Okay, it finally feels like spring.  Never mind that it snowed a day ago in the North East, today is bright and brisk with highs expected in the 60s!  Someone bring on the daisy dukes (no, I kid.)  While I am not quite ready for short shorts, I am definitely in the mood to refresh some of last year’s spring and summer fashion because the way my bank account is set up — doesn’t allow a new wardrobe every season.  Heck, I have clothes that I have been wearing since Kanye was with the other blonde. Anyhow, I asked  Mary Johnson, P&G Fabric Care Sci-Comm, for a few Tips to Refresh Last Season’s Spring and Summer Fashion and I peppered in a few of my own.  Here goes!

Tide Febreze

Mary’s Tips:

  • Create a whole new look by mixing different fabrics and textures. Try one of your fall leather pieces and mix it with a surprisingly washable summer silk like fuji silk! (I accidentally washed my silk blouse over the weekend and it wasn’t ruined! I used the Tide pods.  Can you say bye-bye dry cleaning bill?)
  • For those pieces that never quite fit just right, take them to a tailor to get hemmed and fitted to compliment your body shape. Not only will you save yourself a buck or two by not purchasing brand new garments, but these pieces will soon turn into some of your favorite staples. (I can attest to the power of customizing.  I have a sewing machine at home. Best money I ever spent.)
  • It’s all in the details! Even an added scent can give an old outfit new meaning. Try treating clothes with Downy Infusions for a new scent and added freshness. (The Downy Infusions keeps clothes smelling fantastic wash after wash.)
  • Have a lot of old t-shirts laying around? Cut them up into cute crop tops or tank tops – perfect for a trip to the pool or beach!
  • Give your spring and summer clothes that have been in storage a quick rinse with Tide Pods plus Febreze to get the fabrics rejuvenated.

My Tips

High Waisted Jeans

  • Do a clothing swap with your best girlfriends – Yes, their closet is your closet.
  • For clothes that have been sitting in closets or drawers and may have developed a musty odor, put them in the dryer, add a downy dryer sheet and turn to a low heat setting. Set to about 10 minutes. Remove and hang and you are ready to wear!
  • The 70s inspired trends that are hot right now means many  statement pieces can be found by thrifting.  Can you say high waisted wide leg pants?  Yes, those are almost always available at the local thrift shop and that is the ultimate fashion refresh.
  • Pastels and florals are always going to be hot for spring and summer, but hemlines and fits change often.  Even out the hems of all those high low dresses and tops you bought from past seasons.  If you are not inclined to doing it yourself, find a seamstress or even get it done at your dry cleaners.
  • Busted knee skinny jeans are super hot right now — what’s to stop you from DIYing the skinnies you’ve been wearing and washing all winter? N.O.T.H.I.N.G!

Clothes and fashion should be fun and there is nothing more fun than refreshing my closet. How are you refreshing your fashion this spring?

I’m reluctantly accepting that summer is over…I mean, what choice do I have? Looking at fall fashion and working on my wardrobe is a welcome distraction. Each season I try to narrow it down to just a handful of “must have” pieces that I can work into my current closet. Here  are 7 tems Under $200 to add to Your Wardrobe Now

fall fashion picks under $2001. Leopard Coat – There really is no wrong time of year to add a bit of leopard to one’s wardrobe, but it is especially perfect for the fall season. Wear this with jeans and over-the-knee boots for a casual look or dress it up with a full pleated midi skirt and ankle boots. Available at Piperlime for $159.00.

2. Classic dark leather bag – Though I think this would transition well into any season, a dark colored tote bag is a great buy for fall. I love the contrasting lining which makes it a bit more exciting than your average bag. And the bonus is that a structured tote will look good with just about any look possible, work or casual. Available at Nordstrom for $168.00.

3. Floppy Brim Fedora – I can’t decide what I like more about this hat – the color or the shape. A hat is a must here in NYC where it gets so cold in the fall/winter, but this would even be a great buy for a warmer climate. Paired with a chunky knit and boyfriend jeans or a long sleeve boho style dress, this hat has endless possibilities. And guess what? It’s only $29! Available at Zara.

4. Oxfords – Menswear has been a big trend in fashion for a few seasons, and it’s certainly not going anywhere this fall. These cute patent leather oxfords balance feminine and masculine quite well. I can see these with a great faux leather midi skirt or cropped cigarette pants. Available also in a steel grey color, they are on sale at Nordstrom for $70.

5. Pleated Midi Skirt – Summer is great for serving a lot of leg in minis and shorts. Come fall, it’s nice to lower the hemlines and explore a midi style. This one  falls right below the knee, and has a gorgeous leather inspired look to the fabric. I’m pretty sure adding this to your closet will be the smartest thing you will do this year. Pull it out 10 years later and thank yourself for buying such a classic piece. Available at Topshop for $110.

6. Chunky Knits – Cold weather and chunky knits. I’m pretty sure one cannot exist without the other. And this vest is a great way to ease into the season. Throw it on with a plaid shirt and jeans, or layer it over your favorite coat as the weather gets colder. The possibilities are endless. Available at Zara for $199.00.

7. Faux Leather – When faux leather looks this good, it’s hard to justify splurging on the real thing. Nothing is more classic for fall than wine colored anything, and these skinny faux leather looking jeans look stylish and versatile. Dress them up or dress them down, these are bound to be one of your most worn items all season. Available at Piperlime for $198.

My biggest complaint about winter (other than the cold, and the weather, I could go on…) has to be the price of the clothing.  Summer is easy with a dress and sandals, but in the colder months, there are sweaters, boots, and the worst offender…..COATS!  Everything is so expensive that one cannot possibly stay as fashionable as possible when it takes months to save up for anything.  So, I set out to give everyone a break and find 6 amazing coats under $200.  Yes, you heard right, coats for under two hundred dollars!

6 Coats under $200

(from top left to right)

1. Faux Fur Collar Black Belted Coat – I LIVE for a fur collar – it seems so decadent, so luxurious and instantly adds a bit of finesse to any outfit, am I right?  And naturally a belted version is always a plus as it adds definition to the waist which is essential when most of a winter’s wardrobe is big and bulky.  I see this worn with a dress out in the evening, or for an elegant, chic day look with a pencil skirt and turtleneck.  Available at Oasap for $144.00.

2. J. Crew Quilted Jacket – If you reside in a year round warm climate, then you may not understand the need for a puffer coat of any kind.  But as a NYC resident, I have at least 5 of them in my wardrobe as they are essential to me surviving the winter.  Sometimes however, they can be quite bulky so a fitted waist-style version is the perfect way to keep toasty without feeling like the marshmallow (wo)man.   Available at J.Crew for $158.00.

3. Romwe New Style Lapel Dark Blue Coat  – You are running late and need to throw on something to pull your outfit together but you don’t have time to think about it?  Solution – a wool, belted wrap coat in a neutral navy color.  There is not a single outfit that I can not see paired with this jacket, and while it can easily be dressed up for evening, it will probably be your most used day time coat.  Sweater dress, skinny jeans, pencil skirt, wool shorts, leather leggings – just try to find something this won’t go with — you can’t!  Available at Romwe for $69.99.

4. Romwe Faux Leather Black Coat  – There is something so edgy about leather whether real or faux, and it is nice to spice up a typical black wool coat with some faux leather accents.  Though the look is a tad more non traditional, the style is still easy enough to wear every day, even to the office.  Available at Romwe for $59.00.

5. Topshop Plaid Coat  – I kept all my coats solid colors for years until I finally took the plunge and bought a plaid version, and I never looked back.  With the coat being the pattern and statement, it is good to keep everything else neutral.  Throw on a cozy sweater and your favorite skinny jeans and you are set!  Available at Topshop for $170.00.

6. Romwe Fitted Black Cape  – When all else fails, put a cape on it – has quickly become my fall/winter motto.  I purchased a cape many years ago and was a tad hesitant that I wouldn’t get good wear out of it.  Boy was I wrong – it became a staple in my wardrobe and the easiest coat I had in my wardrobe to wear.  It can be layered over a large sweater, vest, even another coat for additional warmth – but it can’t be denied that the shape of a cape is one of the chic-est silhouettes out there.  And at this price, you can’t afford NOT to give it a go.  Available at Romwe for $90.99.

Happy Shopping!

The month of August inevitably means I start thinking about my fall wardrobe. It is about the same time that high-school girls and college-aged women start shopping to build and update their Back to School wardrobe. If Fall/ Back to School wardrobe planning is working it’s way up your to do list, let’s shop American Eagle Outfitters together.  With my Fall Wardrobe Picks from American Eagle, I’ll help alleviate the stress and guide you to perfect picks, from new scene-stealing denim, to perfectly paired jackets and drapey patterned scarves. . . I’ll show you how to pepper these items into your wardrobe so that you stay on trend and look amazing — all without breaking the bank.

Bump Up Your Basics

Instead of investing in the trendiest looks of the season, build your wardrobe around the essentials. In doing so, the mix & match factor increases considerably and your wardrobe will go much further.

My Picks: Skinny Kick Jean,  AE Safari JacketAEO Ikat Loop Scarf

Bump up the Basics
Our model, Christene

Skinny Kick Jean: Can be worn over a boot or bootie & can be tucked and cuffed (shown below) to switch up the look. Skinny Kick Jeans are available in several washes and in regular, long and extra long inseam.  Christene’s inseam is a 36 (model, much?!) and she is wearing the extra long inseam.

AE Safari Jacket: This jacket is lightweight and perfect for layering. It can be worn as the main outerwear or belted and worn under a heavier coat as it gets chilly.

AE Ikat Loop Scarf: Here’s another lightweight item that can be looped or worn loose (shown at bottom with AE Shoulder Zip Stripe Sweater).

Double Up

Look for items that can be worn more than one way. I love wearing  a button front dress, top  or cardigan both frontward and backward. If you’ve never tried it, you’re missing out on a major wardrobe expansion opportunity!

My Pick: AE Shimmer Sweatshirt and AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia

Christene is wearing AE Shimmer Sweatshirt backward
Christene is wearing AE Shimmer Sweatshirt backward

AE Shimmer Sweatshirt: I styled it both frontward and backward on Christene. For both styles I included a scarf with hints of bright color to add dimension to the outfit and add a little warmth to the neckline…it is fall after-all.

AEO Skinny Belt: For the frontward look, I added AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia to break up the look and define the waist a bit. I choose the longer skinny belt so I would have the option of wearing it in the jean’s belt loops for another look. Remember, double up.

Say Yes To Stripes

The key to making stripes work is to keep them thin and limit to above the waist. If you’re still feeling less than confident, pair a flowy scarf to help break up the stripes a bit.

My Picks: AE Shoulder Zip Stripe Sweater and AEO Ikat Loop Scarf

AEO Ikat Loop Scarf
AEO Ikat Loop Scarf pairs nicely with thin stripes.
AE Shoulder Zip Stripe Sweater
The stripe is so delicate and flattering…and see how we worked AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia into the mix!

Be Bootie-full

Fall prep is incomplete without a neutral, goes-with-everything ankle bootie. This Autumn staple works for everything from skinny jeans to bootcut denim…pencil skirts to maxi’s…and anything else you can dream up.

My PickAEO Faux Snakeskin Bootie

AEO Faux Snakeskin Bootie
I did a roll up on Christene’s jeans to show off the cuteness of her AEO Faux Snakeskin Booties

So there you have it, my top picks to help jumpstart your Fall wardrobe. All of the items included are incredibly functional and really help to expand your wardrobe options.

A Few Parting Tips

Before investing in a wardrobe update, always:

Take inventory of your current wardrobe…Decide what can transition into fall and what should go in the donation pile. From there it’s much easier to shop and fill in the blanks without feeling overwhelmed when you get to the mall.

Stick to the plan…If your Fall shopping list includes a great pair of jeans and a moto jacket, stay the course and do not allow yourself to buy anything else until you’ve purchased what you came for. While those 70% off vegan leather jeggings might seem like a bargain, if they’re not the item you specifically came to purchase, you’ll find yourself STILL in need of the items on your list–and with a lot less money to shop.

Budget accordingly…Have, at least, a mental picture of how much you want to spend. This will help curtail impulse buys and more importantly, buyer’s remorse.

Talk about a long overdue blog post. . . bad (busy, super pregnant) Blogger! I can’t believe I haven’t covered GIVE apparel meaning sooner.

I first learned of the chic, easy, lifestyle brand a few months back and I instantly fell hard for their ultra-confortable, yet (dare I repeat the word…) chic, versatile jackets.

GIVE Apparel Meaning

I first tried the Open Cardigan. . . and it was love at first wear. The girls at work couldn’t stop complimenting me and I loved it! Not only because I like getting a nice compliments here and there…but because it gave me the opportunity to tell the girls at work a bit more about GIVE…and share that not only does GIVE make these incredibly, cool jackets — but for every item purchased, GIVE provides 100 liters of clean drinking water to a child in need. Now, how often do you get to highlight a fashion do-gooder?

*Children filtering the treated water through a cotton cloth.
Children filtering the treated water through a cotton cloth.

To date GIVE has provided more than 330,000 liters of clean drinking water.

What We GIVE: we believe in the power of giving – for every item purchased we provide 100 liters of clean drinking water to children in need. GIVE donates proceeds in the equivalent of 100 liters of drinking water from every item purchased to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW). To learn more about the program visit www.csdw.org Why We GIVE: 900 million people don’t have access to clean drinking water, causing millions of children to die each year from diseases caused by unsafe drinking water. More children die from diarrheal illnesses like cholera and dysentery than from HIV/AIDS or malaria combined. Simply doing our part to help in this crisis we can help reduce deadly diseases from killing millions of children each year around the world.

Here I am, earlier this year (before my bump was visible) sporting the Open Cardigan. I practically live in the Open Cardigan. And I have to tell you, now that I am weeks away from my due date, this cozy little cardigan still fits like a dream (size XS). It hugs and hangs beautifully. I wear it with absolutely everything. In the picture below, I paired it with leather shorts, tights and engineer boots. But now that we’re wrapping up summer and the days are actually starting to feel quite fall like, I pair the Open Cardigan with sleeveless dresses, tank tops and silk pants, really….just everything!

ThisThatBeauty and GIVE Open Cardigan

I am also particularly fond of the Moto Jacket. I mean…is it not just too cool for school?

GIVE moto jacket

Again, I cannot believe I have not raved about GIVE sooner…charge it to my head and not my heart. As the collection grows, I greatly look forward to incorporating more GIVE musts into my wardrobe. The pieces are so effortless and easy to wear…you really want to wear them all the time — I know I do!

More about GIVE:

GIVE apparel meaning is a brand, made for an effortlessly chic lifestyle.

Our mission is to create apparel that seamlessly blends the casual, luxe lifestyle with effortlessly chic pieces that have meaning – we donate 100 liters of clean drinking water for every item purchased. On October 18, 2012, Bergdorf Goodman celebrated 111 Years of Extraordinary at the Plaza Hotel. I, a luckier than lucky little Beauty Gal, was invited to take in the festivities.

And here’s what I wore, via Rent The Runway.

It’s funny, I am generally not a sparkly gown kind of girl. I usually prefer less bedazzled fabrics. But the blush tone of this gown just sort of spoke to me and my brown skin. And, come on, let’s be real — it was BG’s 111th anniversary. If ever a time to sparkle, THAT WAS IT!

Thank you Rent The Runway for helping me pull together this extraordinary look. For more on BG’s 111 Gala, check out the Bergdorf Goodman blog.

Fashion is full of options but very rarely do you find one item of clothing that can be worn 15+ ways. I was recently introduced to Shawl Dawls line of convertible shawls and cover-ups, and to say I was impressed with the versatility of the pieces is an understatement.

Shawl Dawls shawls and cover ups that are one-size-fits-all. Shawls are suitable for ladies who are conservative as well as those who want to show more of their figure. Achieving each look with the convertible shawl takes only minutes. For some looks, the Dawls use a button brooch that is sold separately.

Shawl Dawls Poncho Shawl $58

Above is the Poncho Shawl that is made of light weight rayon jersey. It is perfect for warmer weather and is available in 7 colors.

Shawl Dawls Fleece Shawl $38

In case you missed it, this is one item of clothing that can be worn 15+ ways. If you do the math on the cost of fleece shawl you realize you are paying $2.50 for each look! I don’t know where you shop but that won’t even get you a tank top at Walmart. I find the fleece shawl extremely versatile and I see it being a staple in my fall wardrobe. The nature of the fabric allows mutiple pins to be used without damaging the shawl.

Would you wear this cape-let? If took five minutes and two safety pins to achieve this look.

When I removed the safety pins there was no damage to the shawl.

With this $38 shawl the possibilites are endless. I used a leather belt to help create this look. Yes, a bit on the risky side but it shows the versatility of the shawl.

Shawl Dawls has ten different shawls and cover-ups ranging in price from $38 to $98. There is a style to suit every taste. Click here to see Shawl Dawls video on how to wear the shawl.

The holidays are coming and I think I just made your shopping a lot easier. If you are still reading you might need just a little nudge to get over to the Shawl Dawls website and make a purchase, so, here it is!

Use TTB2012 at checkout to save 10% on your purchase.

Follow me on Twitter and on Instagram (ChristeneCarr) to see all the ways I wear my Shawl and other shenanigans.

A little column. . . all about my fashion & beauty faves du jour

Shouts to the homey @HeatherPark for capturing this moment backstage at Naeem Khan . . . looks like I’m deeply engrossed in tweets :)

Gryphon Candy Dots Trench

In a word, OBSESSED. What can I say? I have a soft spot for statement pieces. I love the idea of one awesome item that has the ability to totally elevate and complete one’s look. Honestly, I could be wearing a burlap sack under this trench and still command the room (that doesn’t sound all that modest…but it’s about the trench – not me!)

My fashion & beauty gal pal Danielle (The Style and Beauty Doctor), wrote a really cool blog post on the “textured sleeves” trend. Visit her blog for more “sleeve” inspiration.

I like to think I’ve got a pretty deep closet. I’ve accumulated some choice fashion finds over the years. . . a killer statement shoe here, a dope-azz tote there. Ya know. I do OK. But sometimes an invite comes across my desk. . . for let’s say — a super duper formal gala and a girl finds herself in a bit of a pickle. What to wear? Here’s where Rent The Runway saves the day.

Over the course of Fashion Week I found I relied on Rent The Runway for a few key pieces for several dinners and events. Prior to Fashion Week, I hadn’t visited RTR since I originally covered there launch back in 2009. So I was in for a real surprise to learn that in addition to easy peasy online dress selection, there’s also a showroom in Manhattan. Uhm, does RTR get any easier? And to add icing to this beautifully layered cake, RTR features some of my favorite designers like Helmut Land and Narcisso Rodriguez. …Check out my showroom pictures and dress sections.

I love the hemline of this Helmut Lang dress. Also thought it worked particularly well with my downtown-ish ankle booties.

Another Helmut Lang option: While I wasn’t totally certain that the longer line flattered my figure, I was completely smitten with the Grecian feel.
Now THIS! This simple little number from Narciso Rodriguez captured my heart right from the start.
Uhm! Can we clear time on the calender to discuss the back of this dress? I’ll wait. . .

In Narciso Rodriguez and Celine sunnies. . . en route to shows.

Rocking Narciso Rodriguez at press dinner with beauty girls Lianne & Rachael.

This multi-print Helmut Lang was so comfy. . . and perfect for attending Cocktails & Couture! [why the silly face?..who knows!]

All in all, I had a really positive experience with Rent The Runway. Major kudos for:

  • Expanded selection of downtown designers
  • Easy online order and fulfillment process
  • No brainer return system for dresses
  • Conveniently located showroom for in-person try-on’s

I highly recommend Rent The Runway for your next big affair. I have a formal gala in a couple of weeks…excuse me while I get RTR on the line!

After covering Katie Gallagher backstage at the Standard Hotel  in the Meatpacking district I had about 4 seconds to spare before walking at a maddening pace to catch the subway, so, obviously I had time to shop. I stopped at  the Humble Chic pop-up shop across from the hotel. Short on time,  I was glad  to discover that this boutique of curated artisan pieces was available online.  Humble Chic was started  by Daniella Baider Berkson in 2011 as a way to “bridge the gap between expensive, luxury boutique brands and boring mass-market chains.”

Layering is all the rage and these 3 Humble Chic bracelets make it so easy!

Daniella and the rest of the Humble Chic team “scour the market of up-and-coming designers and manufacturers to find beautiful product at the most competitive price point.  They buy limited quantities to ensure shoppers aren’t wearing the same item as the next person.”  This is a concept I can get behind.

Humble Chic Cocoon Sweater – A versatile, practical and essential piece for Fall.
Humble Chic Milly Dress. Pair with ankle booties and leather jacket to get through early fall.
Humble Chic Milly Dress Back

Visit the Humble Chic website and sign up for their emails and get $10 off your first purchase.  The same  offer is also available on their Facebook page.

Humble Chic Byzantine Leaf Necklace  (Worn over a sheer silky black top, perhaps?)

I love finding cool boutiques with reasonably priced items. Oh, before I forget, there’s free shipping on orders  of $50  or more.

Humble. Chic. Awesome!  Happy Shopping.

Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up, introduces Lace Collection — a wardrob“inspired by Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana’s use of Sicilian Lace in their runway collections.” World renowned  makeup artist, Pat McGrath, interpreted the designers’ inspiration into the makeup collection that is intensely sensual and feminine – staying true to the brand’s iconic characteristics.  The classic gold Dolce&Gabbana packaging is transformed into a glossy black lace and is complemented by perfectly bronzed skin and nude shades for lips and nails.

Fashion Bug provides the everyday woman the opportunity to “look great and spend less.” Fashion Bug stores are in 39 states and provide clothing and accessories for work, weekend and everything in between.  The Fall 2012 preview includes items that will be in stores August, September and October.

August is a transition month with bright pinks and bursting colors that are a continuation from summer. Items are casual in feel — there are lightweight dresses, tunics and graphic and printed tees that can be layered.

For September, pieces are done in muted jewel tones and other more traditional fall colors.  September is denim month for Fashion Bug and in addition to the traditional 5 pocket denim in a variety of washes and fits, there is snakeskin denim in jegging fit. Outerwear is also introduced in September and will feature a pea coat for an unbelievable $49.99 (shown in mustard but will be
available in 5 colours).

In October there is a major outerwear delivery, including a black cape coat for $79.99 (the highest priced item in this line). Heavy knit sweaters, the color blocked trend and a number of dresses and coats in ponte knit are also featured in October.

More images are featured in the gallery below and you can shop www.fashionbug.com.  I’m digging the faux wrap dress in paisley, and the outfit with the long beaded necklace, cardigan and jewel toned jegging. See anything you would wear?
