Illuminate Thy Skin! ThisThatBeauty Contributor Christene Carr Shares Her Fave Illuminating Products For Winter

This is only my second full winter living in a state where I have to swap my open toe sandals for fur lined knee high boots, so I’ll be the first to tell you — I was in no way prepared to deal with the dull skin that I am currently faced with (pun intended.) With this in mind I went on a quest to find products that would give me a fabulous summer glow, albeit temporary, in the dead of winter.

Before applying makeup to my face I moisturize and add an SPF.   Yes, it’s winter but the sun is still out so an SPF is necessary. I still have a few post-pimple blemishes on my face, so next, I spot conceal using my foundation.

Now, on to the glow…

Smashbox Photo Op is an under eye brightener that contains Vitamin C, peptides, red wine extract and marine collagen. If you have minor dark circles this product works great to conceal them, if your dark circles are more serious, Smashbox Photo Op prepares your under eye area for concealer application. It has tiny light reflectors that help eyes look more alive.

GloMinerals Glotint for cheeks and lips

I LOVE this product!   I have tried stains and I have to work fast and precise to get the look I want.   With GloMinerals Glo tint I can work slower and add product if I want more intense color.   I use it only on my cheeks to give me that bit of color before I illuminate. It is lightweight and blends nicely into my skin giving a natural blush effect.

GloMinerals Golden Bronzing Stick

This bronzing stick goes on very smooth and the illuminating particles are tiny and blend right into my skin.   I apply GloMinerals GloGolden Bronzing Stick almost under the apple of my cheek and down the center of my nose. This stick is good for a natural, day time, dewy, sun kissed glow.

Eyewand

I recently reviewed the Lipwand, so I was excited to receive the Wanderlove Eyewand. It is a three part product with a cream shadow, illuminator and liner. The liner is highly pigmented and glides on effortlessly but will run if worn for an extended period without a primer. The illuminator is pure perfection when applied just under the brow and blended. The cream shadow only worked for me after I applied a primer to my lid. I have oily lids, so without the primer it creased fairly quickly.

Hourglass Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss

I’m a lip product minimalist and winter doesn’t change that. I’m vigilant with moisturizing my lips and every other lip product gets layered over it.   The Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss by Hourglass is enriched with Vitamin E and hydrates as it adds sheen without being too heavy or tacky. The one downside to the uber chic packaging is that while it is very beautiful, it’s slightly challenging to open. The formula is (almost) water resistant and holds up well in cold weather.

Half of the fun of makeup, for me, is just playing around and discovering new ways to use products I already own. For night time I add foundation and add a bit more color to my eyes. I also use the illuminator from the Eyewand on the outside corner below my eye.   I even out the color on my lip with a brown lip pencil and apply the Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss over it.

Whatever happens this winter, I suggest you find your way to glow, I did.
