eye cream

Confession: I don’t sleep well. My husband works late nights and my black pug is fussy and likes to think he owns the bed. I’m also pretty sure my upstairs neighbor doubles her apartment as a bowling alley with all the noise she makes. What does this equal? Interrupted and often incomplete nights of rest. Luckily for me, I have bags and bags (and bags and bags, eek!) of tricks that I can use to help me fake it every morning. Tarte’s Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment sounded like something that would most certainly be a welcome addition to the morning routine.

Tarte Maracuja Eye TreatmentThe cream is quite rich (something I would use mostly at night) but the much touted  brightening benefits made it a struggled for me to decide whether to use it only at night or in the morning as well. I decided to give it a go in the morning because that is when I need my peepers to be their brightest and freshest. That being said, my mornings are quite enjoyable now with this addition. The first day I was a bit too generous in applying and my makeup slid right off and it was too much for under my eye. You live, you learn. The second morning, I used just the tiniest amount and voila! Perfection.

I have been using now for the past few weeks and love how it makes my under eye area look, and how concealer wears on top of it. It hydrates like no other, and while I didn’t think I had that many dry patches, clearly I did. My eye area looks smoother, softer and well rested. I don’t suffer from intense dark circles, but I can see a definite brightness when using Tarte Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment….it helps to make me look more awake.  I may not be getting the recommended 8 hours per night but at least I can make others believe I do, then nap on the weekends to catch up.

Tarte Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment is available at Sephora for $38.00.

Dermalogica Ultrasmoothing Eye Serum is a weightless 2-in-1 serum made to treat sensitive eyes with noticeable signs of aging.” Pause, I don’t yet have noticeable signs of aging but I still wanted in on this promise of goodness, and who was going to stop me? Hmmm, no one! So I jumped in with both feet.

The Promise

This powerful treatment fluid contains an advanced peptide known to encourage collagen-producing activities to help smooth fine lines and target the signs of aging around the delicate eye area. A fortifying blend of Brown and Red Algae and Golden Chamomile helps minimize puffiness, as Oat Kernel Extract helps soothe fragile skin. Cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid optimizes hydration as the exclusive UltraCalming™ Complex helps minimize sensitivity.

What I Got

As I mentioned before I do not have eye wrinkles (from my lips to the ears of father time). However, what I do have is the occasional puffiness and irritation, usually as a result of my allergies. This serum is extremely light and soothing…especially soothing if stored in the refrigerator. I got a somewhat softened look around my eye area and noticeable reduction in puffiness over time. I have used eye creams in the past that I could feel on my skin after I applied them. Dermalogica UltraSmoothing Eye Serum disappeared into the skin almost immediately. The syringe-like packaging is genius because the serum is not exposed to the elements and is not contaminated by repeatedly reaching into a jar.

Who Should Use This

If you are over 25 you should be using an eye cream, that’s just what it is. Dermalogica UltraSmoothing Eye Serum is formulated to encourage collagen production, so, obviously this is great for mature skin. However, if you have sensitive eyes, or if you’re prone to puffiness and dryness in the eye area, this will work wonders for you…if you store it in the refrigerator, as I do.

According to Annett King, Dermalogica’s Director of Global Education, the best way to apply your eye cream is with your ring finger because it offers the lightest touch. Add serum to ring finger and lightly tap eyes from the outer corner working your way to the inner corner, over the lid and back to the outer corner.  Continue this motion until serum is completely absorbed.

Dermalogica’ UltraSmoothing Eye Serum retails for $50 and is available here.

Does your pretty little face require specific skincare at different times of day? It’s a question worth pondering, particularly given the financial investment we make in our arsenal of topicals, lotions, potions, serums, and creams. Let’s face it (pun intended), keeping 30+ skin disguised as 25+ comes at a price. Isn’t it worth it to go the extra step and make sure you’re getting the absolute most out of your products?

While anti-aging, reparative ingredients (like retinol and glycolic) are highly effective at improving tone, texture, and easing the appearance of creasing, they’re best applied at bedtime, as skin goes through its regenerative process. But what about day?…what’s the best possible way to treat skin during the day?

For daylight hours, skin requires an antioxidant rich regimen designed to fight free radicals, pollution, and the photo-aging affects of the sun. SkinCeuticals AOX EYE GEL‘s triple antioxidant treatment (Phloretin: increases eastin, Vitamin C: promotes collagen production, Ferulic Acid: neutralizes free radicles) is perfectly suited for daytime use and is effective at combatting the plagueing signs of fatique. For the last month, I have been generously applying the gel-like serum under my eyes and around my brow area. The immediate benefits are increased hydration, luminous texture, and vibrant appearance. The formula penetrates easily without a sticky residue. I generally apply my CARGO under eye brightener directly over SkinCeuticals AOX EYE GEL and the product does not run, fade, or crease…a major feat! Over time, I have noticed that my eye area appears more supple and fresh. The added caffeine in the formula gives my tired, puffy eyes a much needed boost in the a.m. and also helps to improve circulation.

Keeping in mind that this particular product is antioxidant packed and suitable for daytime use, for evening I recommend an eye cream that is formulated for overnight repair. I like ROC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream.

Do you adjust your routine from day to night? You should!

I’d love to hear about your skin rituals. Leave a comment & share.

Pro makeup Artist Brandalyn Fulton (@BrandalynFulton) shares her thoughts on First Aid Beauty’s 5 in 1 Eye Cream Age Delay

I wish shopping for all beauty products were as easy as shopping for First Aid Beauty’s 5 in 1 Eye Cream Age Delay. Shopping for the right skincare can be so overwhelming. There are so many chemical terms and such an overflow of products on the market. It is hard to know what product does what while assessing your beauty problems, likes, dislikes, skin allergies, etc. First Aid Beauty has truly made finding a good eye cream super easy! Right on the package it lists the 5 areas of concern and what it is targeted to achieve.

 1. Prevent/reduce wrinkles

 2. Improve radiance

3. Correct uneven skin tone

4. Nourish and moisturize

5. Combat free radicals

I am very selective and particular about eye cream because I need help with all five. Upon using First Aid Beauty’s 5 in 1 Eye Cream, I immediately saw results. I applied the cream all around the eye area before my face moisturizer in the morning and at night after I cleansed my skin. My tired eyes felt a boost of energy and immediately I felt more hydrated. As I continued to use the cream my dark circles and facial expression lines (aka wrinkles) are less pronounced. The texture of the cream is not heavy and it wears very light on the skin. It worked great underneath my concealer.  First Aid Beauty keeps skincare simple and has a great product even for those with sensitive skin.  You can find First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Eye Cream for $28 at select Sephora retailers or at www.sephora.com.

Brandalyn’s PRO Tip: While concealer is used to mask dark circles an eye cream is essential to prevent the additional damage around the eye area. If you are having concerns with your concealer going on smoothly or with your eyes looking more and more tired, an effective eye cream is a must have! Consistent use of an eye cream will yield positive results! When applying in the morning, use just enough to not disturb your eye shadow or concealer.

Over the last year or so I have become a little bit obsessed with eye creams. While Iʼm not yet at the stage where I need serious help around the peepers (praises to all that is holy with a wish that the day never comes), every once in a while I have one of those extra long nights that inevitably leads to puffy, tired eyes requiring added TLC. It was after one such run that I started using Le Soin Regard, since then, Iʼve been singing praises.

Le Soin Regard promises immediate and long term benefits against aging, improvement in elasticity, smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, renewed radiance and reduction in dark circles and puffiness. While Le Soin Regard promised to deliver all that, all I asked was a reduction or prevention of puffiness and addition of radiance — and that was definitely delivered.

When a product does what it promises to do, I have to take a closer look at the ingredients (I do that even when they donʼt work). While all of the ingredients work in unison for maximum product efficacy, here are the ones that stood out to tackle my particular problem; caffeine and green tea extract for the puffiness, Chlorella Vulgaris, a river microalgae to firm eye contour and mica, which illuminates skin and helps to reflect light. Other noteworthy ingredients include Blue Lotus Stem Cells, which restructures, smoothes and tightens and Helychrisum flower water and Tourmaline which improves microcirculation.

Le Soin Regard is made by Absolution, a unisex, organic line from France that was made available at SpaceNK in spring of 2011. Le Soin Regard is over 99% natural, retails for $43. The 10 ml product size will easily last a month with once daily use. Try it and let me know what you think.

If you are seriously into beauty or even if you are mildly interested, you might have heard all the ravings about the wonders of Argan oil.  The Argan plant is found mainly in North Africa and specifically Morocco. Argan oil is rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, carotenes and essential fatty acids and it is the number two ingredients in Kahina Eye Cream.

The cream also includes green tea, white tea and olive leaf extracts.  It also contains extracts from yeast and sea fennel.

According to the manufacturer, Kahina Eye Cream is suitable for all but is ideal for dry, sensitive and mature skin. On a recent visit for my first facial (full deets on TTB soon) I learned that the skin around the eye is four times thinner than the rest of the skin on the face and the area should only be treated with products specifically designed for eye area application.

Kahina Eye Cream is super lightweight and it completely absorbed into my skin.  I have been using it for about four weeks and the area around my eye definitely looks more…supple.  The manufacture claims that Kahina works by:

  • Enhancing moisture retention while boosting collagen production
  • Stimulating microcirculation that helps to decrease puffiness and dark circles
  • Soothing and relaxing the muscles around the eyes to reduce the appearance of                   fine lines
  • Fighting free radicals that contribute to cellular damage and aging

Kahina is named for a Berber queen and prophetess who reigned in Morocco circa 700 CE. She is a a heroine to the Berber women. The company was started by Katharine Phillips L’Heureux, who on a trip to Morocco discovered the wonderful benefits of pure Argan oil.  All Kahina products are made using organic argan oil and 25% of the profits from product sales are used in initiatives to support Berber women.

Kahina eye Cream is 79% organic and 100% natural.  This is my first eye cream and it is the standard by which all other eye creams I use from now on will be measured.  If you are like me and you are a little timid about including an eye cream into your face care regiment, Kahina Eye Cream is great place to start.  Because it is so lightweight, you won’t feel like you’ve added a product to your eye area. It takes only a few seconds to apply the cream but the benefits will last a long time.

When using an eye cream, you should use sparingly.  If you are older than 25 years, the best time to start using an eye cream is yesterday.

Kahina Eye Cream retails for $65 and is available here. Remember, not only will Kahina Eye Cream help you look better, but also, a portion of the profits from the sale will help Berber women live better.  How can you beat that?
