Be cool y’all. . .but I think I’ve found my perfect take on the wildly popular #Oxblood trend. I give you MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Pencil in shade 10C (matte deep berry plum). And here’s the best part — this one little pencil can be worn three ways: 1) see through, 2) medium coverage, 3) full-on vamp. See my pic below:

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip #10
one pencil, three ways: which is your favorite?

Amazing, right? I’m the queen of matte lips. . .and when I think of my favorite mattes, they’re all either lipstick bullets or those new liquid lipstick formulations. It’s rare that I reach for a pencil. But MAKE UP FOREVER has me hooked. The formula is actually quite comfortable and not drying at all. I’ve been sporting this look the last few days and frankly — I can’t keep my eyes off of myself. #HumbleMuch?

More About Aqua Lip:

MUFE Aqua Lip

The extremely waterproof texture of this pencil can be used to reshape and heighten lip contour. Very long-lasting and non-transferable, it holds for hours even in extreme conditions. It is water and saliva resistant. It can be used on the entire mouth, after applying non-oily skincare on the lips. The range of matte shades offer natural harmonies in matching tones and other more intense colors.

Nothing says party time like a great smokey eye. Check out this video on jewel toned smokey eyes, perfect for New Year’s Eve….and beyond. You’re welcome and Happy New Year!

With all the focus so often on balancing makeup, both a soft eye and strong lip or vice versa, I often crave the elegant femininity that comes from combining both at the same time.  It can create quite a bold look and can be a powerful combination, one not for the faint of heart.

MAC’s newest collection, Strength, reflects this exact state of mind and style.  It centers around dramatic eyes and lips pumped up with vivid color, and is subtley complimented by delicate natural tones for the cheeks and high gloss nail lacquer.

Central to the collection are the two eye shadow quads, aptly named; All Woman and Inner Strength. Both are complete with a range of light, medium and dark shades. Finishing off the eye look from this collection is the Opulash Mascara and 3 different types of liners, a Kohl liner, Technakohl Liner and Penultimate eye liner. Neutral blush shades, Poised and Taupe Shape follow, then  five bold lip colors with two lip pencils. Stength is a collection that commands attention and makes for powerful, strong looks – perfect for today’s woman.

Strength is available now at all MAC counters and online at maccosmetics.com, and ranges in price from $15 – $47.50.

There is never a better time of the year to bring out the sparkle than New Year’s Eve.  In your clothes, your shoes, your handbags and of course your makeup!  While shimmer and sparkle are quite acceptable on any part of the face, the most versatile and (in my opinion) fun place to experiment with this medium and texture is on your eyes.  So it is aptly timed that MAC is launching its newest range of eye shadows called Pressed Pigments.  Already a cult status product, their loose pigment is a favorite of anyone looking for intense color payoff with equal reflection and frost, and with these new shadows, the concept is very much the same.  Able to be worn wet or dry for either a high gloss dramatic coverage or shimmering translucent finish, these pigments are the perfect accent to a glamorous look, perfect for ringing the New Year.  Here is a look at the entire range:

With shades that run the spectrum from pale and pearlized to dark and smoldery, my favorite stand out shades are Enlightening, a deep silver which is perfect for complimenting a smoky eye, Light Touch a high pearl powder that would be an excellent highlight shade in the inner corner of the eye as well as brow bone, and finally Sweet Acting a mid-tone pink that is a color suitable for many different skin types.

Pressed Pigments collection is now available in store and online at maccosmetics.com, and retail for $21.00

No makeup look is complete without a finished brow. However, finding the perfect color or product that will enhance and define your brow can often be quite the challenge. Pencil or powder, gel or wax?… – the options are endless.  And now with MAC’s newest launch, Stylish Brow, these options are offered all in one collection: There are duos of complimentary powder colors that blend to match and highlight a range of different hair shades, and Fluidline Brow Gelcremes that tint the hair and hold it in place with a more wax-like texture.  As a third option,  Veluxe Brow Pencil Liners give a matte and velvety smooth finish, and come in a range of shades that can be used to fill in any sparse gaps in hair and then combed out with the attached brow comb.

All products are available in stores December 26th and online at maccosmetics.com on December 24th and retail for $16-$27.50.

I’ve always been one to share. My toys (as a tyke), my food, my time, and yes…my beauty secrets! While I absolutely love writing product reviews and demystifying the in’s and out’s of the newest beauty, what I enjoy most is the opportunity to chat personally with my readers and dish the kind of beauty wisdom that can be applied across the board, regardless of the specific products your choose to use. So when Wella Professionals asked if I’d share my best kept secrets for pitch-perfect hair, enviable skin, and makeup-musts — well, I jumped at the opportunity. Why? Because beauty is my passion and sharing every ounce of that passion is the very reason I started ThisThatBeauty over five years ago.

So from me to you: My Best Kept Beauty Secrets for Hair, Skin, and Makeup

Skin:
For bright, clear, even-toned skin, I cannot stress enough the importance of sunscreen 365 days a year. The sun’s harmful rays are the number one cause of pre-mature aging. In simpler language — it’s making you look old! In more eloquent language — it’s causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear as early as your 20’s. Yikes! Around age 60, I’ll happily accept my character-defining smile lines as a little token of a life well lived….but at 30-something, I’ll pass (thank you!). Maintain line-free skin by wearing daily broad spectrum (UVA &UVB) sunscreen. Many of today’s formulations are lightweight and are undetectable under makeup. There are even powdered SPF products that can be applied over makeup. Nice, huh?
Hair: Let’s focus on heat protection. I’m always amazed at the amount of thought and label-reading that goes into selecting the appropriate shampoo and conditioner for a specific hair type…only to have the affects of your nourishing shampoo and deep-conditioning treatment reversed by heat damage during the styling process. Ladies, let’s get it together! If you are applying any type of heat to hair (blow dryer, curling iron, straightening iron) a heat protectant is imperative to shield hair against damage. Failure to comply can result in frayed ends, breakage, and irreversible damage to curls if you’re naturally curly (like me).  Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray can help. The formula lynch-pin, Polyquaternium-16, not only protects hair from heat, but also helps to reduce static electricity, and provide touchable hold. Ask your stylist for Wella or find a Wella salon near you at wellausa.com
Makeup: If I’ve learned anything at all from RuPaul’s Drag Race, I’ve learned that “contour” is a gift from above. But let’s use this technique of shading and highlighting for good, and not over-contoured evil. I love creating soft contour with blush and bronzer….this gives my face a sculpted, more lifted look. Also, if I’m feeling a little plump in the cheeks, in addition to amping up my workout, I go a bit more generous on the bronzer…you’d be surprised what a little well placed contouring can do!
Acne: Ever think about some of the “non beauty product” things you can do to manage your acne? 1) Change pillow cases often. 2) Use a headset with cell phone. 3) Use paper towels after washing face (instead of using the towel that was used to dry your body).
Overall Skincare Maintenance: Remember to evaluate your skin and products often. Maybe the super lightweight moisturizer that was a God send for summer, falls short for winter. Skin changes from season to season and so should your skin care products.

So there you have. . . a few of my best tips for staying beautiful! Xx

I may love makeup more than life itself, but the truth is it takes work and multiple products to get my morning flawless finish (some mornings just flaw no less).  This keeps me on the constant hunt for products that last longer, group all the necessities together and generally make life a little easier. So naturally I was over the moon when I was able to try Pixi’s Fake Awake Kit and Lip Blush — 2 products that are perfect for all my daily makeup requirements.

The Fake Awake Kit is probably the most apropos name for this product – as it contains the essential products needed to wake your face up – or at least look like it.  The kit contains:  2 concealers, 1 cream highlighter, 1 brightening cream, 1 peachy cheek & eye awakening powder, 1 nude setting powder, 1 glowy pale pink lip gloss and 1 strawberry red lip & cheek stain – all necessities are covered! And since it comes in a drawer-like packaging, where you can slide the kit in and out of the box – it makes it portable and perfect for travel, school and touch-ups on the go.

To find another lip product to add to my already ridiculous stash seemed almost pointless until I tried the Pixi Lip Blush in Luck – a stain that delivers incredibly long wear without the dreaded lip “dry out” that comes with similar products.  I found that this looked great alone or layered with the pale pink gloss in the Awake Kit.  And as the weeks progressed, I found myself putting this lip stain under almost all my lip products at one point because I loved the color that it gave my lips and after the other lip products had worn off, the stain was still there, always.  All beauty products should be so reliable.

The Fake Awake Kit retails for $28.00 and the Lip Blush for $18.00.  Both can be found on the Pixi Beauty website.

For a little less than 48-hours, I was able to take a much needed break from the effects of Hurricane Sandy and experience Canada’s top beauty brand, Lise Watier.

Lise Watier Winter 2012 Glamour Rose Collection

I was invited to Montreal to learn about Lise Watier and celebrate the launch of their e-commerce site in the US. My trip included a fun crash course of Lise Watier Beauty School, a rocking star-studded launch party, a limo-guided tour of Montreal, breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton with the Lise Watier, a glam makeover and a photo shoot with one of Montreal’s top photographers.

The world is becoming overrun with beauty subscriptions.  They are everywhere –  sending you tons of makeup, skincare and hair samples monthly, in hopes that you may fall in love with at least one if not all of the items and become a loyal purchaser.  Though the playing field is well saturated, there is still one subscription service that seems to be edging out slightly from the rest, if you ask me, and it’s Glossybox.  Beauty lovers are quickly falling in love with this monthly subscription that features some of the best niche and luxury brands from all over the world, including Ole Henriksen, Illamasqua, Burberry, Wella and Koh Gen Do.

To begin the process, all members must fill out a beauty profile that helps Glossybox customize each month’s box to your specific likes/dislikes and concerns.  Once they have your preferences, all that is left to do is sit and wait for your delivery of all the sample, travel and occasionally full size goodies your beauty loving heart could desire.  Recently I had the chance to try out a few of the glossyboxes and instantly fell in love with their selection of products.  Here are a few of my standout favorite items from some recent Glossyboxes:

  1. Ole Henriksen Truth Serum – As one that was already a fan of this line, I was delighted to see this cult classic serum included. Packed with 5 kinds of Vitamin C and collagen, this is a vitamin cocktail for your face.  Delish.
  2. Ofra Cosmetics Universal Eyebrow pencil – New to this brand, I never can turn down a brow product.  And the fact that it works for any skin tone was a bonus.  It matched perfectly to  my hair color and lasted from morning till night.  Happy brows = Happy me.
  3. Wella Enrich Moisturizing Treatment – My hair often has bouts of schizophrenia, where it wants to be oily one day and dry the next.  So when I come across treatment product that is designed for all hair types, I am intrigued.  And the intrigue turned to joy when my hair was left bouncy and sans frizz.
  4. Kryolan Made for Glossybox Lipstick in Glossybox Pink – I need another lipstick like I need a hole in my head, but surprisingly I adored this color.  A perfect nude pink lip wearable with just about any makeup combination I put with it.
  5. Biolage Hair Oil – Normally just a wash and rinse kinda gal, I was excited to give my hair a little more TLC – and this oil was just the answer.  Results were super soft and shiny!
  6. Missha BB Cream – As one of the original inventors of BB creams, this was a great addition to my already growing collection.  The coverage was super light and gave my skin a flawless finish without any other foundation.

To join in on the fun, visit glossybox.com to choose from a 1 month, 3 month, 6 month or 12 month subscription.

Do you know that Poland is the 6th largest cosmetics producer in Europe? Well, if your answer is “no”, this begins to explain the rationale behind my recent trip to Warsaw for Polska Cosmetics’ International Cosmetics Industry Promotion Programme and Conference.

In an effort to increase awareness of Polish beauty and promote international opportunities, I was invited to take part in the  discussion panel: The Polish Cosmetics Industry From The Global Perspective. Along with Moderator Andrew McDougall (Reporter: Cosmetic Design, France), Auani Cusma de Paula (Cosmetica News: Brazylia, Rachel Liverman (Brand Relationship Manager: Birchbox, USA), and Emanuela Treneva (United Business Media: HBA Global, USA), I was invited share my thoughts on opportunities for the expansion of Polish cosmetics internationally. During the panel we explored the strengths, perceived weaknesses, and shared insight on opportunities for growth.

That’s me. . .in the top knot & DVF dress!
Imagine I’m saying something brilliant. . .you’re likely right ;)

The highlight of my contributions included:

Perception of Polish Beauty — Highly focused on aesthetics and skin care…this seems to be the core of Eastern European beauty. I currently know of only one “color” focused Polish beauty brand, INGLOT. Given the success of INGLOT as a color brand, I think this lays the groundwork for other Polish brands, interested in an international audience, to make strides beyond purely skin care.

Expansion Opportunities: I always say that “beauty is very personal“. It’s the kind of thing that connects with you on a personal level. Once that connection is made, you’ll pretty much try anything. For many women, that “connection” is about a feeling, a story, a setting. This presents a major opportunity for Polish beauty from a “heritage” point of view. I think that by sharing more heritage behind the brands, you create a bond with the customer. For example, Helena Rubinstein, the very first manufacturer to offer UV protection cream, was born and opened her first cosmetics company in Cracow, Poland? Also, Max Factor — yes, THE Max Factor of PAN-CAKE makeup fame — was born in Łódź in Poland as Maksymilian Faktorowicz. He created the first ever daily foundation. Clearly, the world should know more about this kind of Polish beauty! [What’s your story Poland?…Why should we love you? Pull us in!]

While in Poland I attended the Beauty Forum & Spa Expo (find video footage here on Viddy). As I walked the aisles I was in complete awe of the amazing niche beauty brands: like Organique, a paraben free skincare line that incorporates a holistic approach to caring for skin. Clarena, a line of caviar infused creams and serums. Synesis, a wonderfully chic fragrance brand…I had the pleasure of spending time with CEO Anna Garbaczewska, CEO — what an incredible woman!

With Anna – CEO of Synesis

Since all work and no play makes Felicia a very dull girl. . . I was delighted when Anna offered to show us (Lara of PrettyConnected.com, Rachel from Birchbox, Alice of Candifiend on Youtube, Heather of BeautyUnbiased.com, Danielle of Style And Beauty Doctor) around Warsaw. We had a ball. . . a few pictures —

Team Poland: Dinner with Danielle, Rachel, and Lara
Me: Taking in the Streets of Warsaw
When in Warsaw…Vodka with your hosts (I actually chickened out)
Always stop to smell the roses, err…scents: A yummy collection in Warsaw

While in Warsaw, I shot LOTS of Viddy footage of my beauty finds. For more, visit my Viddy account. You’ll find videos from the Beauty Forum & Spa Expo, product demos, and even my wild partying in Warsaw — Spoiler alert: I guest DJ’d one night!

Click my Viddy account to see my beauty videos from Warsaw — SIX in total !!!

I am incredibly grateful to Polska Cosmetics and the entire Poland Beauty Industry for inviting me to take part in such and important inaugural event for their beauty community. It was my honor to represent the US. The Promotion Programme (which is partly responsible for my participation), will run for about three more years. The unique initiative is deigned to promote the Polish beauty industry and enable the Polish national pavilion to take part in important beauty trade shows throughout the world — clearly an important step in boosting Polish beauty awareness. I encourage you to learn more about the Polish cosmetics industry and The Promotion Programme: www.polishcosmetics.pl
