Fall Fashion

by -

I’m reluctantly accepting that summer is over…I mean, what choice do I have? Looking at fall fashion and working on my wardrobe is a welcome distraction. Each season I try to narrow it down to just a handful of “must have” pieces that I can work into my current closet. Here  are 7 tems Under $200 to add to Your Wardrobe Now

fall fashion picks under $2001. Leopard Coat – There really is no wrong time of year to add a bit of leopard to one’s wardrobe, but it is especially perfect for the fall season. Wear this with jeans and over-the-knee boots for a casual look or dress it up with a full pleated midi skirt and ankle boots. Available at Piperlime for $159.00.

2. Classic dark leather bag – Though I think this would transition well into any season, a dark colored tote bag is a great buy for fall. I love the contrasting lining which makes it a bit more exciting than your average bag. And the bonus is that a structured tote will look good with just about any look possible, work or casual. Available at Nordstrom for $168.00.

3. Floppy Brim Fedora – I can’t decide what I like more about this hat – the color or the shape. A hat is a must here in NYC where it gets so cold in the fall/winter, but this would even be a great buy for a warmer climate. Paired with a chunky knit and boyfriend jeans or a long sleeve boho style dress, this hat has endless possibilities. And guess what? It’s only $29! Available at Zara.

4. Oxfords – Menswear has been a big trend in fashion for a few seasons, and it’s certainly not going anywhere this fall. These cute patent leather oxfords balance feminine and masculine quite well. I can see these with a great faux leather midi skirt or cropped cigarette pants. Available also in a steel grey color, they are on sale at Nordstrom for $70.

5. Pleated Midi Skirt – Summer is great for serving a lot of leg in minis and shorts. Come fall, it’s nice to lower the hemlines and explore a midi style. This one  falls right below the knee, and has a gorgeous leather inspired look to the fabric. I’m pretty sure adding this to your closet will be the smartest thing you will do this year. Pull it out 10 years later and thank yourself for buying such a classic piece. Available at Topshop for $110.

6. Chunky Knits – Cold weather and chunky knits. I’m pretty sure one cannot exist without the other. And this vest is a great way to ease into the season. Throw it on with a plaid shirt and jeans, or layer it over your favorite coat as the weather gets colder. The possibilities are endless. Available at Zara for $199.00.

7. Faux Leather – When faux leather looks this good, it’s hard to justify splurging on the real thing. Nothing is more classic for fall than wine colored anything, and these skinny faux leather looking jeans look stylish and versatile. Dress them up or dress them down, these are bound to be one of your most worn items all season. Available at Piperlime for $198.

The month of August inevitably means I start thinking about my fall wardrobe. It is about the same time that high-school girls and college-aged women start shopping to build and update their Back to School wardrobe. If Fall/ Back to School wardrobe planning is working it’s way up your to do list, let’s shop American Eagle Outfitters together.  With my Fall Wardrobe Picks from American Eagle, I’ll help alleviate the stress and guide you to perfect picks, from new scene-stealing denim, to perfectly paired jackets and drapey patterned scarves. . . I’ll show you how to pepper these items into your wardrobe so that you stay on trend and look amazing — all without breaking the bank.

Bump Up Your Basics

Instead of investing in the trendiest looks of the season, build your wardrobe around the essentials. In doing so, the mix & match factor increases considerably and your wardrobe will go much further.

My Picks: Skinny Kick Jean,  AE Safari JacketAEO Ikat Loop Scarf

Bump up the Basics
Our model, Christene

Skinny Kick Jean: Can be worn over a boot or bootie & can be tucked and cuffed (shown below) to switch up the look. Skinny Kick Jeans are available in several washes and in regular, long and extra long inseam.  Christene’s inseam is a 36 (model, much?!) and she is wearing the extra long inseam.

AE Safari Jacket: This jacket is lightweight and perfect for layering. It can be worn as the main outerwear or belted and worn under a heavier coat as it gets chilly.

AE Ikat Loop Scarf: Here’s another lightweight item that can be looped or worn loose (shown at bottom with AE Shoulder Zip Stripe Sweater).

Double Up

Look for items that can be worn more than one way. I love wearing  a button front dress, top  or cardigan both frontward and backward. If you’ve never tried it, you’re missing out on a major wardrobe expansion opportunity!

My Pick: AE Shimmer Sweatshirt and AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia

AE Shimmer Sweatshirt: I styled it both frontward and backward on Christene. For both styles I included a scarf with hints of bright color to add dimension to the outfit and add a little warmth to the neckline…it is fall after-all.

AEO Skinny Belt: For the frontward look, I added AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia to break up the look and define the waist a bit. I choose the longer skinny belt so I would have the option of wearing it in the jean’s belt loops for another look. Remember, double up.

Say Yes To Stripes

The key to making stripes work is to keep them thin and limit to above the waist. If you’re still feeling less than confident, pair a flowy scarf to help break up the stripes a bit.

My Picks: AE Shoulder Zip Stripe Sweater and AEO Ikat Loop Scarf

The stripe is so delicate and flattering…and see how we worked AEO Skinny Belt in Barbie Fuchsia into the mix!

Be Bootie-full

Fall prep is incomplete without a neutral, goes-with-everything ankle bootie. This Autumn staple works for everything from skinny jeans to bootcut denim…pencil skirts to maxi’s…and anything else you can dream up.

My PickAEO Faux Snakeskin Bootie

So there you have it, my top picks to help jumpstart your Fall wardrobe. All of the items included are incredibly functional and really help to expand your wardrobe options.

A Few Parting Tips

Before investing in a wardrobe update, always:

Take inventory of your current wardrobe…Decide what can transition into fall and what should go in the donation pile. From there it’s much easier to shop and fill in the blanks without feeling overwhelmed when you get to the mall.

Stick to the plan…If your Fall shopping list includes a great pair of jeans and a moto jacket, stay the course and do not allow yourself to buy anything else until you’ve purchased what you came for. While those 70% off vegan leather jeggings might seem like a bargain, if they’re not the item you specifically came to purchase, you’ll find yourself STILL in need of the items on your list–and with a lot less money to shop.

Budget accordingly…Have, at least, a mental picture of how much you want to spend. This will help curtail impulse buys and more importantly, buyer’s remorse.

I wouldn’t be able to get through winter without leggings, tights, and hosiery. However, very rarely are these items of clothing the focal point of my outfits. When I see the many options available from Hue, I instantly envision several winning ensembles that start with what is happening below the belt. . .

Leggings

Hue has four different types of leggings: Denim, Knit, Corduroy and Fashion.

HUE Corduroy Leggings
Skinny Jeanz Legging
Pique Pencil Leggings
Fashion Leggings

Jeanz, knit and corduroy leggings, are available in a variety of silhouettes including skinny and boot cut. Corduroy leggings come in both regular and wide wale and an assortment of colors. Jeanz leggings are available in a variety of washes. All leggings have  luxuriously soft stretch that ensures a great fit for all body types.

Tights

A good pair of tights can last all season but with the many options available from Hue it would be easy to choose one everyday.

Add some excitement to your legs by choosing opaque, footless or fashion tights. Hue control top tights are great to conceal a slight belly, lift the rear-end, and smooth less than perfect thighs — allowing you to look your best every outfit.

Whatever your style, find your favorite below the belt piece by clicking  here to see all that Hue has to offer.

Nothing marries better  than makeup and fashion, they go hand in hand, often inspired by one another — Little black dress, red lipstick.  Sun dress and sandals – bronzer.  One without the other seems almost incomplete – so I was delighted when I recently attended the launch of the new Elle cosmetics primer and saw all their fall makeup looks paired with accompanying outfits.  Presented by celebrity stylist, Christina Ehrlich, all four looks were an easy blueprint on how to approach one’s fall wardrobe for a myriad of occasions.

Beginning with the rugged trend of knits and leathers with accompanying earthy makeup tones, this was the quintessential off-duty look.  Next was old world elegance in a printed fitted, sheath dress and a heavy eye look to finish off the glamour.   Season after season the military trend emerges, reinventing itself each time – here with a more paired down approach of a silky shorts jumper and leather jacket juxtaposed with a feminine makeup look of flushed cheeks, pale lips and a subtle grey eye.  The final look a classic winter white persona, playing with the different tonality of whites and paired with clean skin, lots of lashes and red lip for that punch of color.

I was most impressed by the approach that Elle cosmetics takes to helping their customers translate the trends with online pictures and face charts.  The best example of this was their holiday eye palette that came with different notecards showing how to achieve multiple looks with the different colors.

Makeup that is approachable and easy to wear is the mark of a fantastic makeup brand.  To round out their extensive makeup collection is the new primer.  Oil free and formulated with a water and silicon emulsion, this product worked into my makeup routine effortlessly.  With the texture of a lightweight lotion, it provided a second skin effect that I was able to wear with or without makeup.  Their approach to this primer followed the current trend of hybrid cosmetic products, which are bridging the gap between skincare and makeup.  With invisible tone correctors and a blend of optical effects to help blur imperfections, my skin felt soft and had a smooth, flawless look.

At a $30 price point, this is a great introductory product to begin one’s makeup collection.  Available now at Kohl’s department stores and Kohl’s.com.

As the official shoe of Summer is the sandal,  the shoe of choice for this present crisp Fall weather is the ankle bootie.  Some even make an appearance at mid calf, but there is no denying this fashionable choice for the ride into winter is the perfect transition footwear.  Accessible at so many different price points and available in a range of choices that make it wearable with just about anything in your wardrobe – your beauty buys may have to take a momentary hiatus (albeit a quick moment) to allow for some bootie indulgence.  Lucky for you, I have done some of the leg work (har, har) and pulled together a gem of a selection for your shopping pleasure.  Get your bookmarks ready, you are going to want each and every one of these.

  1. B Brian Atwood Fragola Cap Toe Booties – I have two words for these boots – oxblood and cap toe.  You. Are. Welcome.  Could these be any more on trend?  Pencil skirt and cashmere oversized sweater approved.
  2. KORS Michael Kors Chelsea Booties – The king of classic fashion and polished perfection hits a home run with this suede piece.  Can you wear these everyday?  Possibly.  Should you wear these everyday?  Definitely.  Don’t forget to peep the snake print heel detail – “hate to see you go, love to watch you walk away”.  Wear these for date night with some dark denim and sequined top or show off at the office in a knee length skirt and blazer.
  3. Rachel  Roy Gillian Platform Booties – It’s not secret I adore a pointy toe.  A pointy toe tipped with gold metal accents?  Get in my wardrobe now.  Keep it classy with a simple sheath dress or make it more edgy with leather leggings and a sharp blazer.
  4. Rebecca Minkoff Odette Wedge Booties – While I enjoy a stiletto as much as the next fashion lover, sometimes a wedge gives me a little more comfort without sacrificing the fierce.   And with an extra pointy toe and leather ankle detail, fierceness abounds in this look.  Throw on with a fitted t-neck jersey dress and statement necklace, and your weekly office to cocktails routine will thank you.
  5. Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Lace Up Wedge Booties – With all this talk of sassy cocktails and chic pencil skirts, one might wonder if there is a heeled boot fabulous enough for Sunday errands or casual Fridays?  Voila.  Here it is.  Rugged enough for some boyfriend jeans and a utility jacket, but yet still appropriate for an oversized sweater dress and thick socks.  Dressing down but not giving up.
  6. Pour La Victoire Ravel Suede Booties – If you don’t love this boot for the inky black suede and accent heel, you will love these for the price.  So affordable at under $300, your midi length skirt and silk blouse will be itching for such a pairing.
  7. Madewell The Chelsea Boot – A sister brand to J.Crew and uber-hot right now (did you see Solange Knowles on their newest catalogue?  Awe. Some.), Madewell booties are a must have to round out the downtown hipster vibe that your wardrobe is craving.  Keep hipster and carry on with some skinny jeans, a long cardigan and super huge scarf.
  8. KORS by Michael Kors Adele Flat Booties – A more refined take on a motorcycle boot, these look perfect when paired with girly dresses for that stark contrast – and then in winter top with a parka and cover your stems with tights.
  9. Sam Edelman Petty Suede Booties – Just because it is Fall does not mean light colors should be left behind, nor comfort.  These boots would make the nicest friends with a gorgeous maxi skirt and fur vest, wouldn’t you agree?  I thought you would.

Now that I have completely filled your virtual shopping cart with all necessary footwear, isn’t it time you pressed “buy” and make your closet happy?
