I think I speak for all beauty lovers when I say ‘I love fall makeup and skincare collections’! They are always the most extensive and all the best launches are typically released in the second half of the year.  The fall season is what major beauty hauls are made of, right? Here are  4 Fall Makeup and Skincare Launches that you should get excited about.

Dior Rouge Baume

4 Fall Makeup and Skincare Launches to Get Excited About - Dior Rouge BaumeAfter getting everyone all hot and bothered with their Addict Fluid Stick launch, Dior came back with these new Rouge Baumes.  Sheer and comfortable like a balm, but with staying power of a lipstick. The color range is incredible so I am anxious to experiment with some deeper shades since they may be more wearable than a full coverage lipstick. Available at Saks for $35.00.

 Dior Star Foundation

4 Fall Makeup and Skincare Launches to Get Excited About - Dior Star Foundation

I know, I know. TWO Dior products in this post? Yup. They have been killing it with releases recently and I am so intrigued by this new Star foundation.  The shade range seems to be a bit better than previous formulations, which is a plus, and the formula is designed to help even skin tone, reduce the appearance of dark spots and brighten. What can be better than that? Not a darn thing. Available at Saks for $50.00.

 Charlotte Tilbury

4 Fall Makeup and Skincare Launches to Get Excited About - Charlotte Tilbury eye shadow quadThough this brand is not a new launch for the rest of the world, it is for the United States. Finally making her debut in store at Bergdorf Goodman and Nordstrom (the Grove) this month, the Charlotte Tilbury line has been highly anticipated by many, including myself. I have not splurged on anything yet, since I am waiting for an official counter to open so I can get the full experience. However, a few things on my radar are the eye palette in Sophisticate (all matte and all amazing), her Cheek to Chic blushers (I do have one of these and absolutely adore it), the eye shadow sticks and her soon to be released matte lipsticks.  Available at Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman now.

 Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate

4 Fall Makeup and Skincare Launches to Get Excited About - Shiseido Ultimune ConcentrateWhat is a favorite fall beauty launch list without a skincare mention? This new concentrate from Shiseido has received quite the buzz this fall, and personally I can never resist a new serum. I specifically like that it is designed for any age range and that it boosts the benefits of one’s current regimen, regardless of concern.  While not only helping to diminish wrinkles and boost radiance, the Ultimune complex helps to boost cell’s defensive functions in order to help the complexion reach its full potential. Sign me up! Available at Nordstrom for $65.00.

I’m never not pursuing beauty perfection…like the perfect complexion-mimicking foundation or my most flattering shade of red. Add to that list, my ongoing quest for the perfect no-lipstick-lipstick…you know — that perfect shade of lippie that makes your lips look lush and supple with just a hint of color. The kind of shade that perfectly flatters your natural lip tone and makes people wonder “is she or isn’t she wearing a lippie”. Well, my dears, my search ends with Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Mirage.

A. How perfect is the name of the shade, “Mirage”? Like that’s precisely the goal…to sort of look like there’s lip product there, but not really. Oh, the R&D folks at Dior are geniuses!

Dior Fluid Stick Swatch
Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Mirage

Somewhere between the land of gloss & the land lipstick lies Dior Addict Fluid Stick …it goes on glossy, but finishes with the soft, cushiony feel of a lipstick. The long wear formula lasts for hours…about 3-4 to be precise, but lips never feel or look like you’re wearing a long-wear product…the finish remains soft and supple.

The heart shaped applicator is a nice touch, as it makes applying Dior Addict Fluid Stick a breeze. I like how the tip of the applicator sort of hugs my lips. But before the product sets, I like to use my fingertip to do a little pat. By patting the product in, I achieve a more natural looking finish.

Sexy — I think almost everyone that celebrates Valentine’s Day wants it to be sexy. But sexy is defined differently for everyone. For some it’s a vampy red lip, for others it a saucy, ankle flattering stiletto. . . well, here’s my personal sexy protocol & the items that make me feel, ahem – in the mood.

Set The Mood

The latest collection from NEST — Sultry — is a smoldering collection of three mood igniting candles. The Sultry collection is deigned to rev up “the olfactory pleasures of consumers looking to set the right mood and ambiance for their late night activities, whatever they may be.”   The collection includes:

One O’ Clock: Luminous notes of wild orchid, night-blooming jasmine and frangipani flower are layered over a blend of exotic woods, black pepper and vetiver. ($34)

Two O’ Clock: Cedarwood and a soft suede accord are blended with bergamot and enhanced with a spicy mélange of cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon bark. ($34)

Three O’ Clock: Precious essence of Mysore sandalwood is entwined with subtle nuances of smoldering embers, black amber and frankincense. ($34)

To narrow down the choice of bubbles, I called up my local wine shop, Total Wine, West Orange, NJ and spoke to Lee.  I asked for four bubbly options — two champagnes, because you can’t beat the authenticity and romance of  champagne and two choices that sparkle but are easier on the pocket. Lee’s suggestions are below:

Montaudon Extra Dry – A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. It’s a very elegant and fruit forward champagne. A lot of citrus character and a wonderful texture that really coats the entire palate. Montaudon harvests their own fruit as well as sources many of the top name Champagne Houses in France. ($34.99)

De Margerie Grand Cru Brut – This is my favorite Champagne in the $30-$50 range. 90% Pinot Noir. It leaves a long, long finish of cherry flavor on the palate. It has a toasty texture that, like the Montaudon, really explodes in your mouth. It’s produced by Georges Vessellle and harvested from the Bouzy region of Champagne, one of the most celebrated regions in France. ($37.99)

Francois Montand Blanc de Blanc Brut or Extra Dry – Both are made with 100% Chardonnay and have a very nice creamy texture. They are some of the best values in the store for sparkling wines since they exhibit much of the same characteristics you’d get in an actual Champagne.  ($12.99)

Jaillance Cremant de Bourgone – This is a unique blend for a Sparkler, using three grapes of Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay. It has almost a Sauvignon Blanc quality to it with its citrus fruit and bright acidity.  The chardonnay is very apparent in the creamy texture. ($14.99)

What would Valenine’s Day with carte blanche to indulge in chocolate?  This year, it would be just another Thursday. Try Edward Marc’s  Valentine’s Day box and harness the power of cholcolate’s aphrodisiac qualities. Each heart shaped offering is filled with an assortment of the companies best selling chocolates that feature a “truly global flavor profile; including nuts from the coast of Africa and the Middle East, coconut from the tropics, and luscious creams and caramels made with milk from America’s dairy farms.” ($35)

Dress the Part

No matter what you find sexy, you will find something suitable at Adore Me. Adore Me is trendy online lingerie club that offers a unique personalized shopping experience, and affordable lingerie for women of varying shapes and sizes. ($39.99)

I love cleavage – toe cleavage, that is. Dress up your lingerie with classic pointy pump with a slight twist. This Charles by Charles David pump has a low cut top that shows a bit of toe cleavage and works for just about everyone. This shoe will elongate even the shortest legs and the four inch heel will instantly  tone and define calf muscles. If you are going bare-legged, check out this post and scroll down to Dr Dennis Grossman’s Alpha Beta Glow Pad with Vitamin D. ($98)

There is something very sexy about understated jewelry, especially if it conveys a message and the Sydney Evan Gold and Pave ring says it all. ($438)

Body Care

Get touchable soft skin with LaLicious Sugar Kiss Collection of body care products. The line include a Souffle Scrub ($34,) Body Oil ($24,) Whipped Body Soap ($18) and Body Butter ($25.) All products are formulated with all natural ingredients and use citrus, rose, and vanilla essential and fragrant oils to deliver a delicate, sweet aroma. The body oil and the whipped body soap are my favorite…both are formulated with coconut oil, a natural antioxidant. It penetrates multiple layers of the skin to provide superior moisture and protection.

The glow of love is real. But often not so visible to those who see us every day. These products are designed to work with your body’s chemistry to amplify your beauty and create a shade that is uniquely you.

Stila Self Adjusting Blush

Stila Self Adjusting Blush is a pH-based powder that reacts to skin tone and individual pH of the wearer to create a perfect personalized shade. The blush delivers velvety, luminous, flawless finish. ($20)

 Color Awakening Lipglow

Dior Addict Lip Balm contains Color Reviver technology that responds directly to the unique chemistry of each wearer’s lips before releasing its color ingredient. Lips are instantly moisturized and appear full and radiant. The lip balm contains wild mango, luffa cylindrica and SPF10 to provide continuous moisture and protection. ($32)

There you have it, my version of ‘sexy.’

Red lips. Bold. Daring. Captivating.  And so many choices that your head may spin trying to choose one.  The level of comfort when wearing a red lip varies from person to person, some feeling confident in a full coverage, matte, fire engine red shade, while others prefer a sheer wine-colored  hue that can simply give the look of subtle elegance.

To help ease some of this red lip anxiety I have rounded up a variety of shades that run the gamut from intense and bold to delicate and sheer.  For hard core makeup lovers out there, consider this an exercise in a red lip wardrobe – with something for everyone and for all occasions.

Red Lipsticks with Slight Blue Undertones

Shades such as these often look great on cooler skin tones. Note that you can have a cool skin tone even if you have darker skin.  A sure fire way to figure out if you are a cooler skin tone is if you look good in silver jewelry.  The geeky science side of me also suggests looking at your veins, and if they have a blue-ish cast, you are a cool skin tone. If you burn easily  when in the sun, you have a cool skin tone.  Simple!  Celebs that have a slightly cooler skin tone: Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon.  Consider trying the following:

Lip Tar in NSFW

Lancome Rouge Love in 181

MUFE lip liner in  8C

Red Lipsticks with Orange Undertones

With colors that have a strong orange base, women who have a warmer based skintone often wear these the best.  A warmer skintone has a golden or more yellow undertone and typically looks great in gold jewelry.  If you tan when out in the sun then you have a warm skin tone. Another way to determine is again to look at your veins and they should have a more green cast to them – beauty is a science, see?!  If you have this skin tone, you are in good company with Jennifer Lopez, Megan Fox and Beyonce.  Here are some great choices:

Estee Lauder in Red Velvet

MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger

YSL Liner #10

Tarte Lip Stain in Cherry

Burgundy Red Shades of Lipstick

These shades are often a great option for warmer skin tones to wear in an effort to lessen the intensity of a red lip.  Shades with a slightly brown undertone, can often be a great choice for easing your way into a bolder lip.  Below are some great options to achieve a beautiful burgundy pout for Fall:

MAC Liner in Mahogany

CSL Gloss in Confident

Nars Lipstick in Autumn Leaves

Berry and Wine Shades of Lipstick

For those ladies who have a cooler undertone, and want to tone it down from a serious red lip, a nice bordeaux or berry shade is a perfect way to add some color to your look without feeling over the top.  Perfect for the office or an evening out, there are so many different finishes and textures for everyone to find their perfect berry lip.  I have rounded up a few winners from this category:

MAC Liner in Quartz

Stila Lip and Cheek Stain in Cherry Crush

Dior Addict Extreme in Paparazzi

Bobbi Brown Creme Matte in Razzberry

A bolder lip is best complimented with a neutral eye and natural cheek, allowing for the color to stand out and not compete with anything else.  Since wearing more intense shades often means more maintenance, my advice is always to line the lips first around the outer edges, and then use the liner to lightly fill in the rest of the lip.  Apply your preferred red hue with a lip brush so there is more control and finish with a quick blot on a tissue to remove any excess.  I sometimes dust my lips with a bit of translucent loose powder to provide even more staying power, but only when wearing matte lipsticks.  For a step by step tutorial, read Felicia’s post here to see how the beauty glamazon herself applies a red lip.

Fall is in full swing and the holidays are fastly approaching, so the time is now to get your red lip game going!

What are some of your favorite reds you wear – share in the comments below!  And even better than sharing?  Showing!  Upload a picture to Instagram and tag it #TTBRedLip to show us how you wear yours!

I love manicures and I absolutely do not need a reason to shop for nail polish.  I think a manicure is one of the quickest beauty pick-me-ups, second only to applying a bit of lipgloss or lipstick. Since it’s officially fall jewel tones are everywhere. I have been spotting rich rubies, royal blues, emerald greens and everything in between on nails, high and low. Here are some of my favorites.

Dior – Purple Revolution 906

YSL – 17 Blue Cobalt

Illamasqua – Scarab

Deborah Lippmann – Let’s go crazy

Essie – Luxedo
Zoya – Holly
Essie – Stylenomics
Mineral Fusion – Mossy Banks (Polishes available at Wholefoods market.)
Butter London – Branwen’s Feather

This week I’m wearing Mossy Banks by Mineral Fusion.

Ladies, it’s mid-March and the perfect time to start thinking about Spring makeup trends and how we will incorporate the best of what’s NOW into our current makeup routine.  As a certified Beauty Girl, I live for the changing of seasons and updating my makeup arsenal to reflect the newest trends.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Cheri Botiz, Nordstrom National Beauty & Fragrance Director to discuss the makeup trends in store for Spring. Rick DiCecca (Estée Lauder Global Makeup Stylist), Ricky Wilson (Dior Celebrity Makeup Artist), Deborah Lippmann (Celebrity Manicurist and Founder of Deborah Lippmann), and Matin (Laura Mercier Celebrity Makeup Artist) also joined the conversation and offered four top beauty looks as the temperature heats up! How will you incorporate these looks?

1) Iridescent Eyes –

2) Bright Scents –

3) Bright Lips – (a ThisThatBeauty fave, obviously;))

4) Bold Nails –

Want to get super involved with Nordstrom’s Spring Beauty trends but feel challenged on where to start? Well Nordtrom’s complimentary Beauty Stylist service can help! That’s right, your own personal beauty assistant to help you find the best products for your complexion. Call your nearest Nordstrom at 1.800.7beauty to schedule a one-on-one!

One of the first designer brands that I fell in love with was Christian Dior.  Recently my love for Dior transitioned from fashion to makeup. As a Dior mascara devotee, I squealed at the opportunity to pitch in for Felicia at the ninth hour and cover an event celebrating the of launch of Dior.com.

The event was hosted at the hip and trendy Simyone Lounge in the Meatpacking district. As I entered the facility, Miss Dior cocktails (blended pomegranate margarita on the rocks) were on hand. I was the first guest to arrive (excited much) so I had the opportunity to speak with the makeup artist and get a quick makeover. Makeup artist Joel Marriot added a little depth and shimmer to my eyes using colors from the 5-Colours Iridescent Eyeshadow palette, Petal Shine and color to my lips using the highly pigmented and moisturizing lipstick in fuchsia, from the Rouge Dior collection.

Beauty insiders soon filled the space and we were all introduced to the brand spankin’ new retail experience that is Dior.com. The website is highly interactive, has historic information on the brand and products but the best part is that you can now buy all of your Dior beauty products with the click of a button.  My favorite thing about the site is the feature that allows you to “dress your lips in a wardrobe of addict shades.” This feature gives application tips for the various lip products as well allows you to upload a picture from your computer, highlight the main color area on your outfit and voila – a complimenting lip product appears.

Don’t feel bad that you missed the launch event, you can register to become a Dior Diva. As a Dior Diva, here’s what you get:

– Shopping rewards redeemable for Dior best sellers, makeup bag must-haves, fragrance favorites, and more

– Complimentary shipping for orders of $50 or more

– Product previews – get the best before the rest with product previews available exclusively to Divas on dior.com

– The annual Dior Diva Auction offering once in a lifetime opportunities brought to you by Dior and select partners

– Buzz-worthy updates on the world of Dior including makeup artist tips, new product launches, and special offers

Now, visit www.dior.com play around on the site, find and buy your favorite products, then come back and let me know your favorite thing about the site.

The first time (about 10+ years ago) my dermatologist told me to incorporate sunscreen into my daily skin care regiment, I looked at her like she had two heads. At that time I didn’t understand the importance of sunscreen during non-summer months…and as a beautiful brown woman of color, I definitely did not understand the need to protect my skin against the sun. I mean, hello…I have built-in SPF 15 (I thought). My dermatologist educated me on the benefits of daily sunscreen and sent me home with an MD Forte product that, when applied, made me as white as a ghost. The formula had a severe grey-ish purple tint. Meh! How was I supposed to embrace sunscreen and its anti-aging benefits when it made me look so hideous. Back then SPF formulations were terrible. I wandered aimlessly  from sunscreen to sunscreen trying to find a product that could be worn everyday without making my face look like a pastey purpley greyish mess!

Well that was then and this is now. Sunscreen has come a long way baby. Today, effective SPF products come in many innovative forms (sprays, towelettes, gels, powders, etc) and formulas. I currently faithfully wear sunscreen 365 days a year and have a wrinkle free face as proof. The lovely young woman in my local coffee shop (slash office) thought I was 23…bless her heart!

When it comes to skincare, I’ll step on my soap box in a minute. I LOVE makeup but good skin care is crucial. You all know what my daily regiment is like. However, if you listen to nothing else, listen to this. WEAR SUNSCREEN DAILY. For the record, I pretty much SPF 30 everyday. Sometimes I do the occasional SPF 15.  Clarins SPF 15 Multi Active Day Cream is a wonderful product (*UPDATE* As of 5/31/12 original product mentioned appears to have been discontinued. Found Multi-Active Day Early Wrinkle Corrective Lotion with  SPF 20) Clinique Even Better is a solid choice) but my preference is SPF 30. (Mario Badescu Oil Free SPF 30 is my current SPF 30 of choice).

Dermalogica Solar Defense SPF 30 Booster is one of my personal favs from way back. My dermatologist turned me to this product a few years ago and I often recommend it to friends and clients. Solar Defense Booster can be mixed with your foundation or moisturizer or applied directly to the face for maximum SPF 30 protection. The formula is free of artificial fragrance and color. Over time Vitamins C and E, Green Tea, and Grape soothe, smooth and help protect against free radical damage. Solar Defense Booster shields against both UVA and UVB rays.

If a physical blocker is more your speed, try….oh wait a minute. Do you know the difference between a physical blocker sunscreen and a chemical absorber sunscreen? Well lets pause for a quick lesson.

Topical sunscreens are broken down into two groups, chemical absorbers and physical blockers. Chemical absorbers work by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and can be further categorized by the type of radiation they absorb, UVA or UVB, or both UVA and UVB. Physical blockers work by reflecting or scattering the UV radiation. A few common chemical absorbers ingredients include:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octyl methoxycinnamate
  • Oxybenzone

Chemical absorbing sunscreens are often mixed with a combination of ingredients to provide broad spectrum coverage against both UVB and UVA radiation.

Certain individuals are allergic to chemical absorbers and can only wear physical blocker sunscreen. The two most common physical blockers are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Physical sunscreens contain powdered versions of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which reflect light, keeping it from penetrating skin. Physical sunscreens are not known to cause allergic reactions. While the aforementioned ingredients are ideal with respect to broad spectrum UV protection, their poor cosmetic appearance leaves much to be desired. When applied to the skin, physical blockers tend to have a whitening effect.

SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 offers broad spectrum protection without the unflattering after effect of a physical blocker. The lightweight mattifying fluid spreads evenly and dries quickly to a transparent finish on light to medium complexions. The revolutionary formula contains 5% Zinc Oxide/ 6% Titanium Dioxide and is ideal for individuals who are allergic to chemical sunscreen or individuals with extremely sensitive skin. This product is truly impressive because the words “sheer” and “physical sunscreen” have never truthfully existed in the same sentence…until now! SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 is my go-to sunscreen for morning runs!

Dr Dennis Gross Powerful Sun Protection SPF 30 Daily Sunscreen Towelettes are perfect for the gal, guy, or mommy on the go. The geniuses in R&D at Dr Dennis Gross deserve a gold star for this little innovation. I keep a few pre-moistened individually packaged towelettes in my purse and whip them out whenever I’m out in the sun for an extended period of time. While the oil-free and Vitamin C enriched formula is perfectly safe for use on the face, I mainly use Daily Sunscreen Towelettes on my arms and legs.  I regularly SPF my face in the mornings but sometimes forget about the rest of my body until I find myself standing in an hour long line at Shake Shack thinking, “oh the damage this sun is doing to my precious body”. During moments like those I rip open a towelette and go to town….wrinkly leathered skin averted!

Another convenient on-the-go sunscreen product is KORRES Sweet Orange Sprayable Sunscreen Emulsion. (*UPDATE* As of 5/31/12 It appears this product has been discontinued and I was unable to find a replacement product from the brand.  For on the go Sunscreen try Philosophy Here Comes The Sun Age-Defense SPF 30 Sunscreen for Body, it offers both UVA and UVB protection.

Packed with Vitamin C and other antioxidants, this oil-free sunscreen is ideal for individuals with photosensitive complexions. KORRES Sweet Orange Sprayable Sunscreen Emulsion provides broad spectrum UVA-UVB-IR sun protection. The sweet orange scent is a pleasant bonus!

Janson Beckett Sun Block Daytime Moisturizer SPF40 is an effective day cream and SPF all-in-one. The greaseless formula contains Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, and Soluble Collagen to plump and moisturize skin. I love that the silky formula absorbs quickly and leaves skin prepped for foundation. The finish feels like nothing yet it provides a high level of UVA/UVB protection.

VMV HYPOALLERGENICS is a brand that is new to me and one that I am very excited to share with ThisThatBeauty readers. The brand offers a broad selection of hypoallergenic products that exclude ingredients that are known irritants. VMV’s hypoallergenic products are all rated on a “VH (Validated Hypoallergenic) – Number” rating system. A product’s VH-Number directly correlates with the number of allergens the product DOES NOT contain, as referenced by the list of allergens compiled by the North American Dermatitis Group and the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA). Most VMV products have a VH-Number” ratign of 76, which means it contains none of the 76 known cosmetic and non-cosmetic allergens.

VMV’s Armada Face Cover SPF30 offers intensive protection against skin darkening and melasma. This product is quickly becoming my favorite and here’s why! What I find most impressive (and unique) about VMV’s Armada Face Cover SPF30 is that it offers both outdoor and indoor protection…so that means that it protects against UVA, UVB, and PFV. PFV is visible light protection against indoor light sources like halogens, fluorescents, computer screens, and heat from saunas or ovens.

For those of you who are concerned about hyperpigmentation and the sun’s harmful effects, Armada Face Cover can help. The product has protection so opaque that by using it daily, both indoors and outdoors can help to lighten dark spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation. Don’t let the products claim of “opaque protection” scare you. The formula applies sheer and quickly dries to a smooth soft matte finish.
