Get the Look: Janelle Monae at Grammy Nominations

Makeup artist,  Ashunta, shares her step-by-step process and products used to create Janelle Monae’s look for the 2012 Grammy Nominations.

GET THE LOOK!

Janelle Monae wanted to venture off from her traditional signature red lipstick. Instead we went for a vibrant hot pink (COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lipcolor in Spellbound) that would work really well to create beautiful color blocking as she performed in her all black-and-white ensemble with the group Fun. at the Grammy nominations concert in Nashville.

We went for glowing skin using COVERGIRL+ Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer. This helps to tone down redness and even skin texture.

Then, I applied COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Liquid Makeup in Classic bronze, which is the perfect color for Janelle’s beautiful skin. I used it just to even out her skin color and even out any skin imperfections. For highlighting, I used  COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer in light bronze and for sculpting, I used Brown Bronze. For her sculpted cheekbones, I used COVERGIRL+ Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry.

For Janelle’s eyes, I used  COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers 3-Kit Shadows in Golden Sunset – I used the lighter shade on the lid and then the deeper shade in the crease and then just blended together. I did this so that it didn’t give any distinct color but just gave a soft wash to the lid.   Then I applied COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast Eye Liner in Black Fire to line the lower lash line water mark area as well as the upper lash line watermark area.  This allowed Janelle’s eyes to really pop so they stood out on stage for her performance. I finished the eye look with the new COVERGIRL Clump Crusher by LashBlast Mascara in Black to give lashes the beautiful fluttery fullness.

I used COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lipcolor in Spellbound to complete the look, I just applied directly from the tube to Janelle’s lips without lipliner. I applied once, then blotted with a tissue, then reapplied for second time, then I actually set it within translucent powder and reapplied for third time. This threefold way helps to seal lipstick – it’s perfect for performances.
