is all about the glow. Healthy, radiant, lit-from-within skin is the goal. And if the only way you’re achieving the aforementioned is with your favorite Instagram filter or with a Photoshop tool, 1) Stop it right now and 2) Keep reading for tips on how to achieve your unique glow.

I wholeheartedly believe that the glow starts from within. Each day, I try to practice having an attitude of gratitude. Now, this does not mean that I’m some sort of Pollyanna, but I do believe that having a thankful and gracious attitude shows…and GLOWS!

Too much sun? No thanks!

Nothing robs your skin of its glow like overexposure to damaging UV rays. Avoiding excessive sun exposure and applying a daily slathering of broad-spectrum SPF 30 is crucial to maintaining clear, even toned, glowy skin.

Guerlain Bronzers, ThisThatBeauty

Let’s talk bronzer – your glow-getting secret weapon. And if we’re going to talk bronzer, the conversation begins and ends with Guerlain. These folks know glow! They launched Terracotta, the first bronzer, more than 30 years ago. Since that time, the iconic glow-getting franchise has grown to incorporate a variety of finishes and shades. And as a woman of color, I have to tell you – no one does bronzer for deep skin tones quite like Guerlain. What I love most about Guerlain’s bronzers is that there’s truly something for everyone. From fair to deep, there’s a bronzer to compliment your skin tone. There’s also a great deal of variety with respect to texture (natural, matte, shimmer), so you’re able to diversify exactly how you enhance your complexion. Who says there’s only one way to glow?

When creating glowy skin, my primary focus is to bring out my natural warmth. I do this with very light touches and strategic product placement. C’mon, let’s get glowing:

My personalized face chart from Guerlain
My personalized face chart from Guerlain

1. For a sun-kissed glow, I apply Terracotta Joli Teint Foundation SPF 20 All over.  It’s generally recommended to apply in sweeping motions from the center of the face outwards, but I usually start at my jaw line, and work my way inward…my personal philosophy is to start where I need the coverage most and thin out everywhere else. This is a medium coverage product so it’s opaque enough to cover minor skin imperfections.  (PS: For an added boost of radiance, prime skin with L’Or primer, a makeup base with pure gold – holy moly, skin looks beyond angelic!)

left: primer only, right: primer + foundation

2. To bring light to my skin, I apply Precious Light Rejuvenating Illuminator under my eyes, at the center of my forehead, down the center of my nose, center of my chin and a tiny bit at my cupid’s bow.

ThisThatBeauty in Guerlain

3. For the next to last step (which sculpts and warms up the skin) I apply Terracotta 4 Seasons. I prefer a classic bronzed look that’s somewhat matte. This palette is perfect because it contains a range of 4 bronzing shades to adapt to how your skin tone changes throughout the year…so all year long, this is the only bronzer palette you’ll ever need. And because the shades all vary just a touch, the palette works as a highlighting and contouring kit as well.

ThisThatBeauty in Guerlain Terracotta

4. For the final step, I use Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzer to soften the look and illuminate my skin. The compact contains 5 shimmering tones that I swirl together and apply across my forehead, cheeks and jaw line.  For a brighter flush, Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzer can be applied (in buildable layers) to the apples of the cheeks.

Before and After: Note the subtle impact that bronzer can have

For an easy everyday look, I’d add lip balm and little liner…but for the purpose of this post (and because I love a good glam session!), I have completed the look with: Guerlain’s 6-color eyeshadow palette in 10 Rue des Francs-BourgeoisMaxi Lash mascara, Khôl Me Kajal eyelinerEyebrow KitThe Lip Liner #45 and Rouge G lipstick in 06 Garance

Full and complete look

In a nutshell, the glow is the thing. I’d happily take a tiny line or wrinkle here or there…so long as my skin is happy and glowing. It starts from within, but thanks to Guerlain’s amazing range of products, enhancing your natural glow and bringing out your best you has never been easier.

I’ve never wanted to smell edible until Elixir Charnel Gourmand Coquin by Guerlain.

I’m not really a yummy fragrance kind of girl. That’s never been my scene. Even as a preteen, those bubblegum-y Bonnie Belle scents were wasted on the kid. And as an adult, my fragrance picks generally lean toward masculine choices. I’m an Oud, Musk, Sandalwood kind of gal. But, yoooo — Elixir Charnel Gourmand Coquin by Guerlain has a homie sprung! The oriental vanilla scent with dark chocolate tendencies is THE scent for Valentine’s Day. There is no other choice. Seriously. Buy this. Available at Nordstrom. $260

Guerlain Elixir Charnel Gourmand Coquin

In addition to vanilla and dark chocolate, the scent features a rich accord of rum, cacao, pepper, rose and spices. So you see, it smells edible but in a very balanced and sophisticated way. I’m hooked! I think this is a perfect treat if you’re in search of a Valentine’s Day scent (but I’m also looking forward to wearing Elixir Charnel Gourmand Coquin when it warms up…these notes are going to absolutely radiate on dewy summer skin!)

Happy Valentine’s Day, kids!! Get your LOVE on….

A great mascara can be the difference between an amazing makeup look and one that’s just simply — blah. Mascaras often promise to lengthen and thicken lashes but tend to work differently from person to person, so, we thought we’d share with you our best mascaras of the moment.    We are five strong at ThisThatBeauty (TTB) and we all have a different mascara favorite at the moment:

Cherry Blooms Brush on Fibre Eyelash Extensions

Best Mascara - Cherry Blooms Brush on Fibre Eyelash Extensions

Lately I find myself in a love/ hate relationship with mascara. I love long, feathery pitch black longer-than-long lashes…..but I absolutely despise the nightly removal process. And I don’t care how well your eye makeup remover claims to work — there’s always a little “work” involved. And after a full day of work, and then mommy duty…I just don’t have the energy to remove mascara. Cherry Blossoms Brush on Fibre Eyelash Extensions is my answer to everything. Not only does this genius little mascara create the instant effect of lush lash extensions, it also removes with just soap and water. The not-so-secret-secret to the faux lash effect is natural cellulose black fibers that adhere to the beeswax within the mascara (It’s a two-step application process, but totally worth it). This pairing creates super long lashes that appear, dare I say — fake. Sold. Love. Yassss! $59

Maybelline Great Lash  AND Palladio Clear Mascara

Best Mascara - Maybelline Great Lash

I am really boring as I rarely wear mascara – I know sad! In any case, I am really old school and swear by Maybelline Great Lash Mascara ($3.99). It never fails me. It lasts, it doesn’t cake up and doesn’t leave those ridiculous clumps below my eye when I blink.  What I happen to be in LOVE with at the moment is Palladio Clear Mascara ($5.99)  because it’s completely mistake proof, and I like how it makes my lashes a tad shiny but not overtly so. When it comes to makeup, I’m about a half a step above that 13 year old girl who’s experimenting in the bathroom on a Saturday night. So when I say it’s mistake proof I mean it. I’ve never had to backtrack and take it off and start again.

Benefit They’re Real!

Best Mascara - Benefit They're Real!

I’m completely in love with Benefit They’re Real! Mascara . It lengthens and volumizes my lashes like nothing I’ve ever tried before. It also transitions extremely well from day to night, and does not smudge or clump up. The wand has a custom-domed tip which allows you to coat every lash, and helps your eyes to really pop. After applying, it definitely looks like I’m wearing falsies, but without the fuss. $23

Guerlain Maxi-Lash

Best Mascara - Guerlain's Maxi-Lash

Guerlain’s Maxi-Lash is great mascara for dramatic, full-impact and voluminous lashes. The formula takes a little bit to thicken up, so it reaches its full potential after a few weeks of using. Since it provides such a strong and intense lash look, using a cleansing oil is how I recommend removing it. $32

Lancôme L’Extreme

Best Mascara - Lancôme L'Extreme

I am in love with this mascara as it really provides volume and length to my lashes giving my eyes that “pop!” The brush bristles are perfectly spaced to coat every lash without  unnecessary clumping.   I use the waterproof version so I can get through morning commute in wet weather and also dance all night without the “raccoon eyes.”   To remove,  I use make-up remover wipes then wash  my face with cleanser of my choice. $27.50

Urban Decay Perversion and Subversion Lash Primer

Best Mascara - Urban Decay Perversion

I never thought I would be the one to be advocating a two step mascara application process but here we are. When I first tried the Urban Decay  Perversion Mascara ($22) I was not at all impressed.  It was a bit too wet for my taste and made application without mess rather difficult. I decided to try it with the Subversion Lash Primer ($20) and voila! It was like magic. After applying the primer the mascara was easy to apply and didn’t clump or transfer.  My lashes appeared longer and fuller after just one coat.   I can also apply a second coat at the end of the day without it flaking off or clumping — a major plus when you want to take eyes from night to day.  At the end of the day, I use either the Dermalogica Precleanse or the Dolce & Gabbana Cleansing Oil to remove all makeup.

During summer months I glow, no matter what.  I have oily skin and while there are products that give me semi matte skin for a few hours when it’s sweltering, there is nothing that can keep me matte all day. Its  easier to keep a matte sculpted face when temperatures start to drop. However, I still have to do some work to find products that will not only stay matte but also won’t dry out my skin. Since we just started fall (and hopefully the start of consistently cooler weather) I thought I share the Products  I Use for a Matte Sculpted Face.

Christene Carr - Matte Sculpted Face

Face Primer

If I want matte skin, I have to start with a mattifying primer — it’s really not up for debate.  Becca Ever Matte Poreless Primer targets oil-prone areas of the face to slow down the breakthrough of oil. It is formulated without silicones, parabens and oils and can be applied under and over foundation. I apply under my foundation and wait for it to completely dry down then I apply my foundation.

My foundation collection is extensive but right now these three are in heavy rotation:

  1. Cover FX Cream Foundation –  is a rich emollient base foundation that is free of gluten, mineral oil, fragrance, parabens and talc. It offers  sheer to full coverage and works on any skin type, even sensitive.  While I use this foundation all your ’round, I especially like it during cooler months. I am shade N 100 and use N 80 and N 110 to highlight and contour.
  2. Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Cream – Discovered this over the summer and did a full review here.
  3. Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation  Stick–  Uses a transparent base with skin tone correcting pigments. I wear shades Golden Almond and Almond. The foundation is very creamy but not oily. It delivers sheer to full coverage and I love that I can just swipe it over my face and blend with fingers or a foundation brush. Available in an incredible 24 shades.

Using all three of these with the Becca primer extends the wear and I can stay matte longer.

Setting Powder

When using cream or liquid foundations, setting powder is a must.  Setting powders extends the wear and reduces the amount of product that is transferred.

  1. Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder
  2. Cover FX Matte Setting Powder in Medium
  3. NYX Mineral “Set It & Don’t Fret It” Matte Finishing Powder

All of these powders work great with a powder brush when I want a natural skin finish or i’m doing a super quick application, when I want a more matte finish I’ve been using Areo Minerale Powder Puff.  It sounds old school but the press and roll method to applying setting powder is a totally new discovery for me and I only tried it because all 3786 of my powder brushes were dirty (don’t judge me.)

Lid Primer

When I go matte, I go all the way, even my shadow.   Lid primers work to keep lids matte and also help to make shadows more vivid and long lasting. Here are my favorites:

  1. Ruby Kisses
  2. Urban Decay Primer Potion

Eye Shadow

  1. Becca Ombre Nudes Eye Palette – I love this neutral Becca palette because all the shades are matte and the pigment is fantastic. I use my finger to smudge the darkest shade into the lash line and blend upwards. I also use my finger to add the lightest shade to the browbone and inner corner of my eyes.  It takes about a minute to apply both. I love when my shadows can double as brow filler…I use the darkest shade with this brush to fill in and define my brows.

Guerlain’s  Terracotta 4 Seasons Tailor-made Bronzing Powder in Ebony is perfect multipurpose product. It is combination of 4 shades that help to highlight and sculpt my face.  It has just a hint of shimmer which is perfect to add depth to my overall matte sculpted look. I isolate the darkest shade and use it in the hollows of my cheeks to contour, while using the lightest shade as a highlighter.  I swirl a blush brush over the entire palette and use as a blush.

Fall Lipsticks - Christene Carr

With such a simple look on the face it is possible to wear just about any lip color. In this post I show four lip colors (above) that I’m loving for fall.  I still have all four in rotation but also added these:

  1. Lorac Pro Matte Lip Pencil in Ruby and Merlot
  2. Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Ultra 650
  3. Black Opal Color Splurge Luxe Matte Lipstick in  Rich Red

What products do you use to  for a matte sculpted face?

Please share in the comments.

The spring equinox has officially come and gone, signaling the official start of spring but not necessarily bringing the immediate warm weather.  But let’s look at the positive side, it gives us a little more time  to plan our spring makeup look.  Though it’s not necessary to completely revamp your beauty bag, it is fun to update the basics with some fresh new items from the current season.  Some of us may add a few more pieces than others because we just can’t help ourselves and we already admit that we are powerless over the beauty tractor beam that sucks us in with each new collection (Ok, that part was mostly about me.)  That being said, I have already compiled my shopping list of what needs to be added to my makeup bag for spring, and felt that I would share with all of you.  I know, I’m too kind.

1.  Estee Lauder Mad Men See Through Blush – If the gorgeous natural pink shade of this blush does not put you in the mood for spring, then the bright and 60’s inspired packaging is sure to.  Fun fact: the case and carton are actual replicas of designs from Estee Lauder’s 60’s era collections.  Perfect addition to an every day makeup look for creating that subtle flush on the cheeks.

2.  Jin Soon Choi Polish in Poppy Blue – One of the easiest ways to incorporate color into your beauty routine is with nail polish.  It can often be overwhelming to branch out to a bold lip or vibrant eye liner, so put that pop of color on your hands or toes.  And there is simply no better way to do so than with this bright blue.  I personally have already purchased this (and her entire spring 2013 collection for that matter….whoops) and can tell you that the wear of this polish certainly rivals the color payoff – both are amazing.

3.  Guerlain Terracotta Four Seasons Bronzer – Most of us have been hiding under layers of coats, hats and scarves for the past 4-6 months, so we are going to need a little help to fake it until we make it…..to the beach.  With the perfect gradation of 4 matte tones in each palette to help sculpt and reproduce the perfect tan all year round, this is an essential piece to add to any makeup collection.  Formulated in 6 shades to match every skin tone, swirl the colors together for an overall warmth or use each color individually to highlight and contour the face to achieve the look you want.

4.  Lancome Blush in Love in Pommettes d’ Amour – Now once your cheeks are perfectly sculpted and mimicking a recent jaunt to the south of France, a nice bright pink dusted right on the apples is the perfect piece de resistance.  Often a pop of color with subtle eyes and lips can be all you need to brighten up the face.

5.  Nars Light Reflecting Loose Powder – With each degree added to the temperature, so goes the need for powder over makeup.  April showers bring May flowers annnnnnd shiny foreheads.  But the dreaded flat matte look of years ago is no longer the challenge with such innovative products as this Nars powder.  Colorless and able to be used by any skin tone, this powder will help to set and prolong daily makeup wear, while the photochromic technology will adjust to light sources throughout the day to help achieve a flawless and smooth complexion.  Fancy.

6.  Cover FX SPF 30 Protection Primer – As the days become longer, so do our makeup demands.  The first step in a lasting face is often a primer, and the Cover FX’s new 30 protection primer helps to hydrate, smooth AND protect your face all day.   And with the added benefit of a sunscreen in the primer, this is the perfect product to take you through spring AND summer.

7.  Smashbox Love Me Palette in Admire Me – For those of us that still want to stay close to our neutral roots (raises hand), this eye palette is perfect for every day wear while the pale pink shades are a welcome change for spring from the basic beige.  Use this palette to create  a great day look with a simple wash of the paler shades and then keep with you amp up for evening by adding the deep brown and burgundy shades to the lash line for a smokier effect.

8.  Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Lipcolor  in Pink Pop – What is spring without a bright lip option – amiright???  Wear it boldly by applying directly from the tube all over the lips, or use a dabbing motion to create a more sheer wash.

9.  Jo Malone Sugar and Spice Collection – No makeup look is complete with a great fragrance, and as the seasons change it is nice to play with a new scent.  Jo Malone’s new collection of 5 sweet and delectable scents, worn alone or layered together,  are inspired by pastries and desserts, and is the perfect way to welcome spring.

What’s on your spring beauty list?

Ahh, contouring. Too much and you’ll likely to be mistaken for a contestant on RuPaul’s drag race….But, too little, and: “girl, have you put on a couple of lbs.?” But just the right amount of contour — Oh, it’s a thing of sculpted, lifted, highlighted beauty. I did a simple little video to show you how!

Now that the holidays are in full swing, and we are running around buying gifts, mailing out cards, attending luncheons/dinners/parties galore, but what we are not doing is stopping to change our makeup.  Nope.  Do not have the time – busy, busy, busy.  But how can you possibly run from a day at the office to a swanky cocktail gathering with just your pleasant but rather mundane makeup look?  You simply cannot!  A change is needed but often that change is simpler than you think.  A quick dash of liner or a daring lip can help give your look the boost needed to transition from day to night seamlessly.

Often using just one product, such as a palette that contains both eye and lip colors can be a great solution to the day to night conundrum we often face, especially during the holidays.  This Guerlain Liu Eye and Lip Calligraphy Palette is a perfect example of one that is a must have for your makeup collection.  Complete with 4 neutral eye shades and 2 bold lip colors, you will need less than 5 minutes with this palette to transform your look for any occasion.

Here is a simple day look that is reminiscent of what I look like during any given work week.   Using shade 1 and 3 together on the eye, and lining with shade 4, creates a subtle and appropriate work look.  Finish it off with a neutral cheek, like Legendary from MAC and a subtle lip such as Pure Zen from MAC, and the look is done.

To transition this look to evening using the same palette, I would choose to either amp up my eyes by darkening with shade 4 in the outer corner and on the lower lash line, or my lips by choosing one of the two bold colors in the palette.  These same principles can be applied to any makeup that you might have at home – with the idea of intensifying either the eye with a liner or dark shadow, or the lip with a bolder more rich hue to make any day look suitable for evening.  Below are the finished looks using both principles – a bold eye or bold lip.

Personally, I love them both and if the event was really a soiree, I might even be so bold as to wear both together!  To find the Guerlain palette which retails for $79, visit your nearest Sephora or Sephora.com.

La Petite Robe Noire

Paris is my kingdom… I stroll through it at will.

My light step leaves no eyes still.

My heels echo loud, my winks conquer crowds and my smiles are vows.

Hearts are broken behind me. It’s plain to see!

I have more than one trick. Breathe in my scent quick.

Trailing close, it takes hold in a bold game of hide-and-seek.

It’s a chic boy magnet: a lasting mark, a signature visible in the dark.

“The bottle is a replica of the famous L’Heure Bleue and Mitsouko fragrances. With its feminine upside-down heart shaped stopper, the curves of the bottle mimic that of the curve of women’s shoulders. An ever-so chic little black dress designed by Serge Manseau adorns the bottle, with its gracefully plunging neckline and delicate balloon sleeves.”

The Little Black Dress or LBD can be dressed up or down and there is seldom an occasion where the LBD is inappropriate. This is exactly how I feel about Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire. With top notes of bergamot and black Cherry, the fragrance starts with a hint of sweet citrus but is soon balanced with black rose and almond that is rounded out with smoked tea, the spicy, woodiness of Pachouli, Tonka Bean and Licorice. It wears exceptionally well, day or night.

Just as a little black dress fits seamlessly into any woman’s closet, so will La Petite Robe Noire fit on any woman’s vanity.

La Petite Robe Noire is available exclusively at Sephora and Sephora.com.
