Fridays with Felicia: Volume 15

Fridays with Felicia: An intimate look behind the curtain as I share my favorite style/ beauty discoveries and ThisThatBeauty shenanigans from previous week.

Hello beauties! Let me start off by apologizing for taking last Friday off. But what had happened was…. 🙂

At approximately 9:00AM last Friday I came to the shocking realization that I had to be on a plane at 10:30am…a plane that I ‘thought’ I had to be on the next day. As you might imagine, my priorities immediately shifted from recollecting my week on TTB ====>to throwing a random assortment of tees and black skinny pants into my  hot pink Samsonite.

But your girl is BACK! Heeeeeeey! Do we like my “Bionic Lip”==>

(Full details, soon…I promise)

One of my favorite skin care brands, Mario Badescu, recently interviewed me for their blog. I answered five questions regarding my skin care routine. Want to know my skincare secrets? Click here or read below:

Felicia Walker Benson, Editor in Chief of  ThisThatBeauty.com is one of our favorite multitasking beauty mavens.   Her passion for all things beauty and fashion related has parlayed itself into a career as a makeup artist, beauty, fashion and social networking expert. . . whew!   Since she does it all with a glowing complexion we thought we’d ask her to share her skin care pearls of wisdom.

1. How would you describe your skin type?

My skin is ever-changing. At times it is acneic, oily, dry, and sensitive  to trauma (like pimples).I have to constantly monitor my skin’s current condition and care for it accordingly. While my skin care principles are constant (cleanse, tone, eye cream, treat, protect, peels/masks) my specific products rotate regularly.

2. What is the best skin care advice anyone ever gave you?

“Take care of your skin”. I learned this from an early age because I was forced to deal with acne at around age 21. From that point I realized that I had to really invest the time into caring for my skin. So far so good!

3. In your opinion, what is the single most important thing you can do for your skin?

The single most important thing you can do to care for your skin is to begin a regiment early…like in your teens. Start the process of caring for your skin. Even if it’s as simple as cleansing and applying sunscreen during the day and moisturizer at night. Good skin care habits should start early.

4. What is your personal skin care routine like?

The exact products rotate often but the routine is constant: cleanse (non foaming cleanser), tone (non alcohol based toner), treat acne, treat skin with a serum, eye cream, SPF. In the evening I do the same routine but alternate sunscreen with a night time moisturizer. I also use exfoliating peels and masks 2-3 days a week. I try to do seasonal professional silk peels with my dermatologist. And oh, I always use a makeup remover before cleansing my skin.

5. What is your favorite skin care memory?

I don’t know that I have a favorite skin care memory but I love that people regularly tell me that I have “great skin” and ask me for skin care advice. I love talking skin!

The September issue of Vogue never disappoints. On newsstands nationwide Aug 24, Mario Testino photographs Halle Berry for the cover and a breathtaking fall spread. Writer Jonathan Van Meter interviews Ms. Berry about being a mom to adorable little two-year-old daughter Nahla and her breakup with Nahla’s father, Gabriel Aubry.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ARTICLE
On her first interview in three years: “I was burned-out with having other people tell the story about me that they wanted to tell. I told my publicist, ‘I’m not going to talk anymore. I’m just going to live my life and be who I am.’”

On being asked to be on the cover of the September issue of Vogue: “What that means for a woman of color and what that means in the fashion world, what that means to pop culture, there was no way I could say, ‘No I’m not going to be on the biggest issue of the year.’”

On the “Oscar curse”: “Everybody talks about the Oscar curse,” she says. “People win Oscars, and then it seems like they fall off the planet. And that’s partly because a huge expectation walks in the room and sits right down on top of your head. The moment I won the Oscar, I felt the teardown the very next day. I thought, If I’m going down, I’m going down taking chances and daring to risk. Hence…Catwoman.”

On her appreciation of the female body: “I love the naked female form…. I just feel like that’s the most empowered position you can be in.”

“That comes with age,” she says. “I’ve been slowly getting there. If the world wouldn’t persecute me, I’d take nude pictures every day of the week.”

On her relationship and breakup with Gabriel Aubry:
“It’s just that you realize you are not meant to go the distance with everybody,” she says. “We were meant to bring this amazing little person into the world. And I think that’s why we came together. And because of that, we are going to be together forever, all three of us. We are a family until we are not here anymore.”

“We have always been friends, we’re still friends, we love each other very much, and we both share the love of our lives. And we are both 100 percent committed to being the best parents we can be. And while it was not a love connection for us, he was absolutely the right person to have this child with because she is going to have an amazing father. And that was really important to me. We’ll make sure we always do what is right for her and put her first. And she will see as she grows that we have a lot of love for each other.”
