On June 7th I visited Dr. Susan Resnick (30 East 60th Street, Suite 201, NY, NY) to get an eye exam and get fitted for new ACUVUE ® contact lenses. While I love wearing glasses, I often switch to contacts to take a break from my sexy librarian situation.
I take eye health quite seriously, and had all sorts of questions for Dr.Resnick. . . regarding eye allergies, UV protection for eyes, different type of contact lenses, etc. I even took readers questions with me. . . . and got answers!
asked: I wear both contacts and glasses but sometimes after about 6 hours or so I tend to get mild headaches….mostly when I wear my glasses. Is there anything I can do to help with that? Please ask the doc. I’ve asked mine before but he just usually changes my brand out. Thanks!
Hi Dhalia, here’s what Dr Susan Resnick had to say: This is a tough one to answer without seeing the glasses and the patient. The issue might have to do with lenses, fit…lots of technical aspects. If you’re not getting any resolution with your doctor, it might be time to make a switch.
asked: I love wearing my glasses too, and recently bought ACUVUE ® contact lenses for those moments where contacts might be a better look. My question is about safely putting on eyeliner and mascara while wearing contact lenses – What’s off-limits? I think I read somewhere that lining the inner rim of your eyes is a no-no when you’re wearing contacts.
Hi Kim, here’s what Dr Susan Resnick had to say: It’s okay to apply liner at the lower lash line, where the lashes are. But try to avoid lining the water line. It’s okay once in a blue moon for a special occasion, but not for every day wear. Later in life, at 40’s and 50’s you become more prone to eye infections and complications. It can also cause contact lenses to dry out. . . as well as increased debris deposits on lenses. Mascara on the lower lash line is completely fine. If you’re a heavy daily make up wearer, consider daily disposable lenses to reduce the risk of infection.
I love that Dr Resnick was very thorough and extremely easy to talk to. She didn’t make me feel horrible about my bad contact lens practices, instead – she recommended the type of ACUVUE ® lenses that best suit my needs and lifestyle. I went into the appointment with short list of questions. Dr Resnick was great about answering each question in plain simple language. I never felt intimidated. . . a rarity for the doctor’s office.
I even made a follow up appointment for one year, so that I can begin more closely monitoring my eye health. I generally bounce from eye doctor to eye doctor (honestly, I go to the vision center that has the best deal), but Dr Rescnick explained that it’s good to have one steady doc so that changes in your eyes can be monitored from visit to visit. A doc with no history of your eye health will not know if that speck on your eye ball is something you’ve had for years and is nothing to worry about. . . or something that’s newly developed and needs to be looked into.
Well, sold! See you in one year, Dr Resnick.
